Nevertheless, Pastor Kim emphasizes that prayer is tremendously powerful because it brings the believer before the entire Godhead. ## The Entire Godhead Is Involved in Prayer When a Christian comes before the throne of God in prayer, the entire Godhead is involved: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Pastor Kim explains that prayer is addressed to the Father. **This is why Christians commonly begin their prayers with, “Heavenly Father.”** Although people sometimes say, “Dear Jesus,” Pastor Kim notes that, from a more doctrinally precise perspective, prayer is addressed to the Father. At the same time, he emphasizes that this is not a matter for being excessively nitpicky, since believers may occasionally use different forms of address. The Father is the One to whom the prayer is addressed, the Son is the One through whom the believer comes, and the Holy Spirit is involved as the channel and helper in prayer. Thus, the whole Godhead is involved in the power of prayer. Pastor Kim then asks where the believer is in his or her prayer life. Are you close to God, or are you far away? Prayer is meant to reach into the believer’s actual spiritual condition and draw him closer to God. ## The Holy Spirit Helps Our Infirmities > ***Romans 8:26-27:**“Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.”* There are times, particularly during infirmities and confusion, when believers do not know specifically what they should pray for. In those moments, the Holy Spirit helps them. The Spirit makes intercession with groanings that cannot be uttered. Pastor Kim then points out that the passage goes on to speak about the One who searches the hearts and knows the mind of the Spirit. He identifies Jesus Christ as the ultimate intercessor for the saints, emphasizing that Christ makes intercession according to the will of God. The picture, therefore, is of the **filling of the Holy Spirit within the believer, Christ interceding on the believer’s behalf, and the Father receiving and answering according to His will.** ## The Cross Is the Bridge Between Earth and Heaven The Holy Spirit is within the believer, while Christ becomes the ultimate Intercessor on the believer’s behalf because of His finished work at Calvary. Pastor Kim describes the cross as the bridge between earth and heaven. The believer could not approach God on the basis of human merit, but because of the precious cross of Christ, there is now access to God. He recalls a song about the cross being the bridge from earth to heaven and refers to the truth expressed in its words: the cross itself speaks of God’s love. Christ took three nails, two pieces of wood and endured the cross, and that cross demonstrated God’s love in a way that nothing else could. Thus, prayer is not merely a human voice speaking toward heaven. The entire work of God is involved: the Holy Spirit helps the believer, Christ intercedes, and the Father answers according to His will. ## The Holy Spirit Corrects Our Prayers Pastor Kim gives what he describes as two great promises concerning prayer. The first is that **believers often pray inaccurately.** They do not always know how to pray correctly, and they do not always understand what they truly need. Yet God has provided a wonderful provision through the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit understands what the believer is truly feeling and knows what the believer truly needs. Christ then takes the imperfect prayer request and brings it before the Father according to God’s will. This is one of the great blessings of Romans 8:26-27. There are times when Christians simply do not know how to pray. At the same time, Pastor Kim points out that there is something sad about this. Christians should grow to the point where they know how to pray to the Father. The reason many believers do not pray correctly is that they are so dominated by the flesh. ## 1) The Filling of the Holy Spirit Pastor Kim then asks what happens when the flesh is crossed out. The answer is found in the crucified life with Christ. Romans 6 teaches the believer to regard the old life as crucified and to yield instead to the Holy Spirit. > ***Romans 6:6:**“Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.”* When the believer lives according to the crucified life, the flesh is no longer allowed to dominate. Instead, the believer yields to the Holy Spirit. As the believer yields to the Spirit, he becomes increasingly filled with the Spirit. Pastor Kim asks the listener to imagine what happens when someone is filled with the Spirit and spiritual power is flowing through his life. If the Holy Spirit is working powerfully within the believer, prayer becomes increasingly powerful because the believer is no longer operating merely according to the flesh. He gave a testimony where a Bible believing preacher who was known to be a prayer warrior, prayed to God because money was stolen from the collection. Everyone else said that the money is going to return. The next day, they got the money back. The question, therefore, is personal: **Are you filled with the Spirit, or are you filled with the flesh?** ## 2) Language of Prayer is in His Word Christ is interceding on behalf of believers, so Christians need to know what He considers to be the correct prayer. How do believers discover the correct prayer? They find the correct prayer through **His Word.** John identifies Christ as the Word: > ***John 1:1:**“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”* > **John 15:7:**“If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.” If believers want powerful, answered prayer, they need to know the Book—the Word of God. This is why many people who have devoted themselves deeply to prayer have made it a practice to read the Bible before praying. Pastor Kim specifically mentions George Müller, who made a habit of**reading the Bible first and then praying.