He had read many works by prayer warriors and people such as George Müller, who was known as a man of prayer and is probably one of the most famous examples, as well as E. M. Bounds and John Hyde. What was very powerful about these men was that when they prayed to the Lord, **it was as though they knew their prayers would be answered.** Most of the time, Christians pray during times of uncertainty. Satanic forces are attacking, the trials of this world are hitting, and the flesh is struggling with temptation and sin. Sometimes all these things seem to hit at once. For a newborn Christian, when all of this hits at once, the response is obviously not, “I know what is going to happen next.” It is, “Why is this happening? Lord, I do not understand. Lord, I need Your help.” But if you look at these men of prayer, they were not confused or depressed. They knew they had faith. That is the key. Newborn Christians are saved by faith. Faith does not require great faith; it is like the faith of a child, as Jesus mentioned. But Christians grow in faith. As they spiritually grow, their faith becomes stronger. Hopefully, as newborn Christians, their faith grows until it becomes established in faith, just like these men. They went through so many things and prayed through them so many times that their faith became established more and more. That is the key. The reason a Christian is confused and does not know what is going to happen in the future is often because he is still a newborn Christian. He has not yet seen how God answers prayers. He has not experienced enough of those situations to know which prayers God answered and which prayers God did not answer. He has seen how the Holy Spirit move, but perhaps not enough to have developed that established faith. ## Faith Is Established Through Experience Pastor Kim says that many people may think of him as a very spiritual preacher, but he is very honest about himself. He does not consider himself a holy person or a great person. If there is anything spiritual that people see in him, he says it is because **he surrendered himself to God.** In fact, at the age of fourteen, he surrendered himself completely to God, even to torture and death. He hopes that he can continue in that surrender. If the same situation happened now, he does not know what might happen because he is still flesh and is capable of weakness. When he entered the ministry, many things immediately began happening. He wondered why God would allow all these things to happen. The reason, he says, was so that he could start praying more. The more he prayed and experienced God’s working, the more those experiences built up his newborn faith into a larger faith. After experiencing enough of these things, he began to know what was going to happen next. Sometimes Christians wonder: “Pastor, these bad things are happening in our church.” “Pastor, they are saying bad things about you online.” “Pastor, we just went through a church split.” “Pastor, your wife died.” “Pastor, your child passed away.” There can be many bad things happening, and the members are the ones who become weak and panic. Yet, for some reason, the pastor may be the one who remains strong. Why? Because the pastor has been through enough of these things. The people who are new to the church are newly experiencing these problems. But a pastor who has been through similar situations before may be able to say, “Stick around. You will see this bad thing happening, that bad thing happening,” and then those things come to pass. The pastor has been through those situations before. The people who are fresh into the church are experiencing them for the first time. That is why pastors can sometimes seem stronger and more at peace. They have more faith because they have experienced and prayed through these things. Eventually, they reach a point where, whatever bad thing happens, they know God is going to take care of it. They have seen God pull them through so many times through prayer that they know that if another bad thing happens, it is going to be all right. Pastor Kim gives the example of enemies attacking him online. He has seen how God dealt with those situations before. Because he has experienced God’s working repeatedly, he has confidence that God will take care of future attacks as well. ## Tribulation, Patience, Experience, and Hope Pastor Kim then turns to Romans chapter 5 and James chapter 1 to show the pattern. > ***Romans 5:1–5:** “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. And not only so, but we glory in **tribulations** also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;**And patience, experience; and experience, hope: And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.”