him with sackcloth

and sat

And he caused it to be proclaimed

וַיַּזְעֵ֗ק

and published

לֵאמֹ֑ר

through Nineveh

בְּנִֽינְוֵ֔ה

by the decree

of the king

הַמֶּ֛לֶךְ

and his nobles

וּגְדֹלָ֖יו

לֵאמֹ֑ר

Let neither man

הָאָדָ֨ם

nor beast

וְהַבְּהֵמָ֜ה

herd

הַבָּקָ֣ר

nor flock

וְהַצֹּ֗אן

 

אַֽל

taste

יִטְעֲמוּ֙

any thing

מְא֔וּמָה

 

אַ֨ל

let them not feed

יִרְע֔וּ

water

וּמַ֖יִם

 

אַל

nor drink

יִשְׁתּֽוּ׃

be covered

וְיִתְכַּסּ֣וּ

with sackcloth

שַׂקִּ֗ים

But let man

הָֽאָדָם֙

and beast

וְהַבְּהֵמָ֔ה

and cry

וְיִקְרְא֥וּ

 

אֶל

unto God

אֱלֹהִ֖ים

mightily

בְּחָזְקָ֑ה

yea let them turn

וְיָשֻׁ֗בוּ

every one

אִ֚ישׁ

way

מִדַּרְכּ֣וֹ

from his evil

הָֽרָעָ֔ה

 

וּמִן

and from the violence

הֶחָמָ֖ס

 

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

that is in their hands

בְּכַפֵּיהֶֽם׃

 

מִֽי

Who can tell

יוֹדֵ֣עַ

and turn away

וְשָׁ֛ב

and repent

וְנִחַ֖ם

if God

הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים

and turn away

וְשָׁ֛ב

from his fierce

מֵחֲר֥וֹן

anger

אַפּ֖וֹ

 

וְלֹ֥א

that we perish

נֹאבֵֽד׃

saw

וַיַּ֤רְא

And God

הָאֱלֹהִ֗ים

their works

מַ֣עֲשֵׂיהֶ֔ם

 

כִּי

that they turned

שָׁ֖בוּ

way

מִדַּרְכָּ֣ם

from their evil

הָרָעָ֛ה

repented

וַיִּנָּ֣חֶם

הָאֱלֹהִ֗ים
