In [Mark 8:14-21](/kjv/mark/8/14-21), the passage talks about the disciples of Jesus partaking in a meal with Him. Jesus suddenly asks them to beware of the leaven. They thought why Jesus suddenly mentions about the bread, but the truth is that Jesus is warning them about the pharisees, and their wrong doctrines.

>

***[Mark 8](/kjv/mark/8): 14-21** “Now the disciples had forgotten to take bread, neither had they in the ship with them more than one loaf. And he charged them, saying, Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod. And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have no bread. And when Jesus knew it, he saith unto them, Why reason ye, because ye have no bread? perceive ye not yet, neither understand? have ye your heart yet hardened? Having eyes, see ye not? and having ears, hear ye not? and do ye not remember? When I brake the five loaves among five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? They say unto him, Twelve. And when the seven among four thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? And they said, Seven. And he said unto them, How is it that ye do not understand?”*

The important takeaway is Jesus uses it as a reminder for the disciples and us Christians, that the Lord is able to use small amounts of broken portions to create countless miracles in our lives, just like how Jesus broke the bread the feed 5000 people.

When we go through broken situations in life, it is easy for us to play the blame game and to focus on the broken pieces, instead of the miracle behind the broken pieces.

#### **Safety**

God breaks us down because He wants to protect us, this may sound contradictory but the Bible can explain that.

King Hezekiah was going through a severely broken situation, he prayed to God for a miracle and to heal him.

>

***[Isaiah 38:1-5](/kjv/isaiah/38/1-5)** “In those days was Hezekiah sick unto death. And Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz came unto him, and said unto him, Thus saith the Lord, Set thine house in order: for thou shalt die, and not live. Then Hezekiah turned his face toward the wall, and prayed unto the Lord, And said, Remember now, O Lord, I beseech thee, how I have walked before thee in truth and with a perfect heart, and have done that which is good in thy sight. And Hezekiah wept sore. Then came the word of the Lord to Isaiah, saying, Go, and say to Hezekiah, Thus saith the Lord, the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will add unto thy days fifteen years.”*

This may seem like a great turning for King Hezekiah since he was healed and had his lifespan prolonged. Nonetheless, this actually brought more harm to the King and his Kingdom.

>

***[Isaiah 39:1-6](/kjv/isaiah/39/1-6)** “At that time Merodachbaladan, the son of Baladan, king of Babylon, sent letters and a present to Hezekiah: for he had heard that he had been sick, and was recovered. And Hezekiah was glad of them, and shewed them the house of his precious things, the silver, and the gold, and the spices, and the precious ointment, and all the house of his armour, and all that was found in his treasures: there was nothing in his house, nor in all his dominion, that Hezekiah shewed them not. Then came Isaiah the prophet unto king Hezekiah, and said unto him, What said these men? and from whence came they unto thee? And Hezekiah said, They are come from a far country unto me, even from Babylon. Then said he, What have they seen in thine house? And Hezekiah answered, All that is in mine house have they seen: there is nothing among my treasures that I have not shewed them. Then said Isaiah to Hezekiah, Hear the word of the Lord of hosts: ****Behold, the days come, that all that is in thine house, and that which thy fathers have laid up in store until this day, shall be carried to Babylon: nothing shall be left, saith the Lord.”*

From these passages, we can clearly see that if King Hezekiah were to follow God’s initial will and allow God to take him to heaven, he would not have committed such foolish sin and ended up suffering bigger losses.

This is why sometimes God afflicts us and puts us through broken situations so that He can prevent us from causing more severe or irreversible damages to ourselves and to those around us.

The greatest miracle, is that we are still alive despite the broken situations we have gone through. That is the mercifulness of God.

#### **Salvation**

We need to realize that our broken pieces can shatter and even soften the hardened hearts of the lost unbelievers. Those who despise Christianity can eventually come to salvation through our testimonies and our sufferings.

>

***[Philippians 1:12](/kjv/philippians/1/12)** “But I would ye should understand, brethren, that the things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel;”*

God breaks us just enough to use us as His vessels to convict our loved ones who sought after the world and its sinfulness.

#### **Strength**

God breaks us so that He can increase our strength continuously. If we are constantly allowed to be in our comfort zone, we become complacent and lazy. When the devil decides to attack us, we become so fragile that we will crumble within seconds.

>

***[James 1:2-3](/kjv/james/1/2-3)** “My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.”*

When we know that our broken situations are just part of God’s trial for us, we can then count it as a joyful experience instead of a painful one.

Just like how a mother eagle would train its baby eagle to fly, is that she will make the nest very uncomfortable to rest on. Our God is just like the mother hen, who takes His blessing away from us one by one, just so that we do not depend on it.

#### **Support**

God breaks us so that we can make miracles to support the lives of others.

>

***[2 Corinthians 1:6](/kjv/2-corinthians/1/6)** “And whether we be afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effectual in the enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer: or whether we be comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation.”*

We suffer so that we can become a blessing to someone else. A great example would be David Brainerd was a great example and a man of untold sufferings, who went through a rough life as a missionary.

He chooses to sacrifice all his worldly prosperous things for the Lord. After becoming a missionary, he was constantly deprived of food supply and suffered from health problems because of the extreme condition he was being put in. He testified to his life experience and put it in a diary, and it became a strong testimony for the missionaries to come like John Wellesley.

#### **Seeds**

God breaks us so that we can produce seeds that grow into fruits.

>

***[John 12:24](/kjv/john/12/24)** “Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.”*

Tertullian once said that the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church.

One example would be Alexander Mackay who went to Uganda to spread the gospel. Despite all the persecution and hardships, Mackay’s sacrifice was not in vain as the King of Uganda came to salvation, along with 17000 people in Uganda. He was considered as the seed to bear fruits for the Lord.

#### **Success**

When we boast our success to others, just remember that those successes come from the Lord. These successes do not come without a cost.

>

***[2 Timothy 3:12](/kjv/2-timothy/3/12)** “Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.”*

>

***[2 Timothy 2:12](/kjv/2-timothy/2/12)** “If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us:”*

[James 1:12](/kjv/james/1/12) Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.

>

***[1 Peter 1:6-7](/kjv/1-peter/1/6-7)** “Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations: That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:”*

>

***[1 Peter 2:21](/kjv/1-peter/2/21)** “For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:”*

>

***[1 Peter 4:14](/kjv/1-peter/4/14)** “If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.”*

These verses are evidence that suffering produces success.

#### **Spirituality**

What’s truly a miracle is wicked sinners like us can become spiritual for the Lord.

>

***[1 Peter 5:10](/kjv/1-peter/5/10)** “But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.”*

We see that preachers such as Adoniram Judson and Alexander Mackay appear to be very matured in spirituality, but it did not come with a cost; without God breaking these people first. These people were made up of broken pieces before.

#### **Supremacy**

God’s inner power is so coveted that not even the devils could comprehend or own. We see a glimpse of God’s supremacy through the martyrs who were burned at the stake but could still maintain a cheerful demeanor singing hymns.

This magnificence is mentioned in [2 Corinthians 12:9](/kjv/2-corinthians/12/9).

>

***[2 Corinthians 12:9](/kjv/2-corinthians/12/9)** “And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”*