* Notice the pattern. Christians are saved by grace through faith. Because they have salvation by faith and grace, they are standing upon that foundation. But what happens next? Tribulations. When a person gets saved and begins attending a Bible-believing church, he may suddenly find himself going through all kinds of unusual and difficult things. Problems arise, difficulties come, and trials begin. God is building the Christian through these experiences. Before someone comes to the truth of the Bible, while that person is lost in sin, the devil may not bother him in the same way. But once a person begins growing in biblical truth, difficulties may arise. This can seem negative, but ultimately it establishes peace and confidence. The peace Christians want is not the kind of peace where every problem is carried away and eliminated for them. If that were the kind of peace they wanted, they would always live in fear of the next problem. Instead, Christians should desire the kind of peace in which, no matter what problems happen, they can remain at peace. That kind of peace can only be developed by going through trials. Romans 5 gives the progression: **Tribulation → Patience → Experience → Hope.** During tribulation, patience is developed. Through patience comes experience. Through experience comes hope. And hope is connected with the love of God being shed abroad in the heart by the Holy Ghost. Pastor Kim says that many people may currently be in the stage of patience. During that stage, they are supposed to be praying. Prayer and patience go together. ## Patience and Prayer > ***James 5:10–11: “**Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience. Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy.”* The patience comes through suffering and affliction. Romans 5 says that tribulation works patience. But then James continues by connecting this patience with prayer. > ***James 5:16–18: “**Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.”* Notice**what goes together with patience and trials: prayer.** If a person is saved by faith and has a tender heart toward Jesus, then when confusion and affliction come, those trials can force him to pray. They force him to ask brothers and sisters in Christ to pray for him. They get him involved in prayer. That is why trials can be good for a Christian. When a person is finally forced into praying, his faith becomes more established. Then he moves toward the pattern described in Romans 5, where experience establishes hope and the love of God is shed abroad in the heart. ## Faith, Hope, and Charity > ***1 Corinthians 13:13: “**And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.”* Faith, hope, and charity are three of the greatest gifts God has blessed Christians with in life. Once faith becomes highly established through these experiences, hope becomes more established as well. Then, as a Christian continues to grow, he begins to understand that the most important thing in life is charity, i.e. the importance of loving God and loving one another. Pastor Kim says that one thing he has noticed about Bible-believing preachers is that some of them began their ministries very strongly and preached or worked aggressively as missionaries. But what caused some of them to become softer and more loving toward people and toward God? It was the trials and afflictions they went through. Through these experiences, they went through the pattern of faith, patience, experience, and hope, and eventually reached a greater maturity in love. Pastor Kim says that Christians should want to become the kind of people who reach that maturity at the end—people who have the kind of faith that believes whatever God does will truly be for the best. ## Adding to Faith > ***2 Peter 1:4–7: “**Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.”* Because of salvation, Christians have exceeding great and precious promises. The progression is: **Faith → Virtue → Knowledge → Temperance → *Patience* → Godliness → Brotherly Kindness → Charity.** Patience comes after faith, and charity comes at the end of the progression. This is why Pastor Kim says trials and afflictions can be good for Christians. They establish these important elements and help bring Christians toward maturity. ## Trials, Prayer, Faith, and Patience > **James 1:2–8:  “**My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into**divers temptations**; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh **patience**. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.” The Christian is saved by faith, and when that faith is being built up, he goes through temptation and trials. Through those experiences, faith works patience. This is the stage in which the Christian is supposed to take the opportunity to pray. Why? The Christian asks God in faith, not wavering. Patience must have its perfect work so that the Christian may become perfect and entire, wanting nothing. Without faith, the Christian will not receive what he is asking for. ## The Prayer Warriors Who Knew Their Prayers Would Be Answered This brings Pastor Kim back to what originally puzzled him about the great prayer warriors. When they prayed, they were not thinking, “It may be possible that I will get it, or I may not get it.” They prayed with confidence. They knew they were going to get an answer. They did not pray, “If I am going to get it.” They prayed as though it were a matter of when they would get it. But then there is an important problem. The Bible teaches that prayer must be according to God’s will. When Christians pray according to God’s will, they often do not know God’s entire plan. Many times, God does not say yes. He may answer yes, no, or wait. So how could these men pray with such confidence and know that the answer would be yes? Pastor Kim says the answer is simple: **the more a person grows in God, the more he knows about God’s working and His will.