***[Isaiah 51:14](/kjv/isaiah/51/14)** “The captive exile hasteneth that he may be loosed, and that he should not die in the pit, nor that his bread should fail.”*

This passage talks about Isaiah preaching God’s judgment upon the children of Israel, but he also preaches on the restoration of their nation after their captivity under the Babylonians.

It seems at first that the Israelites fell into this blackout that they could not get out, and desperately wanted to be delivered so that they can live prosperously again and not die in the pit.

This passage has a spiritual application to us Christians, that sometimes we may also fall into or get stuck in a black hole, and can’t get out.

This black pit resembles an inner void in the depth of our soul, which is called fear; emptiness; depression; anger; blame game; complaining, and bitterness.

Whatever it is, it seems like we are stuck in this black hole despite our massive effort to try to get out.

This is a story about a man who used to inherit a beautiful land and a house, he lived in that beautiful property but there was a deep dark hole in the middle of his property. One time he fell inside that hole and he couldn’t get out, then he saw a long branch that was stuck on the side of the pit, and he grabbed onto it to pull himself out of the black hole.

This man/character is referring to us, but instead of choosing to climb out of the hole, sometimes we would just sit in the hole, whine, and complain about howbeit getting out of the hole with the branch sticking out.

Most often God provides us the branches, the roots for us to grab hold onto them, but instead of being appreciative, we tend to complain about the fragility of the roots, or they might cause a scratch on our skin etc. Moreover, other times we may also complain the climb to get out will be too long, too troublesome, which refers to prayers and Bible reading, which will cause us a lot of inconveniences.

This is why we remain stuck in the black hole of depression and misery because we always expect an easier or a better way. We may not like the route of faith, but that is God’s promise to us, and our only way out of the hole.

Although God allows us to resort to our free will, which is why most of us may sometimes choose the worldly way to ‘get out of the hole’, we know that the consequences may end up causing more misery in us.

Sin will only give us temporary pleasure, the worldly solutions will not last forever.

When free will kicks in, so does our common sense, we tend to make decisions out of common sense rather than our emotion because then we will start to rationalize the situations and context we are being put in, and assess our abilities to perform the actions based on our free will.

Secondly, fear also kicks in when we are given free will. We will be more cautious of how we appear in front of our family or worry about how the consequences of our sin will affect our family members.

Even existential psychology argues that by the end of the day, we have the free will to ultimately shape our life choices. Nothing can take control of our lives, we are the ones that make the decision ultimately; God does not interfere with that.

Also to remind ourselves that when we have decided to climb out of the black hole, we should stop blaming our environment or people around us in the past who cause us to be miserable and live in despair.

If we do that, it just comes to show that we don’t appreciate or really want to get out of the black hole, because this indicates hesitation in our actions.

So what would you do if you are left with only that one vine/branch?

Let’s be that Christian who immediately grabs on to that one branch; embrace Bible reading, fellowshipping with members, prayer, attending church instead of being a complainer.

Sometimes, that one branch also reminds us that we can only depend on God to help us get out of the black hole, and that requires complete faith in God, truly yielding ourselves to Him, and letting God take care of our sorrows and worries for us.

Lastly, once we get out of the black hole, we should develop an attitude filled with gratefulness for what we have; just like the man in the story who is able to live in and enjoy his beautiful property again. Even if the hole remains there, we just do our best to stay away from it and focus on the riches that God gives us. This will help us to be genuinely thankful for God’s blessings.

The story ends with the guy living happily ever after, fishing on the brook, catching fish, enjoying nature, and staying away from the black hole. Let’s strive for the same happy ending as the man.
