Revelation 10:1-2 And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud: and a rainbow was upon his head, and his face was as it were the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire: And he had in his hand a little book open: and he set his right foot upon the sea, and his left foot on the earth,
The Mighty Angel’s Identity
‘And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven‘
Recall that before this strong angel has descended, other angels have been blowing the 7 trumpets in previous Revelation verses.
‘clothed with a cloud: and a rainbow was upon his head‘
This mighty angel’s appearance is described as being clothed with a cloud and with a rainbow on his head. That’s a bit strange since he was clothed with cloud.
‘and his face was as it were the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire:‘
The verse goes on to describe the physical attributes of this angel: bright face like the sun and feet like pillars of fire.
The description of the mighty angel is similar when compared to the appearance of Jesus, thus, we have an idea of the identity of this particular angel. The following verses are descriptions of Jesus which match the descriptions of the mighty angel:
- Revelation 1:7 Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.
- Revelation 1:15 And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters.
- Revelation 1:16 And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength.
- Revelation 4:3 And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald.
Some believers do not believe that the mighty angel and Jesus could be one and the same because Jesus is not an angel. However, if we look at the Old Testament where it mentions the Angel of the Lord (particularly when Jacob was fighting the angel of the Lord that had the face of God), we realize that this description was referring to God Himself, so it is possible that the mighty angel and Jesus are the same. This is a good verse to show that Jesus is God.
If this is the case, then it would mean that Jesus had another state before his incarnate state of a man (when he came to earth as a human), which was as the angel of the Lord in his pre-incarnate state. Genesis 32 lets us know that God came down in human form before Jesus.
‘And he had in his hand a little book open:‘
Jesus has a little book in his hand open. What is this book?
‘and he set his right foot upon the sea, and his left foot on the earth,‘
It also mentions that his right foot is on the sea and the left foot is on land. Why is that? To identify the location where Jesus is standing, we need to go to Revelation 13.
Revelation 13:1 And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.
This verse mentions from where the Antichrist will emerge from (location wise) and by comparing this verse with Daniel 11 (which is the division of Alexander the Great’s kingdom into 4 parts) we learn the identities of the sea and land where Jesus stands on.
Daniel 11:4 And when he shall stand up, his kingdom shall be broken, and shall be divided toward the four winds of heaven; and not to his posterity, nor according to his dominion which he ruled: for his kingdom shall be plucked up, even for others beside those.
His kingdom splits into 4 parts. Historically speaking, during the division of Alexander the Great’s kingdom, the event that matches up the closest to this division is the conflict between Syria and Egypt. This coupled with the fact the book of Revelation focuses on the geographical location of Israel is how the Mediterranean Sea is identified as the sea in verse 2.
Daniel 11:14-15 And in those times there shall many stand up against the king of the south: also the robbers of thy people shall exalt themselves to establish the vision; but they shall fall. So the king of the north shall come, and cast up a mount, and take the most fenced cities: and the arms of the south shall not withstand, neither his chosen people, neither shall there be any strength to withstand.
There was a conflict between the north (Syria) and south king (Egypt).
Daniel 11: 21-22 And in his estate shall stand up a vile person, to whom they shall not give the honour of the kingdom: but he shall come in peaceably, and obtain the kingdom by flatteries. And with the arms of a flood shall they be overflown from before him, and shall be broken; yea, also the prince of the covenant.
Someone is going to take over the position of the king of the north (Syria) but this shall happen thousands of years later. This person is the Antichrist.
We know that the Antichrist is a Syrian because Isaiah 11 calls the Antichrist an Assyrian. And also because he’s the king of the north (Syria). But for the Jewish part, this is why:
Daniel 11:37 Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers, nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all.
It says here that he does not regard the God of his fathers. At the time of writing this scripture, there were no Christians, so it is impossible for the Antichrist to be Christian. The terms “forefathers” and “our fathers” are associated with the Jewish people, so this is where the idea that the Antichrist is of Jewish descent comes from.
Satanic forces always wanted that piece of land – the Mediterranean sea, because that’s God’s property. The Antichrist will take over this land soon.