**That understanding is established through reading God’s Word. It also comes through attending church, hearing other brothers and sisters in Christ testify about how God worked in their lives, and listening to the preacher explain the Word of God. These basics are important. Christians need to attend a Bible-believing church and continue reading the Bible so that they can know more about how God’s will works. The more they become established in God’s will, the more they understand what pleases Him. Then, when they pray, they increasingly know what to pray for according to His will. ## Praying According to God’s Will One reason God answers no to certain prayer requests is that they are not according to His will. Pastor Kim points again to James and warns about praying for something that is consumed upon one’s lust. A great deal of prayer can be motivated by the flesh. Therefore, he says it is better to pray according to God’s will than to arrogantly claim, “I know God is going to answer this prayer.” It is actually safer to be uncertain and say: “Lord, I do not know the answer, but I surrender it according to Your will.” It is safer to pray that way than to arrogantly claim to know that something is God’s will and then discover that it was not God’s will. Why is the latter more dangerous? Because of human nature. Pastor Kim includes himself when he says that, in the fleshly mind, people can confuse something spiritual with something fleshly. James warns Christians to be careful about praying for something that is consumed upon their lusts. God is not going to answer a prayer that comes from that motivation. This is especially dangerous among Christians who are arrogant about what they believe God will do. They may think they know exactly how God will answer, yet their confidence may actually come from the flesh. That same fleshly pride can appear when people become divisive, pick fights over doctrine, or believe they can correct everyone around them. ## How to Know Whether You Are Growing Spiritually How does a person know whether he is prideful or genuinely spiritual? Pastor Kim says the simplicity of the answer is to look at how much time is being spent on the things that matter. How much time is being spent on the word of God, on the church, on getting closer to God? The testimony to other Bible believers is important. Many Bible believers have social and personality issues. If people around them continually see those problems, that may indicate that they are not filled with God. People can sometimes think, “Unless I am filled with God, I cannot know whether I am of God.” But Pastor Kim says that spiritual growth is not always determined by what a person observes in himself. Sometimes other people are the ones who observe the growth. Arrogant and proud people tend to look at themselves. Humble people do not focus on themselves in the same way. Other people may be the ones who recognize their spiritual growth. When other people see spiritual growth, that is evidence that a person is becoming more spiritual. As a person becomes increasingly filled with God, he knows God’s will and understands how God’s will works in his life. Then, when he gives a prayer request, he can increasingly know whether God is going to answer it. But **what helps faith greatly is surrender.** ## Surrendering the Answer to God When focusing on faith in prayer, the Christian should focus on the will of God. He should be able to say: “God, if You answer yes, no, or wait, I have complete faith and confidence that however You answer, it will be the best.” When a Christian prays this way, God reveals His will more and more over time. Then he can pray more confidently, knowing that when he gives certain prayer requests, God is going to answer them. That is where the great prayer warriors were. They had already developed such a strong prayer life that they knew their prayers would be answered. Pastor Kim has experienced situations where enemies attacked him, and he prayed to the Lord knowing that God would take care of them. He has prayed before about enemies, and then watched God act in the following season. Likewise, when he goes through family problems, personal problems, trials, financial problems, mental struggles, and other trials, he can pray to the Lord knowing that God will take care of them. Why? Because he has been through many such situations. Those experiences have developed his faith and increased his understanding of God’s will. ## Prioritizing God and Others Pastor Kim says there is one thing he hopes Christians learn from the lesson, especially as he has been preaching about prioritizing God and others on Sundays. God has worked on his charity and has helped him see the importance of it more and more. The goal is to become the kind of prayer warrior who can pray with genuine confidence that God will answer. But reaching that level does not mean developing fleshly arrogance. The way to grow in faith is to surrender everything to God’s will. Then, in time, He will reveal His will more and more. It takes patience. Many people are impatient, but God’s working is revealed in His timing.