** The reason is that when the believer prays after reading God’s Word, his language of prayer becomes increasingly shaped by the language of Scripture. ### Knowing the Word of God Pastor Kim uses the illustration of a father and child. A father naturally recognizes and appreciates communication from a child who knows him well—someone who understands his personality, language, and way of communicating. In the same way, when a believer becomes deeply acquainted with God through His Word, the believer’s prayer begins to reflect God’s own language. If a Christian is in sync with God through Scripture and then prays according to the language and principles of God’s Word, prayer can move to another level. This is why believers must know the Book. Pastor Kim stresses that **doctrine is therefore extremely important in the Christian life.** A relationship with Jesus should be the most important thing in a Christian’s life, but the believer cannot have the right relationship if he begins with wrong doctrine. The Bible says: > ***2 Timothy 3:16:**“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:”* Doctrine is listed first. Pastor Kim argues that this is why believers should not be dismissive of doctrine or complain that a pastor is too particular about it. If someone’s prayer life is weak, one reason may be that the person’s doctrine is not right. He emphasizes that doctrine is not merely about obscure or unusual subjects. It concerns everything taught in the Word of God, whether the subject is love, prophecy, the Antichrist, or any other biblical teaching. The central issue is simply this: **What does God’s Word say?** ### The Importance of a Bible-Believing Church Pastor Kim explains that this is also why it is important for a Christian to attend the right church. If a person attends a church where the teaching is wrong and then spends hours praying without understanding God’s Word correctly, there is a serious problem. Therefore, Christians should be Bible believers, should seek to understand doctrine correctly, and should attend a Bible-believing church. At the same time, Pastor Kim distinguishes between believing correct doctrine and maintaining relationships with fellow believers. Christians do not need to fight with one another over every single detail. Getting along with brethren is a separate matter from one’s responsibility to believe what the Bible teaches. The Christian should seek to understand right doctrine correctly while also maintaining proper relationships with other believers. ### Read the Bible Before You Pray Pastor Kim asks how well believers know the Bible and whether they read Scripture before they pray. Reading the Bible before prayer can change the entire prayer time because God may reveal something from His Word that the believer can then use in prayer. > ***Romans 8:27:**“And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he **maketh intercession** for the saints **according to the will of God.**”* Ultimately, powerful prayer is connected with knowing the will of the Father. ## 3) Seek What Glorifies God Pastor Kim emphasizes that the believer should seek the Father’s will completely. This means being filled with the Holy Spirit, knowing the Word of Christ, studying and memorizing Scripture, believing it, researching it, and continually reading the Word of God. Then the believer should seek the Father’s will 100%. One way to know whether a prayer is aligned with God’s will is to ask whether what is being requested will glorify God. When believers pray for something they know will glorify God and please Him, it changes the way they pray. Pastor Kim gives the example of praying for a vacation. At first, a person might pray simply for a vacation so that he can get away and relax. That may appear to be a fleshly request. But the prayer can be reframed around God’s glory: “Lord, please give me a vacation because this is Your temple, and I do not want to wear out Your temple. I want to keep using this temple to glorify You and do more things at church, but I cannot do that if all my energy is gone.” The focus changes from personal pleasure to being refreshed so that the believer can continue serving and glorifying God. When the believer seeks God’s glory, the prayer may be much more closely aligned with God’s will. ### Knowing the Deep Desires of God Pastor Kim then discusses the example of Moses changing God’s mind and the idea of seeking what glorifies God. He argues that a believer can come to know God’s will so deeply that he can bring requests before God with an understanding of God’s deep innermost desires. He compares this to a close relationship between husband and wife. When a husband knows his wife intimately, he begins to understand what makes her happy and what she desires, even without everything having to be explicitly explained. In the same way, Christians should become so intimate with God through His Word and the Holy Spirit that they know what pleases Him. The goal is not simply to get God to do what the believer wants. Rather, the believer should come to understand God’s deepest desires and seek what He wants. ## The Three Persons of the Godhead at Work Pastor Kim brings the teaching back to the involvement of the entire Godhead. If the **believer is filled with the Holy Spirit, is deeply grounded in the Word of Christ, and seeks the Father’s will,** then all three Persons of the Godhead are involved in the believer’s prayer life. The Word of God was used to bring creation into existence. God’s Word carries divine authority and power. When the believer lives according to God’s Word and seeks His will, prayer is no longer merely an expression of human desire. It becomes increasingly aligned with the work and purposes of God. Pastor Kim concludes by asking who could conquer, defeat, or overcome such a prayer life. The answer is no one, because God is in it.
