Islam is a monotheistic religion founded in the 7th century CE by the Prophet Muhammad in what is today Saudi Arabia. Followers of Islam, known as Muslims, believe in the teachings of the Quran, considered the literal word of God as revealed to Muhammad. Islam emphasizes submission to the will of Allah (God) and follows the Five Pillars: Shahada (faith), Salat (prayer), Zakat (charity), Sawm (fasting during Ramadan), and Hajj (pilgrimage to Mecca).
