# Gene Kim’s Best Recommendations on Prayer

Pastor Gene Kim begins by emphasizing the priority and importance of prayer. Many Christians are fascinated by current events, prophecy, the end times, deep doctrine, or something new and interesting. Yet prayer and a personal relationship with God are often not treated as the number-one priority.

Pastor Kim hopes these lessons will be a blessing and help believers develop their prayer lives. He recommends that believers work through these materials because they cover many different areas of prayer.

## Classical Preachers and Books on Prayer

Pastor Kim also recommends studying classical preachers and books that have focused heavily on prayer. However, he gives an important qualification.

Many of these men lived in earlier periods and did not have the same access to Bible-believing teaching and accumulated doctrinal understanding available today. Therefore, some of their teachings may contain errors. Pastor Kim encourages believers not to become upset when they discover that a classical preacher taught something incorrectly.

Instead, believers should filter what they read through Scripture. They can overlook the errors while gleaning whatever is doctrinally and spiritually right. These men lived in different periods and had to study and search out many things that believers today may have the luxury of receiving from Bible-believing preachers and teachers.

The important principle is to compare everything with Scripture. Do not simply accept everything a famous preacher says. Take what is right, reject what is wrong, and use Scripture as the final standard.

## Leonard Ravenhill

One of the classical prayer preachers Pastor Kim recommends is **Leonard Ravenhill**.

Pastor Kim suggests searching for Ravenhill’s teachings specifically on prayer. He also recommends audio recordings featuring Ravenhill and other prayer warriors. The Hackberry House produces great audio recordings on Leonard Ravenhill and other classical prayer preachers.

## Charles Spurgeon

Another major recommendation is **Charles Spurgeon**.

Of the classical preachers Pastor Kim has studied, Spurgeon is probably the one from whom he has gleaned the most concerning prayer.

Part of the reason is that Spurgeon’s writings often emphasize the devotional aspect of one’s relationship with God. Pastor Kim notes that older literature can sometimes feel redundant to modern readers because classical writers frequently repeated certain words and ideas in order to emphasize them.

## Andrew Murray

Pastor Kim also recommends **Andrew Murray**, who has many recordings and writings concerning prayer.

Believers can search for “Andrew Murray + prayer” on Youtube to glean lessons from his emphasis on the subject.

## George Müller

Another major example is **George Müller**.

Müller is famous for his prayer life and for trusting God to provide for the orphanages he operated. Pastor Kim points to the many prayer requests Müller recorded and the numerous answers to prayer associated with his ministry. He recommends listening to recordings about Müller and reading biographies of his life, particularly material concerning his prayer life.

## E. M. Bounds

For books, Pastor Kim recommends **E. M. Bounds’ Complete Works on Prayer**.

He describes it as one of the most famous collections of books on prayer and highly recommends obtaining the complete version. He considers the material phenomenal and life-changing, with eight classic explorations of prayer.

## The Kneeling Christian

Another recommended book is **The Kneeling Christian**.

The author originally published the work anonymously, reflecting a humble and prayerful spirit. Pastor Kim identifies **Albert Richardson** in connection with the work. Again, however, the material should be read through the lens of Scripture. Believers should filter out anything doctrinally incorrect and concentrate on what agrees with the Bible.

When this is done, Pastor Kim believes there are many things to glean concerning prayer, answered prayer, suffering in the Christian life, spiritual relationships, and obtaining spiritual power in the prayer life.

## David Brainerd

Pastor Kim also recommends the **Life and Diary of David Brainerd**. Brainerd is famously associated with an intense prayer life. It has been said that the snow would melt around him while he prayed.

Pastor Kim recommends reading Brainerd’s life and diary to learn from his prayer life. Once again, he emphasizes that believers should filter what they read through Scripture, overlooking errors and retaining what is doctrinally right.

Pastor Kim also notes that **John Wesley** said that if there were one book a man should read, it should be the *Life and Diary of David Brainerd*.

## John Nelson Hyde

Another example is **John Nelson Hyde**. Pastor Kim recommends searching for John Hyde’s teachings and biographies concerning prayer. Type “John Hyde + prayer” on Youtube to search.

