[Hosea 7](/study/hosea/7) [Hosea 9](/study/hosea/9) ## Commentary To verse 1 Verse [Hosea 8:1](/kjv/hosea/8/1). ***Set the trumpet to thy mouth*** — Sound another alarm. Let them know that an enemy is fast approaching. ***As an eagle against the house of the Lord*** — of this be a prophecy against *Judah*, as some have supposed, then by the *eagle* Nebuchadnezzar is meant, who is often compared to this king of birds. See [Ezekiel 17:3](/kjv/ezekiel/17/3); [Jeremiah 48:40](/kjv/jeremiah/48/40); [Jeremiah 49:22](/kjv/jeremiah/49/22); [Daniel 7:4](/kjv/daniel/7/4). But if the prophecy be against *Israel*, which is the most likely, then *Shalmaneser*, king of Assyria, is intended, who, for his rapidity, avarice, rapacity, and strength, is fitly compared to this royal bird. He is represented here as *hovering over the house* *of God*, as the eagle does over the prey which he has just espied, and on which he is immediately to pounce. ```json {"@context":"https://schema.org","@graph":[{"@type":"WebSite","@id":"https://realbiblebelievers.com/#website","url":"https://realbiblebelievers.com","name":"Real Bible Believers","description":"RBB","publisher":{"@id":"https://realbiblebelievers.com/#/schema/person/e966585dde703268e7f6ae890ea98509"},"potentialAction":[{"@type":"SearchAction","target":"https://realbiblebelievers.com/search?q={search_term_string}","query-input":"required name=search_term_string"}],"inLanguage":"en-US"},{"@type":"ImageObject","@id":"https://realbiblebelievers.com/study/clarkes-commentary/hosea/8#primaryimage","inLanguage":"en-US","url":"https://realbiblebelievers.com/_app/immutable/assets/missing.C7wGMEZ6.jpg","contentUrl":"https://realbiblebelievers.com/_app/immutable/assets/missing.C7wGMEZ6.jpg","width":672,"height":448,"caption":"Real Bible Believers"},{"@type":"WebPage","@id":"https://realbiblebelievers.com/study/clarkes-commentary/hosea/8#webpage","url":"https://realbiblebelievers.com/study/clarkes-commentary/hosea/8","name":"Hosea 8 - Study King James Bible with clarkes commentary","isPartOf":{"@id":"https://realbiblebelievers.com/#website"},"primaryImageOfPage":{"@id":"https://realbiblebelievers.com/study/clarkes-commentary/hosea/8#primaryimage"},"author":{"@id":"https://realbiblebelievers.com/#/schema/person/e966585dde703268e7f6ae890ea98509"},"description":"Read Hosea 8 with clarkes commentary commentary. 1 Set the trumpet to thy mouth.
