Prayer That Goes Beyond Dispensations 14 min. read ![](https://het.realbiblebelievers.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/missing.jpg) ## Prayer Throughout the Dispensations Pastor Kim begins by explaining that his church believes in a doctrine called dispensationalism. **What is dispensationalism?** [Dispensationalism](https://realbiblebelievers.com/dispensationalism) teaches that there are different time periods, and throughout these different time periods, the Lord was working out things in different ways. When reading the Bible, not all the verses are going to apply to the present time. There are verses that apply to the Old Testament, verses that apply to the Millennium, and other verses that apply to the Tribulation. When one verse says faith and works for salvation, and then a different verse says faith alone, not by works, for salvation, the solution is simple. The faith-and-works salvation will apply to a different time period, whereas faith alone, not by works, will apply to the Church Age, which is today. God’s systems and His dealings with mankind have changed. One of the most important things throughout life is understanding that throughout different time periods, things have changed consistently. God’s miracles, for example—His visions and healings, and the speaking of tongues during that time—changed. God ended those things when God temporarily forsook the nation of Israel and finally switched to the Gentiles. During that time of transition between the Old Testament and the Church Age, between Jew and Gentile, this is undoubtable when reading the Book of Acts. But what did the Jews do? They rejected it. Because of that, God switched to the Gentiles. God’s program with the Jewish people was done. But there is something that did not change from the Old Testament to the New Testament: **prayer**. Old Testament saints practiced prayer just like the New Testament saints. During the Tribulation, they have their prayer in Revelation 6. Another example concerning why prayer did not change throughout dispensations while other things did is God’s kingdom and how He set things up has always changed. It switched from physical to spiritual in how He set up the kingdoms. ### Prayer Before Baptism, the Sabbath, and Sacrifice Water baptism is another example. Water baptism— immersion—the first time we see it mentioned is in the Book of Matthew, which is like the verge of the New Testament. But **prayer** was long before baptism. The Mosaic law of observing the Sabbath day—**prayer** was long before observing the Sabbath day. Noah—Abraham **prayed** to the Lord before the Ten Commandments. Prayer was there. How about sacrificing animals? Officially, it wasn’t starting until Moses. Before then, they were doing sacrifices of animals. But there was a prolonged period of time where the Jews did not do sacrifices of animals, and God said they ought to get back to that again with Moses. But what always continued throughout that time? **Prayer**. The Jews gave a cry out to the Lord to deliver their burdens. They didn’t sacrifice animals, but they were praying. One thing that did not change from beginning to end is prayer. ### Prayer Before the Word of God One of the most precious things anyone will ever have in their hand is the Word of God. But prayer was always before the Word of God. The complete Word of God was not in people’s hands until many years later, when they had the whole Book. But prayer was long before that. ### Prayer in the Millennium and Eternity In the Millennium, people will have to come to God to worship Him. In that sense, they will be praying to Him because they will have to communicate and talk to Him. The point is that what God desires is **communion**: mankind communicating with God. In the Millennium and eternity, mankind will speak to Him face to face. Throughout these different periods, there are differences in prayer. During one period, people are praying in vengeance for their enemies. Today, under the Age of Grace, Christians pray for help and His grace. In the Old Testament, they focused a lot on physical elements, prosperity, a physical Kingdom, etc. There were differences in prayer, but prayer itself did not change. Communicating with God did not change. ### Prayer Before Soul-Winning Soul-winning did not start until the Book of Acts, where Jesus gave that command. But what was before soul-winning? Prayer. Basically, Pastor Kim’s point is this: if all the things a Christian is supposed to do are placed together—Bible reading, prayer, soul-winning, church attendance, abstaining from sin, growing in knowledge and doctrine, etc.—**prayer should be the most important thing in life.