1:4 encourages (a-2) *Parakaleo* , as [Matthew 2:18](../../../kjv/matthew/2/18) ; [Matthew 5:4](../../../kjv/matthew/5/4) ; [Acts 20:12](../../../kjv/acts/20/12) ; [1 Thessalonians 3:7](../../../kjv/1-thessalonians/3/7) . I do not say 'comfort,' as that is rather conveyed in *paramutheomai* , so translated in [1 Thessalonians 2:11](../../../kjv/1-thessalonians/2/11) ; [1 Thessalonians 5:14](../../../kjv/1-thessalonians/5/14) ; 'console,' [John 11:19](../../../kjv/john/11/19) ,[John 11:31](../../../kjv/john/11/31) ; and 'consolation,' [1 Corinthians 14:3](../../../kjv/1-corinthians/14/3) . The difference is slight, but here, as in [Acts 20](../../../kjv/acts/20) , there is the sense of 'cheered,' and this might replace 'encourage' and 'encouragement' if there were a suitable noun.

13:1 matter (d-19) *Rhema* , 'utterance.' see [Deuteronomy 19:15](../../../kjv/deuteronomy/19/15) .

13:3 Christ (e-7) I do not put 'the Christ' here, though there be the article, because it is specially connected with the speaking.

13:4 in (f-8) by (f-13) *Ek* , characterizing the principle on which it took place.

13:5 yourselves, (g-19) 'Yourselves' is ambiguous in English; but it is the accusative after 'recognize,' not 'yourselves know' but 'know yourselves.'

13:10 authority (h-21) Or 'power;' it is *exousia* , 'title,' not mere competency. see Note, [Matthew 10:1](../../../kjv/matthew/10/1) . overthrowing. (i-34) See ch. 10.8.

13:11 rejoice; (k-5) Or 'farewell.' perfected; (l-7) As 'perfectly united,' [1 Corinthians 1:10](../../../kjv/1-corinthians/1/10) .

13:14 communion (m-15) Or 'fellowship,' *koinonia* , as [1 Corinthians 1:9](../../../kjv/1-corinthians/1/9) .
