Revelation 13:18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.

Bible numerics and 666

In Bible numerics, the number 6 is represented as the number of man.

Six hundred threescore and six.

Six hundred, threescore means sixty and six.

‘Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast:’

Notice the verse states that if someone has understanding they will know this number and its significance. Many people often discredit Bible numerics as a legitimate way God uses to reveal Scripture. They are in fact legitimate and are a symbol of wisdom (as revealed in this verse). This is because men tend to force the numbers to have their intended significance instead of what God wants them to mean.

Going back to the verse we see that scripturally, the number 6 is man’s number. When analyzing Bible numerics, we have to note certain patterns and take the number of verses into consideration if we want to interpret these numerics as accurately as possible. It also helps to know that other people share a person’s findings as this makes it more clear that it is revealed by the Holy Spirit and is not just man’s interpretation.

An interesting thing to note about the number 666 is that it appears in 2 passages of the Bible, those of which are the following.

2 Chronicles 9:13 Now the weight of gold that came to Solomon in one year was six hundred and threescore and six talents of gold;

The number of Solomon’s gold in weight matches perfectly to the number of the beast mentioned in Revelation 13:18. Recall that at this time Solomon was sinning by having multiple wives from various nations and horses from Egypt (both of which God disapproved of).

Ezra 2:13 The children of Adonikam, six hundred sixty and six.

In this verse, 666 is tied to Adonikam or the lord of rebellion.

John 6:66 From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.

Disciples turn from Jesus and Judas Iscariot is mentioned which Jesus called a devil. The verse was John 6:66.

The 24 elders and the 144,000

Revelation 14:1-3 And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with him an hundred forty and four thousand, having his Father’s name written in their foreheads. And I heard a voice from heaven, as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder: and I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps: And they sung as it were a new song before the throne, and before the four beasts, and the elders: and no man could learn that song but the hundred and forty and four thousand, which were redeemed from the earth.

And I looked, and, lo

Lo and behold.

a Lamb stood on the mount Sion

Notice that Lamb is capitalized, meaning that he is seeing Jesus (John 1, Revelation 5 and 6). The verse goes on to reveal where Jesus is standing, which is not the earthly mount Zion but the one in heaven.

and with him an hundred forty and four thousand,

The verse later states that there are 144,000 with him atop mount Zion. Recall these same 144,000 that were mentioned in Revelation 7, which are an equal amount of people from the 12 tribes of the nation of Israel.

having his Father’s name written in their foreheads.

Revelation 7 also mentions that these people are sealed. This coincides with the latter part of verse 1, which states that the 144,000 had the name of God on their foreheads. Given that God seals His people with His name on their foreheads and that Satan tries to imitate God in everything He does, it is possible that Satan will try to do the same.

Concerning the name of blasphemy, it is very possible that the number 666 is tied to this name. As discussed in previous Revelation 13 commentaries, there is a high possibility that the Pope is the Antichrist and one of the evidence is found in the hat that he wears. Notice that the title ‘vicarius filii dei’, when translated into roman numerals, adds up to 666.

Going back to the 144,000, Ezekiel 3 mentions that the Jews are sealed with God’s (Father’s) mark on their forehead.

Ezekiel 9:3-4 And the glory of the God of Israel was gone up from the cherub, whereupon he was, to the threshold of the house. And he called to the man clothed with linen, which had the writer’s inkhorn by his side; And the Lord said unto him, Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and set a mark upon the foreheads of the men that sigh and that cry for all the abominations that be done in the midst thereof.

and set a mark upon the foreheads of the men that sigh and that cry for all the abominations

Marks are used to spare people from God’s wrath because they do not rejoice in the abominations happening in the city of Jerusalem, which is later true when the abomination of desolation appears. A similar thing happens in Revelation 9, where God protects His people who were crying for the abominations happening at Jerusalem from destruction by marking them with His name while those with the mark of the beast are targeted for judgment.

‘And I heard a voice from heaven, as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder:’

God’s voice speaking from heaven which sounds like many waters and thunders.

I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps: And they sung as it were a new song before the throne,

Who are the harpers? Verse 3 reveals that these harpers sing a new song in front of the 24 elders, the 4 cherubims, and God’s throne. By the song that they are singing, the harpers’ identity is revealed to be the 144,000. The fact that they are singing in front of the elders means that the 144,000 and the 24 elders are different people.

The identity of the 24 elders is the Christian Church, (discussed in another study) which sings a different song than the one mentioned in this verse, belonging to the tribulation saints. Revelation 5 states that the 24 elders have their own song that glorifies God for releasing the tribulation while they escape the tribulation and for being redeemed by Jesus’ blood. On the other hand, the tribulation Saints sing about coming out of the tribulation.

and no man could learn that song but the hundred and forty and four thousand, which were redeemed from the earth.

No one can understand their song, not even us saved Christians. The difference between these two songs serves as proof that the Christian Church does not go through tribulation.

Revelation 5:8-9 And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints. And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;

The verse ends by stating that these Jews were redeemed from the earth by escaping great tribulation (from the antichrist system) as opposed to Christians who were redeemed by the blood. By comparing this to Revelation 15 where the song of Moses is sung, it alludes to those 144,000 being distinctly from Jewish backgrounds, unlike Christians that come from various nations and ethnicities.

Revelation 15:3 And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and marvellous are thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are thy ways, thou King of saints
