1:2 saints, (a-17) Saints by [divine] calling.

3:1 fleshly; (i-18) *Sarkinos* . as [Romans 7:14](../../../kjv/romans/7/14) ; [Hebrews 7:16](../../../kjv/hebrews/7/16) ; [2 Corinthians 3:3](../../../kjv/2-corinthians/3/3) . This word is said to mean properly the material -- the composition of a thing. 'Carnal,' twice in verse 3, is *sarkinos* , a form used, in some places, to express either material or physical or moral ideas. It occurs also in [Romans 15:27](../../../kjv/romans/15/27) ; [1 Corinthians 9:11](../../../kjv/1-corinthians/9/11) ; [2 Corinthians 1:12](../../../kjv/2-corinthians/1/12) ; [2 Corinthians 10:4](../../../kjv/2-corinthians/10/4) ; [1 Peter 2:11](../../../kjv/1-peter/2/11) . This last passage, 'fleshly lusts,' shows how the material and moral thoughts run into one another.

3:9 fellow-workmen; (l-5) 'Workers, or labourers *together with God* ,' goes too far. The Greek word has the sense of journeyman, but they are fellows doing the chief's work. see [2 Corinthians 6:1](../../../kjv/2-corinthians/6/1) .

3:13 it (a-16) That is, the day. see [2 Thessalonians 2:8](../../../kjv/2-thessalonians/2/8) .

3:15 fire. (b-24) The addition of the article gives the right sense. 'saved by fire' may mean that the fire was a means of safety, whereas 'through the fire' is in spite of it, or going through the danger and difficulty of it. *Dia* has two distinct uses as 'through' in English. see [1 Peter 3:20](../../../kjv/1-peter/3/20) for the other sense.

3:16 temple (c-9) *Naos* . the house itself -- the shrine.

3:17 temple (c-6) temple (c-15) *Naos* . the house itself -- the shrine. corrupt (d-4) destroy; (d-12) The word for 'destroy' and 'corrupt' is the same in Greek; the force of this is lost in English. see Note d, [Ephesians 4:22](../../../kjv/ephesians/4/22) .

3:18 deceive (e-4) A strong word. See Note at [1 Timothy 2:14](../../../kjv/1-timothy/2/14) . be (f-12) Or 'has the appearance of being.'
