**this thing is done of Me.** As a chastisement for the apostasy of Solomon, and the arrogance of Rehoboam.

**built** = rebuilt.
**for defence.** Evidently these fifteen cities were for defence against Egypt, because of Jeroboam's influence there ([2 Chronicles 10:2](../../../kjv/2-chronicles/10/2) ). His fears were well grounded ([2 Chronicles 12:2](../../../kjv/2-chronicles/12/2) , [2 Chronicles 12:4](../../../kjv/2-chronicles/12/4) and [1 Kings 14:25](../../../kjv/1-kings/14/25) ).

**took him Mahalath . . . and Abihail.** Render "took him with Malahath . . . Abihail".

**all Israel resorted to him.** Thus the mingling of Israel with Judah was continued. See note on [1 Kings 12:17](../../../kjv/1-kings/12/17) .
**coasts** = borders.

**devils** = hairy ones, or goats representing demons.
**he** = Jeroboam.

**after them** = following them.

**set** = gave.

**children** = sons.

**Absalom.** Same as Abishalom ([1 Kings 15:2](../../../kjv/1-kings/15/2) ).

**for.** Note the Figure of speech *Parenthesis.*

**chief** = head.

**them:** i.e. the sons.
**wives** = wives [for them].