** If a person were going to pick just one, if there were only one choice, Pastor Kim says he would pick prayer. Someone might ask, “Above the Word of God?” This might sound blasphemous, but Pastor Kim says it is very true. Why? Even during the days of the Church Age, when Christians did not have full free access to the entire Word of God, they had manuscripts and had to memorize verses. But what never left them was the power of prayer. Why is prayer more important? If a person prays to the Lord, He gives that person the Word of God. If a person prays to the Lord, He will give that person a church to attend. If a person prays to the Lord for truth, He will give that person the truth. If a person prays to the Lord for strength and the opportunity to win souls, prayer is what leads to everything else. **If prayer is the weakest link in someone’s life, Pastor Kim says that person should be scared and troubled.** If someone wins more souls than they pray, or knows more doctrine than they pray, that is something that needs to be checked in that person’s life. ## Daniel’s Example of Prayer Pastor Kim turns to Daniel 6. How often did they pray in the Old Testament? > ***Daniel 6:10:****“Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime.”* Daniel prayed three times a day. During that time, a person had to have a high priest—a human high priest—to go only once a year. He had to make sure he was covered under the blood when he went around the temple so that he could speak to the Holy of Holies. But Christians have a better Mediator. That is Jesus Christ, the High Priest, and He goes before the throne every day on their behalf when they pray to Him. That means Christians have better access to prayer and a more important opportunity to pray than the Old Testament saints. If Old Testament saints prayed three times a day and a Christian does not, that is something to check in one’s life. Pastor Kim is not saying that everyone has to make a routine like some Muslim praying five times a day, facing toward Mecca. He is not telling Christians to do something like that. The point is the time and frequency of prayer. Prayer needs to happen more than it did with the Old Testament saints. It does not have to be a ritualized format. It is like speaking to God as a normal conversation. Pastor Kim knows this: the reason the Lord blessed the church with a lot of fruit is because someone or somebody was praying. The church had a member who prayed two to five hours every day. Pastor Kim noticed that whenever this person prayed concerning their enemies and concerning the work of the Internet and souls being saved, the church was blessed with fruit. After that person passed away, Pastor Kim believed that a third of the church’s power was lost. Why? Because somebody was praying on behalf of the church, and that person was no longer there. Christians have to spend a lot of time in prayer. ## Coming Boldly to the Throne of Grace Pastor Kim turns to Hebrews 4. In the Old Testament, people did not have the right to speak to God face-to-face because God is holy. But now Christians have a High Priest who intercedes on their behalf. During that time, it was a time of law and strictness, and the Old Testament saints had to carefully check their lives when they were praying to the Lord. But now Christians are covered by the blood of Jesus Christ. They are not under the law; they are under grace. Prayer should therefore be taken more seriously now. Why? Jesus Christ covered them, so they have more opportunity and freedom for God to hear them during this time. God took it more strictly in hearing people out during that time. That is why the Old Testament saints were really serious about their works. But today is the Church Age. What is the Church Age called? The Age of Grace. When Christians take that as a license to sin, their prayer communication becomes weakened and broken. Perhaps the Old Testament saints had better prayers answered than Christians today because they took their lives more seriously and inspected themselves more seriously. Jesus Christ has already covered Christians completely, so there is no need to cover themselves. > ***Hebrews 4:16:****“Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”* Christians are under the Age of Grace. That is why they have more access and more freedom to pray. Pastor Kim asks who or what being would want to make sure that a Christian’s prayer life is weaker compared to the Old Testament. The answer is Satan. ## Laodicea and the Weakening of Prayer Pastor Kim turns to Revelation 3. Why does the Antichrist kingdom have to come? Why is Laodicea the worst age of apostasy? During the time of the Church Age, there were people during the Great Awakening revivals and missionaries during the missionary era. There were early Christians who suffered under severe persecution from the Roman Catholic Empire and early pagan Rome. During that time, they had better prayer lives. Pastor Kim says that Christians today are under the Age of Laodicea. Laodicea has shut God out through the loss of the power of prayer. Why does apostasy have to happen? Because the prayer lives of Christians have weakened. Pastor Kim says that Christians are at the worst state of apostasy. The apostate Christians, apostate churches, and lost people should not be blamed. Christians are at fault because their prayer life was weak. > ***Revelation 3:15-16** “I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.”