When these perspectives are examined, Pastor Kim argues that Christianity and the Bible are the only right things. ## Faith Has Substance and Evidence > *[Hebrews 11:1](/kjv/hebrews/11/1): **“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”*** The Christian faith is not empty. Notice the words **“substance”** and **“evidence.”**Substance shows that faith is not empty. It has something. It is: **“The substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”**Christianity contains evidence, and this can be examined philosophically, scientifically, mathematically, historically, and in other ways. ## The Scientific Evidence First, consider science. What is science? Science involves taking an experiment and obtaining empirical evidence through firsthand observation and testing. Pastor Kim studied research at the graduate level. In research, there can be significant **bias** when scientists conduct empirical studies because their **preconceived beliefs** about what they were taught in school or what they already believe can influence how they interpret their findings. If the results of an experiment conflict with what they already believe, they may conclude that something must have gone wrong with the experiment and repeat it. A lot of the research presented as empirical evidence is not necessarily as straightforward as people think. Science is something that can be empirically tested. ## Why Evolution Is Not Empirical in the Same Way Why isn’t evolution true? Pastor Kim’s argument is that evolution, in the sense of one organism gradually becoming a completely different kind of organism, is not something that can simply be observed empirically. People can see something gradually evolve, change, or transition. But that is different from observing one organism evolving beyond its scope into a totally different kind of organism. Consider what happens when intelligent beings intentionally transform something. It requires intelligence. That is why scientists in laboratories design experiments and put things into place. This is intelligent design. ## Intelligent Design and Entropy When something is deliberately designed and changed, there is an intelligent person behind the process. That is empirical evidence because this is something people observe every day. For something to be left entirely by itself and naturally transform into a complicated organism such as a human being is impossible. Human beings are complicated organisms. How can such complexity arise through simply leaving something alone? Pastor Kim connects this argument with the second law of thermodynamics. The second law concerns entropy. The basic point being presented is that things naturally tend toward breakdown rather than automatically becoming more complex. Everything falls apart. It does not simply evolve into something better. This is the opposite of what Pastor Kim argues is required by evolutionary theory. Consider the odds of leaving an organism alone and having it eventually become the kind of complex organism that exists today. The odds would be extraordinarily small. Pastor Kim refers to scientists and scholars who have calculated such probabilities and argues that they are beyond reasonable possibility. Evolution is therefore presented as scientifically impossible in this framework. But intelligent beings can design things. People can take materials, arrange them, and put them into place. That is why intelligent design exists. If something is left entirely to nature, entropy comes into play. Adding billions of years does not solve the problem. Adding more time does not automatically make the process more likely to produce complex design. Consider a car left running by itself. Adding billions of years will not cause the car to become a Ferrari. It will make the car deteriorate. Science demonstrates intelligent design every day because complicated things that people observe are produced through intelligence and design. ## Historical Evidence History also provides evidence and demands Christianity to be true. People believe in the historical account of Alexander the Great based on ancient writings. But the writings used to establish his history were produced more than four hundred years apart from the events themselves, and the surviving manuscript evidence is relatively limited. Now compare that with the Bible and Jesus Christ. Regardless of whether someone likes it, the manuscript evidence for Jesus Christ is extensive. Even skeptical scholars attempt to examine the evidence concerning Jesus within a relatively short historical range. A hundred years is a long time. Two hundred years is a long time. Many things can happen during that period. But historians do not simply invent possibilities and then use those possibilities to deny historical figures. They examine historical sources and archaeology. When archaeology confirms the historical account and manuscript evidence exists within a relatively close range, that provides strong historical evidence. There may still be deficiencies, but Pastor Kim argues that there are greater deficiencies in the evidence for many other historical figures and historical books. ## The Manuscript Evidence of the New Testament Consider the manuscript evidence for the New Testament. The New Testament contains twenty-seven books. The Bible contains sixty-six books in total. Pastor Kim points to approximately five thousand Greek manuscripts. The level of agreement among these manuscripts is extraordinarily high, with estimates going above ninety percent and, in some assessments, as high as ninety-eight or ninety-nine percent. What other historical evidence has this level of manuscript support? Pastor Kim then points to Israel as another example. Study the history of Israel. Israel provides what Pastor Kim describes as common-sense, modern-day evidence connected to the Bible. How did Israel retain its language and culture through so much history? Other cultures from those periods disappeared. Israel experienced the loss of its