As Bible-believing Christians, we believe that salvation is by faith alone and absolutely not by works. Different cults and religions, in fact the whole world, believe in works to eventually get to heaven. Saved Christians deny this. Salvation is only by faith and not by works. The Catholic church, Protestant denominations, lordship salvation, John Macarthur combine faith and works.

Paul’s books are filled with verses condemning works for salvation. But Catholic apologists will argue that Paul is not doing so, because of Colossians 1:21.

>

***Colossians 1:21-23**“And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled, In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight: If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;”*

This is talking about the cross of Christ. The death of Christ made one holy, but it is based on works, not faith. Verses 22 and 23 seems to show that faith and works go together, and are continuing. If one gets out of faith, one loses salvation. We fully deny this.

We believe “Once saved, always saved”, we deny losing salvation (in the church age). Some KJV-only, independent fundamental people claim to believe in eternal security, but also preach that one can lose salvation if one stops believing in Jesus Christ for salvation. These are heretics. Churches preaching repentance and lordship salvation are also heretics and should be avoided.

But doesn’t Colossians 1:21-23 prove salvation can be lost?

When Christ died on the cross for us, did it only give us salvation, or did it give us so much more? **His cross not only gave us salvation, but justification, redemption, remission, imputation, blessings and sanctification.** When one gets saved in Jesus Christ, can one not do good works and be finished? No! When Jesus died on the cross for us, and believing in that, we became saved Christians, thus this starts the opportunity to finally do good works for Him. When Jesus died on the cross, it gave us sanctification.

## Sanctification is a process

Sanctification means separation from sin to holiness, and this is a process of works. Do we get saved by sanctification, or were we given sanctification when we believed on the cross. Until one gets saved by faith first, until one accepts the cross first, nothing to do with continuing works, then only it gives one the chance to go through sanctification.

It is a great privilege to work for the King of kings now, thanks to the death of Christ. Notice that His death on the cross gave us an opportunity to work in the faith to be sanctified (Colossians 1:22).

One would be a heretic, if one denied this doctrine that after Jesus Christ died on the cross, He gives you a chance to work for Him, and be able to live through a life of sanctification. Some people accuse us that we teach Christians can sin and do whatever they want after getting saved. No! We never taught that. We believe that no matter what sin one commits, whatever one wants to do in life, only faith in the Lord Jesus Christ will save you *no matter what*!

## Sanctification is separate from salvation

Sanctification is a separate issue. Stop mingling salvation and sanctification together! Do you believe that the cross of Christ give only salvation, or so much more?

>

***1 Thessalonians 5:23** “And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”*

This verse is not talking about salvation from hell. This is talking about sanctification, and the coming of Jesus. Why? Because when Jesus comes for His children, He puts them through the Judgment Seat of Christ. This is *not* the Great White Throne Judgment, where unsaved people are damned. The Judgment Seat of Christ is for saved Christians.

When Jesus Christ died for you on the cross, it was not only salvation. It was also sanctification. He died because He expects for you to work for Him too, not just be saved from hell.

>

***Ephesians 5:25** “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.”*

There is no doubt that sanctification is a separate topic to do with the coming of Jesus. It has nothing to do with salvation from hell. This matches with 1 Thessalonians 5:23 and Colossians 1:22. These verses show the context of sanctification undoubtedly, nothing to do with salvation here.

## Judgment seat of Christ shows us that Christians are judged for their works done in the body, not soul

At the Judgment Seat of Christ, it has nothing to do with judging one’s soul. Sanctification is the body, soul and spirit being preserved blameless. Salvation only has to do with the soul, nothing to do with the body. Our body is still very capable of sinning today! No one believes that the body will get saved. The soul is the only thing that gets saved. With the body, it requires effort and work, the cleaning of oneself. At the Judgment Seat of Christ, it truly is judgement of the body, not soul.

>

***2 Corinthians 5:8-10** “We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.”*

When we are presented before God, the works of the body are judged.

But does whatever one sins in the body, doesn’t it contaminate the soul? No, it does not! For saved Christians, no matter what one’s body does, it is separated from the soul. No matter what sin is done in the body, it does not affect the soul.

## Spiritual circumcision has to cut off the soul from the body of the sins of the flesh

>

***Colossians 2:11** “In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:”*

One is cut off from the body of the sins of the flesh. The body sins, but one is separated from it. This is proof of eternal security. Even if one does not continue in the faith in the body, the soul is still separated. But what is the**purpose of continuing in the faith and doing good works?** It is for sanctification, to be presented holy and blameless before the presence of God when He judges us for the works done in the body.

The context of Colossians 1 has nothing to do with salvation, but to do with sanctification. Just reading the entire book of Colossians will give you the context. The author’s main point in this book, is that since the Colossians were already saved, they should now live a sanctified life in Christ. Colossians 1:10, 1:23, 2:6-7, 3, 4:12 remind Christians about the sins that should be cast off and the good works that should be done, because of their rewards, not because of hellfire.

>

***Colossians 3:24-25** “Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons.” *

Paul makes it clear that saved by faith Christians can still sin, but they are still saved. Paul would be double-minded then to say that one has to work hard and clean up sins in order to stay saved. Instead, he is saying that the sins of one’s body has nothing to do with the soul’s salvation. He did not mention hell at all here, but reward and judgment only.
