Seven Symbols Used to Illustrate the Word of God

  1. A Sword
The Bible is a pointed word that convicts the hearer.

Hebrews 4:12: “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

  2. A Hammer
The Bible is powerful and breaks the resistance of the hearer.

Jeremiah 23:29: “Is not my word like as a fire? saith the LORD; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces?”

  3. A Seed
The Bible is a living word, regenerating the hearer.

1 Peter 1:23: “Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.”

  4. A Mirror
The Bible is a faithful reflection revealing the individual to himself.

James 1:22-25:But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.”

  5. A Fire
The Bible is a burning word that consumes the dross in the hearer.

Jeremiah 23:29: “Is not my word like as a fire? saith the LORD; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces?”
Jeremiah 20:9: “Then I said, I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name. But his word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary with forbearing, and I could not stay.”

  6. A Lamp
The Bible is an illuminating word, guiding the believer day by day.

Psalm 119:105: “NUN. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

  7. Food
    Like apples

Proverbs 25:11: “A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver.”

    Like milk

1 Peter 2:2: “As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:”

    Like meat

1 Corinthians 3:2: “I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.”

    Like bread

Matthew 4:4: “But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”

    Like honey

Psalm 19:10: “More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.”

Hebrews 5:12-14: “For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.”

This list contains the complete diet that any man in the world could live off for 80 years.

All these references/symbols give men complete ‘survival equipment’. When they have the word of God, they have complete equipment for survival to last a lifetime in just one Book. The word of God convicts, breaks, regenerates, reveals, cleans, sanctifies, consumes, illuminates, and nourishes the individual.

Seven Reasons for Preaching the Word of God

Jesus faced the multitude and made a tremendous decision, which was to preach the word of God.

Mark 2:2: “And straightway many were gathered together, insomuch that there was no room to receive them, no, not so much as about the door: and he preached the word unto them.”

Men insist on preaching the Bible because it endures through time and eternity.

Isaiah 40:8: “The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.”

Conviction of sin comes through the preaching of the word of God.
In Peter’s Pentecost sermon, 9 verses out of 23 are quotations from the Old Testament.

Acts 2:14-37: “But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words: For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day. But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy: And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke: The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come: And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know: Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain: Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it. For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved: Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope: Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. Thou hast made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance. Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day. Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne; He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption. This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses. Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear. For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, Until I make thy foes thy footstool. Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ. Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?”

Faith comes by hearing the word of God.

Romans 10:17: “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”

Cleansing comes from the word of God.

2 Corinthians 7:1: “Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.”

Assurance comes from the word of God.

1 John 5:13: “These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.”

Comfort comes from the word of God.

1 Thessalonians 4:18: “Wherefore comfort one another with these words.”

Truth comes from the word of God.

Acts 17:11: “These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.”

The new birth comes from the word of God.

1 Peter 1:23: “Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.”

The above are all reasons why the Bible makes great sharing materials!

Seven Reasons Why Some Do Not Read the Word of God

  1. Ignorant of its truth, formation, and the information available in these historical books
  2. Eating or feeding on ashes
    Feeding on politics, comics, etc.

Isaiah 44:20: “He feedeth on ashes: a deceived heart hath turned him aside, that he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, Is there not a lie in my right hand?”

  3. Sickness – A sin-sick soul has no appetite for the word of God.
  4. Lunching between meals
Living in the light, frivolous non-essentials of life.
  5. The Book lacks flavor for some.
Business, sports, and education are their primary interests.
  6. The Book is too sweet.
Some think that the Bible is only for the sick, aged, and dying. It’s too sweet and sentimental (too many heart-touching stories) for practical, healthy people.

Revelation 10:8-10:And the voice which I heard from heaven spake unto me again, and said, Go and take the little book which is open in the hand of the angel which standeth upon the sea and upon the earth. And I went unto the angel, and said unto him, Give me the little book. And he said unto me, Take it, and eat it up; and it shall make thy belly bitter, but it shall be in thy mouth sweet as honey. And I took the little book out of the angel’s hand, and ate it up; and it was in my mouth sweet as honey: and as soon as I had eaten it, my belly was bitter.”

  7. The Book is too bitter.
The truths of judgment, hell, and sin are too bitter. Some people are afraid to read the Bible.

Revelation 10:8-10: “And the voice which I heard from heaven spake unto me again, and said, Go and take the little book which is open in the hand of the angel which standeth upon the sea and upon the earth.
Jeremiah 15:16: “Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O LORD God of hosts.”