Hyde became known for his intense prayer life. According to the accounts Pastor Kim references, famous preachers such as Wilbur Chapman asked Hyde to pray for their meetings because of the results associated with his prayers. There is also an account that when Hyde died, his heart was found to have shifted from its normal position because of the intensity of his prayer life.

Pastor Kim recommends studying Hyde’s biography to learn how he prayed and to understand the intensity of his devotion to prayer.

# Bible-Believing Preachers on Prayer

Pastor Kim then moves from classical prayer teachers to Bible-believing preachers whom he recommends for studying prayer.

## Dr. David Walker

Pastor Kim recommends **Dr. David Walker** of Calvary Baptist Church.

In particular, he recommends [Walker’s series on the Lord’s Prayer.](https://www.sermonaudio.com/series/39537) Walker goes through the different parts of the Lord’s Prayer and provides introductory teaching concerning the subject.

Pastor Kim acknowledges the dispensational distinction concerning the Lord’s Prayer: it is doctrinally associated with the Tribulation. Nevertheless, Dr. Walker shows how principles from it can be spiritually applied to the Christian life without making the claim that it is doctrinally directed to the Body of Christ.

Pastor Kim considers the series highly valuable for studying prayer.

## Dr. David Peacock

Pastor Kim describes Peacock’s preaching as deep, spiritual, and impactful. He especially recommends listening to Peacock’s teaching concerning a personal, one-on-one relationship with God and prayer.

## Pastor Brian Donovan

Pastor Kim directs believers to KJV1611.org and recommends searching for Brian Donovan’s lessons on prayer.

Pastor Kim recalls listening to one of Donovan’s sermons on prayer and describes the experience as deeply convicting and spiritually moving. He says that listening to Donovan’s preaching caused him to get right with God and had a significant effect on his own prayer life.

## Dr. Peter S. Ruckman

Pastor Kim also recommends **Dr. Peter S. Ruckman**.

For believers who become bored with spiritual subjects because of lengthy or repetitive explanations, Pastor Kim notes that Ruckman had a way of drawing things out and making them easier to follow for a generation accustomed to visual media.

More importantly, Pastor Kim emphasizes Ruckman’s priority of doctrine. His sermons and teachings on prayer are recommended because they approach the subject from a doctrinal perspective.

# Keeping a Prayer Diary

Pastor Kim’s final recommendation is to use a **prayer diary**.

He points again to KJV1611.org, where believers can find material associated with Pastor Donovan, Dr. Ruckman, [the prayer diary](https://kjv1611.org/products/prayer-diary-journal-prayer-request-booklet-other-options-available?_pos=3&_sid=7891dc6a6&_ss=r), and some of the books previously mentioned, including E. M. Bounds’ writings on prayer, *The Kneeling Christian*, and the *Life and Diary of David Brainerd*.

He recommends purchasing these materials together through the bookstore when possible, although believers can use another source if they find the material cheaper elsewhere.

The prayer diary provides a practical way to organize prayer requests. A person can write down someone’s name, indicate whether the person is saved or lost, and record the date. If someone is not saved, the prayer diary can also remind the believer to pray for that person’s salvation.

He explains that earlier in his own prayer life, before developing his own prayer journal, he purchased many of these prayer diaries. He would fill them with prayer requests and sometimes have several journals open at once while praying. Some of the requests were old, so he would have two, three, or even four prayer journals open while spending extended periods of time in prayer.

He therefore strongly recommends using a prayer diary and spending extended periods praying to the Lord.

# Developing a Personal Prayer Life

For beginners, spending hours in prayer may initially seem extremely difficult. Pastor Kim recommends starting gradually. Believers who struggle with prayer can begin with smaller amounts of time and work toward longer periods of personal, quiet fellowship with God.

The important thing is to begin.

As a person gets down on his knees and spends quiet time alone with God, his relationship with the Lord can deepen. Eventually, he may reach a point where spending personal time with God becomes a natural and deeply valued part of his Christian life. Pastor Kim describes this as **relationship 101**.

Once a believer reaches that place in his prayer life, he will be continually blessed by the power and relationship found in prayer.
