**it came to pass.** Compare [2 Samuel 11:1](../../../kjv/2-samuel/11/1) ; [2 Samuel 12:26-31](../../../kjv/2-samuel/12/26-31) .
**children** = sons.
**David tarried at Jerusalem.** No reference is made here to the result of this tarrying, which is recorded in [2 Samuel 11:1](../../../kjv/2-samuel/11/1) , [2 Samuel 12:25](../../../kjv/2-samuel/12/25) .

**David took.** No discrepancy here, for Joab had summoned David for the purpose ([2 Samuel 12:27](../../../kjv/2-samuel/12/27) ).

**cut.** Hebrew. *sur.* Occurs only here; the meaning "cut" is arbitrary. It must be explained by [2 Samuel 12:31](../../../kjv/2-samuel/12/31) , where it is *sum,* and is rendered "put" = "appointed them [to work] with". See notes there. *Sur* is probably from *yashar =* to regulate, or rule.

**children** = those born.
**the giant.** Hebrew. *raphah,* a descendant of one *Rapha,* who came of the *Nephilim.* See [2 Samuel 21:18-22](../../../kjv/2-samuel/21/18-22) , and App-23 .