nation, dispersion, persecution, and slaughter. Yet the Jewish people and their identity continued. Pastor Kim argues that Israel’s survival and history provide further evidence that Christianity and the Bible are true. ## Mathematical Evidence Mathematics is incredibly important when examining the Bible. Consider the prophecies concerning Jesus Christ. Imagine telling someone that he would be born in a specific city, that certain incidents would happen to him, that he would suffer a strange death, that he would be buried by a rich man even though he was born poor, and that many other specific events would happen during his lifetime. Suppose you gave the mathematical odds of ten, twenty, or thirty such events occurring to one person. What would the odds be? They would be extraordinarily small. Now consider Jesus Christ. There are many prophecies concerning Jesus Christ. There are more than two hundred prophecies associated with Him. Peter Stoner, chairman of the departments of mathematics and astronomy, calculated the probability of certain combinations of Messianic prophecies being fulfilled. Pastor Kim recalls the figure as approximately **1 in 10 to the 147th power** for a specific set of prophecies. That is an enormous number. It demonstrates how extraordinary the probability would be for such a collection of specific events to occur by chance. ## Mathematical Patterns in the Bible Pastor Kim also discusses a Harvard scholar, Ivan Panin. Panin was an atheist who examined the Hebrew Bible. He converted Hebrew letters into numbers because Hebrew letters can have numerical values. According to the discussion, when he examined the numerical patterns, he found patterns that he considered extraordinarily unlikely to occur by chance. Pastor Kim recalls the odds as being more than thirteen trillion to one for certain patterns occurring in Genesis. According to the account, this mathematical investigation contributed to Panin becoming a believer. The mathematical patterns of the Bible are therefore presented as evidence that the Bible could not simply have occurred by chance. When these mathematical statistics are combined with the Greek manuscript evidence, the argument becomes even stronger. Pastor Kim asks what other scientific or historical textbook, without modern computers, has this degree of agreement and mathematical structure. Modern textbooks regularly have third, fifth, or seventh editions. They are revised and updated. The King James Bible has remained remarkably consistent. The differences between editions of the King James Bible are primarily associated with typographical errors, spelling changes, and changes in English writing conventions. The English of 1611 is very different from modern English. Pastor Kim notes that older English can be difficult to read without studying older forms of the language. ## The Weather Channel Illustration How accurate is the Weather Channel? It is obviously not one hundred percent accurate. But suppose the Weather Channel tells you that a hurricane is coming and there is a seventy-five percent chance of it happening. Would you stay or evacuate? You would evacuate. You would not require one hundred percent certainty. Now consider the mathematical probability being discussed concerning the Bible. Pastor Kim refers to probabilities such as thirteen trillion or 10 to the 147th power. That is far beyond the level of certainty people normally require in everyday life. If someone trusts the Weather Channel enough to evacuate based on a seventy-five percent probability, then what should he think when confronted with what Pastor Kim presents as an enormous body of evidence for the Bible? # Philosophical Evidence Logic can be used to examine how human beings were created and to compare different bodies of evidence and different faiths. Which one has more evidence? Pastor Kim argues that no other religion has this many forms of evidence. No other religion, according to this argument, has been subjected to such extensive criticism and continued to withstand those criticisms. When something receives many criticisms and still stands after those criticisms are examined, that provides additional support for its claims. Philosophically, consider the origins of creation. There are two basic possibilities presented: - Something came to be naturally out of nothing, or - It was created through intelligent design. Now consider everyday life. When people see something complicated and designed, do they assume that it naturally came into existence from nothing? No. They immediately think that an intelligent person created it. Suppose you find a beautiful painting in the middle of the woods. You cannot find the artist anywhere. Would you conclude that the painting naturally appeared? No. You would assume that an artist created it even though you never saw the artist. The absence of the artist from your sight does not mean that the artist did not exist. The same principle can be applied to design. If you see simple patterns on a beach, you might reasonably believe that they occurred naturally. But if you see something complicated and intricate, such as a message written across the sand saying: **“Brandi loves Mel”**with a heart symbol between the names, you would not conclude that the message naturally appeared through random processes. You would assume that someone wrote it. You do not need to see the person writing it in order to know that intelligence was involved. Philosophically, that makes sense. ## Faith and Evidence Everyone has faith somewhere, including atheists. People believe things that they cannot directly see. They trust the Weather Channel even though they cannot see the future weather themselves. There are things people do not see, yet they believe that an intelligent person created them. When all the evidence is compared with other religions and with atheism, Pastor Kim argues that Christianity and the Bible stand out. That is why Pastor Kim concludes that the evidence supports Christianity and the truth of the Bible.
