Is Peter the rock that the church is built upon?
Answer: Jesus Christ is the rock that the church is built upon, not Peter. Catholics will use Matthew 16 to prove that Jesus said “Upon this rock, I will build my church” while he is speaking to Peter, assuming that Peter is the rock that the church is built upon.
However, when Jesus said “Upon this rock, I will build my church”, He was talking about himself.
Notice in John 2, “destroy this temple and in three days I raise it up.”
The Pharisees mistake that to be a temple out there.
But no, Jesus was talking about himself being the temple.
Jesus was talking about himself being this rock like this temple. But, people assume that it’s talking about out there the temple or Peter, who He was speaking to.
The Bible shows that Peter believes that Jesus is the rock that the church is built upon.
And even the Apostle Paul believes that Jesus is the rock that the church is built upon.
