Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith; 14 Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth. 15 Unto the pure all things *are* pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving *is* nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled. 16 They profess that they know God; but in works they deny *him*, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate. [2 Timothy 4](/study/2-timothy/4) [Titus 2](/study/titus/2) ## Commentary To verse 1 **Paul, a servant of God;**that is, in the work of the ministry. **And an apostle of Jesus Christ;**who glory in this as my greatest honour and dignity, that I was one immediately sent by Jesus Christ to preach the gospel. **According to the faith of God's elect;**κατα πιστιν according to what the elect, or chosen of God from the beginning of the world, have believed; so as it is no new doctrine which I bring: or else κατα here should be translated for, denoting the final cause, as some judge it signifieth, [2 Timothy 1:1](/kjv/2-timothy/1/1), and in [Titus 1:9](/kjv/titus/1/9) of this chapter; then the sense is, that he was sent to be an instrument to beget faith in such as God had chosen unto life. [Acts 26:18](/kjv/acts/26/18), for those only *ordained to eternal life* believe, [Acts 13:48](/kjv/acts/13/48), and Paul was sent to be a helper of their faith.