* > ***Revelation 3:20** “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.”* Pastor Kim asks whether that applies to Christians right now. When was the last time a Christian did Revelation 3:20? When was the last time God was saying, “Let’s talk, child”? Instead, people say they are too busy with work and school and all the things going on. They have a ministry to take care of. They are Bible-believing preachers and have to take care of the members and the people in the church. Pastor Kim says there is no spiritual excuse for skipping prayer in the prayer life. God is saying, “Can we talk now?” When was the last time He actually entered inside a person’s heart, and that person sat down with Him and had a good talk with Jesus Christ? That is why Laodicea happens. Laodicea has to happen because Christ is knocking at the heart, and people did not let Him in. Why? > ***Revelation 3:17** “Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked.”* Pastor Kim says this applies to the typical American. People are too busy going ten seconds per minute and doing everything quickly. They want to get things fast, fast, fast, and do it, do it faster, faster, faster. They drive like a reckless train wreck, passing stoplights and going ninety miles per hour while driving on the freeway and trying to get to their destination. They say, “I gotta take care of this. Oh, I gotta take care of that.” Sometimes people are the ones who add burdens they do not need. They are rich and increased with goods. Because of that, people become lazy and do not want to pray. That makes prayer feel like hard work and effort. Because of that, the Antichrist can come, the New World Order has to come, and the Tribulation has to happen because it is the Christians’ fault. ## The Great Awakening and the Power of Prayer Pastor Kim asks how the Great Awakening revivals happened. How did they start? They started with the power of prayer. The first Great Awakening revival—one of the first instances involved Jonathan Edwards and his sermon *Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God*. What happened after that? They held an all-night prayer meeting. Ever since that time, there have been story after story of Great Awakening revivals. How did Christians get the King James Bible? It came through the prayer of a man who was burned at the stake. He prayed, “Lord, open the king of England’s eyes.” He also considers the freedom of the country today. He acknowledges that it is not completely free and that it is controlled by darker forces, but compared to Russia, China, and other places, people are living in freedom. How did that freedom start? It started with people who actually prayed to the Lord. Some people say that George Washington was a Mason. Pastor Kim says he has dug through all the conspiracies and even research. According to him, Washington was supportive and almost even a Baptist. Washington, when he knelt on that ground during the Revolutionary Wars, during the cold of winter, knelt on the snow praying to the Lord. Even if he was a Mason, Pastor Kim says, a Mason had a better prayer life than the people who claim to be better than the elites and the conspiracies. People become prideful, conceited, and arrogant Christians because they know so much doctrine and knowledge and think they are right with God. Pastor Kim says they had better start their prayer life. That is the most valuable thing. ## The Revival in Wales Pastor Kim gives another story. There was a revival going on in Wales, and they held constant days of revival. Why? An old spinster, Pastor Kim thinks, past the age of eighty or something, and his wife got together and prayed to the Lord to send revival at Wales. Five elderly people prayed. Pastor Kim says that people overlook the number-one thing. People get upset that they cannot attend church anymore because they are old and hospitalized in bed. They underestimate the power of prayer. People say, “I’m not able to soul-win anymore, and I’m not able to witness.” They underestimate the power of prayer. Some people in persecuted countries do not have a Bible to read. They mourn and cry because they do not have the precious Word of God to read. How often have persecuted people been praying to the Lord? This is a conviction for everybody. It does not matter who someone is—rich, elderly, young, or a rich American who ought to know better. Everybody underestimates the power of prayer. If someone is unable to do all these things, everything of a church member, and says, “I want to do what Pastor Gene Kim does,” the devil has blinded that person’s eyes into losing the value of prayer. If someone is elderly and stuck at home and cannot read the Bible anymore because their eyes are dim, or cannot talk anymore, that person should spend that time praying to the Lord. That is a sermon for every single person.
