We are not patriots, but we are not rebels either. We have seen the Christian response towards patriotism, which is mostly negative. There is something that we are supposed to do for our country. As a matter of fact, it is for any country.

## Pray for those in authority

>

***1 Timothy 2:1-3** “I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;”*

Despite messed-up politicians, we should still pray for them. The reason for prayers is not because we condone their corruption or wrong things that they have done, but it is so that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty!

I would like to still keep street-preaching, knock on doors, and tell people how to get saved! We should thank God that we still have freedom to do all this. The agents out there still do not think we are rebels. Some people out there are surprised that our ministry is still going on and we have not been arrested. This is because when we show our innocence, that we are harmless, these agents will have the tendency to leave us be, so far.

We have got to pray, for God’s sake, not for Hillary, Obama or Trump’s sake. We have to intercede, so that we can continually have the peace to serve God. The whole world will fall apostate, but that does not mean that they can take away our peace to keep giving the gospel to other people, so let’s continually pray about that!

Let’s look at another scripture. Many claim that the government system of Romans 13 is different from the government system of today. They will argue that we are bound by the Constitution, not by a tyrannical dictator.

Let’s be honest, can one really argue that American is fully going by the Constitution? Is everything fair in our government today? Not at all.

Legally, we are still under the Constitution, but in many complicated legal matters, the laws can still be interpreted and used in whatever manner the judge thinks. Kent Hovind thought he got it memorised and could get away with his issue. It did not work!

>

***Romans 13:1** “Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.”*

Obama and Trump were ordained by God. Including Nero, the man who burnt Christians.

>

***Romans 13:2** “Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.”*

Resisting government authority leads to condemnation. It does not mean a loss of salvation, but to be punished and judged. Kent Hovind paid a heavy price, didn’t he?

>

***Romans 13:3-5** “For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.”*

Just as Gene Kim is a minister of God, so are Trump and Obama.

If one gets punished by the government, and that violated the Bible, the Holy Spirit should trouble your conscience. Does that mean that we have to obey everything that the government say? Absolutely not!

>

***Romans 13:6-7** “For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God’s ministers, attending continually upon this very thing. Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.” *

Yes, we still have to pay taxes! Yes a lot of taxation is crooked, but getting to a government position is not easy. Being in the office is a lot of work, and in this part, we should give honour and credit where it is due.

## Does this mean that we should obey everything that Mr President says?

Of course not. Why were Christians persecuted by the king? Because they disobeyed the king.

We ought to obey God, rather than man. We obey our leaders when it does not violate God. If there is something in the Bible that clearly violates it, then we disobey the leader, but if it does not, then we are supposed to obey them, no matter how much they add to taxation, no matter how the rules are and we do not like it.

If a pastor tests the limits and gets tased at the border, he deserved it. This has nothing to do with the Bible about checkpoints. We have to obey God if it is clear in the Bible. Even if this means having to go through a long process. We do not like the long voting process and its rules, but it is not something that violates the Bible clearly, hence we have to do it.

## Why do we have to follow authority?

One thing about human nature is that they do not like authority. They would always ask for a clear verse as to why one would have to follow the authority. Whatever authority God has given to you, such as the parents are the authority to the children; the husband the authority to the wife; the pastor the authority to the church; the masters the authority to the slaves; the government leaders the authority to the regular people. Mankind’s problem is that they do not like to submit, and they will use a spiritual excuse to justify their rebellion. Man do not want to obey it because they want to do what they want to do, and that is a sign of a rebellious and fleshy nature.

The problem with people is a rebellious nature. It does not matter what the command is, or how dumb the command is and one does not like it, what God wants is will you obey no matter what? And He will give you a flawed person just to test your obedience. God knows that if one cannot even obey man, one will have problems obeying God. What God will demand in your life is a lot of things to take you to the next level and stage of obedience. Do you love yourself more, or God more?

God will deliberately send people to test your obedience. What did God tell Abraham? Sacrifice your son. Don’t you think that Abraham had every spiritual excuse in the world? He just shut his mouth and obeyed God.

>

***Matthew 17:24-27** “And when they were come to Capernaum, they that received tribute money came to Peter, and said, Doth not your master pay tribute? He saith, Yes. And when he was come into the house, Jesus prevented him, saying, What thinkest thou, Simon? of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? of their own children, or of strangers? Peter saith unto him, Of strangers. Jesus saith unto him, Then are the children free. Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee.”*

Jesus was criticizing the rules of the government too. He who is God Almighty humbled Himself to become a man to submit to some pagan, wicked emperor. Jesus did not agree to the rules of the government, but He submitted! Are you saying that you are better than Jesus Christ?

### If there is a grey area (an action against Christian beliefs but no clear verse that it is a sin), use wisdom

If you come to a certain grey area where one believes it is not the right thing to do against Christian beliefs, but there is no clear verse either that says it is a sin, what is one supposed to do? Before resisting the government power, one has to do this first. I know many Christians do not do this because they just want to do what they want to do.

>

***Daniel 1:5, 8-14** “And the king appointed them a daily provision of the king’s meat, and of the wine which he drank: so nourishing them three years, that at the end thereof they might stand before the king.” “But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself. Now God had brought Daniel into favour and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs. And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who hath appointed your meat and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse liking than the children which are of your sort? then shall ye make me endanger my head to the king. Then said Daniel to Melzar, whom the prince of the eunuchs had set over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink. Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of the children that eat of the portion of the king’s meat: and as thou seest, deal with thy servants. So he consented to them in this matter, and proved them ten days.” *

Daniel was in favour with the government leaders. He must have done a lot of compromising and good testimony while not violating Biblical principles to do get this favour. Christians lack wisdom!

Before street-preaching, we talk to the police officers about Romans 13 to obey the higher power, and 1 Timothy 2 where we pray for those in authority. The officers see that we are not trouble-makers and let us preach whatever we want. We need wisdom in dealing with people in authority.

Daniel says in verse 12 that he made a compromise with the prince of the eunuchs. Just try us out for ten days and see what happens! If Daniel had not made this compromise with them, Daniel would have probably have been imprisoned and executed, and we would not have the book of Daniel today, the greatest prophecy next to the book of Revelation. Daniel was second in command in the kingdom of Persia, he was certainly not dumb, and had to use much wisdom!

Dr Ruckman was doing street preaching and almost got arrested. The officers were harassing him and other students. He made a compromise that they would not street preach during the winter season, and only do it in the summer season. This gave them the freedom to street preach! Every corner of Pensacola was filled with them! They had to wear these orange vests, and did not grumble that they looked like clowns, but wearing it gave them the freedom to do street preaching and continue his ministry.

I hope that you understand the importance of how we are supposed to treat our country and honor them, and use a lot of wisdom to compromise in something where it does not violate your Christian faith. If one fails to do that, one risks getting arrested, fruits amounting to nothing, and ministry shut down. Do not blame God either and waste the opportunity He has given!
