**Abib** is Egyptian and means "green ears". Compare [Exodus 9:31](../../../kjv/exodus/9/31) .[Leviticus 2:14](../../../kjv/leviticus/2/14) . Not found again after this passage. "Nisan" substituted for it.
**the LORD.** Hebrew. *Jehovah.* App-4 .
**God.** Hebrew. *Elohim.* App-4 .

**to place** = to make a habitation for.

**bread of affliction.** Figure of speech *Metonymy* (of Subject) = bread which is the symbol of their affliction in Egypt.
**in haste.** Not the reason given in [Exodus 12:17](../../../kjv/exodus/12/17) for the Exodus. But here the reason why the bread was un-. leavened. There was no time for it to "rise" by fermentation.

**leavened** = fermented. Compare [Exodus 13:7](../../../kjv/exodus/13/7) ; [Exodus 12:18-20](../../../kjv/exodus/12/18-20) .

**gates.** Figure of speech *Synecdoche* (of Part), App-6 , put for the cities themselves. Note the Introversion of the lines of this member, verses: [Deuteronomy 16:5](../../../kjv/deuteronomy/16/5) , [Deuteronomy 16:6](../../../kjv/deuteronomy/16/6) .

**roast** = -cook.

**seventh day.** Compare [Exodus 12:16](../../../kjv/exodus/12/16) ; [Exodus 13:6](../../../kjv/exodus/13/6) .

**corn** = standing corn.

**And.** Note the Figure of speech *Polysyndeton* in this verse. See App-6 .

**in Egypt.** Some codices, with Samaritan Pentateuch and Septuagint, have "in the land of Egypt".

**corn** = threshing-floor Put by Figure of speech *Metonymy* ,
**wine** = winepress. for what is produced from them.

**And.** Note the Figure of speech *Polysyndeton.* App-6 .

**man.** Hebrew. *'ish.* See App-14 .

**thou shalt not.** A special reading, known as *Sevir,* has "neither shalt thou". See App-34 .

**altogether just.** This is the rendering of the Figure of speech *Epizeuxis* ( App-6 ). Hebrew "just, just", i.e. perfectly just.

**grove.** Hebrew. *'asherah.* See App-42 . Here in the feminine gender.
