And she conceived

וַתַּ֖הַר

and bare

וַתֵּ֣לֶד

a son

בֵּ֑ן

and he called

וַיִּקְרָ֥א

 

אֶת

his name

שְׁמ֖וֹ

Er

עֵֽר׃

And she conceived

וַתַּ֥הַר

 

ע֖וֹד

again and bare

וַתֵּ֣לֶד

a son

בֵּ֑ן

and she called

וַתִּקְרָ֥א

Onan

אוֹנָֽן׃

And she yet again conceived

was Tamar

תָּמָֽר׃

 

וַיְהִ֗י

And Er

עֵ֚ר

firstborn

בְּכ֣וֹר

Judah's

יְהוּדָ֔ה

was wicked

רַ֖ע

in the sight

בְּעֵינֵ֣י

and the LORD

יְהוָֽה׃

slew

וַיְמִתֵ֖הוּ

and the LORD

יְהוָֽה׃

said

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר

And Judah

יְהוּדָה֙

unto Onan

לְאוֹנָ֔ן

Go in

בֹּ֛א

 

אֶל

wife

אֵ֥שֶׁת

to thy brother

לְאָחִֽיךָ׃

and marry

וְיַבֵּ֣ם

 

אֹתָ֑הּ

her and raise up

וְהָקֵ֥ם

seed

זֶ֖רַע

to thy brother

לְאָחִֽיךָ׃

knew

וַיֵּ֣דַע

And Onan

אוֹנָ֔ן

to Timnath

תִמְנָ֖תָה

צֹאנֽוֹ׃

And she put

וַתָּסַר֩

garments

בִּגְדֵ֨י

her widow's

אַלְמְנוּתָ֜הּ

 

מֵֽעָלֶ֗יהָ

from her and covered her

וַתְּכַ֤ס

with a vail

בַּצָּעִיף֙

and wrapped herself

וַתִּתְעַלָּ֔ף

and sat in

וַתֵּ֙שֶׁב֙

בְּפֶ֣תַח

because she had covered

כִסְּתָ֖ה

her face

פָּנֶֽיהָ׃

And he turned

וַיֵּ֨ט

 

אֵלֶ֜יהָ

 

אֶל

unto her by the way

הַדֶּ֗רֶךְ

And she said

וַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙

Go to

הָֽבָה

 

נָּא֙

I pray thee let me come in

תָב֖וֹא

 

אֵלַ֔יִךְ

לֹ֣א

unto thee (for he knew

not that she was his daughter in law

And she said

אֵלָֽי׃

And he said

אָֽנֹכִ֛י

הַצֹּ֑אן

And he said

וַתֹּ֕אמֶר

שָׁלְחֶֽךָ׃

And he said

וַתֹּ֗אמֶר

הָֽעֵרָבוֹן֮

And he gave

לָּךְ֒

וַתֹּ֗אמֶר

Thy signet

חֹתָֽמְךָ֙

and thy bracelets

וּפְתִילֶ֔ךָ

and thy staff

וּמַטְּךָ֖

What

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

that is in thine hand

בְּיָדֶ֑ךָ

And he gave

וַיִּתֶּן

 

לָּ֛הּ

it her and came in

וַיָּבֹ֥א

 

אֵלֶ֖יהָ

unto her and she conceived

וַתַּ֥הַר

 

לֽוֹ׃

And she arose

וַתָּ֣קָם

הַדָּ֑רֶךְ

And they said

וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ

הָיְתָ֥ה

There was no harlot

קְדֵשָֽׁה׃

And he returned

וַיָּ֙שָׁב֙

 

אֶל

to Judah

יְהוּדָ֔ה

and said

אָֽמְר֔וּ

I cannot

לֹֽא

find

מְצָאתִ֑יהָ

 

וְגַ֨ם

 

אַנְשֵׁ֤י

of the place

הַמָּקוֹם֙

and said

אָֽמְר֔וּ

I cannot

לֹֽא

 

הָיְתָ֥ה

 

בָזֶ֖ה

that there was no harlot

קְדֵשָֽׁה׃

said

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר

And Judah

יְהוּדָה֙

Let her take

תִּֽקַּֽח

 

לָ֔הּ

 

פֶּ֖ן

 

נִֽהְיֶ֣ה

it to her lest we be shamed

לָב֑וּז

 

הִנֵּ֤ה

behold I sent

שָׁלַ֙חְתִּי֙

this kid

הַגְּדִ֣י

 

הַזֶּ֔ה

 

וְאַתָּ֖ה

 

לֹ֥א

and thou hast not found

מְצָאתָֽהּ׃

 

וַיְהִ֣י׀

And it came to pass about three

כְּמִשְׁלֹ֣שׁ

months

חֳדָשִׁ֗ים

after that it was told

וַיֻּגַּ֨ד

And Judah

יְהוּדָ֔ה

said

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר

hath played the harlot

זָֽנְתָה֙

Tamar

תָּמָ֣ר

thy daughter in law

כַּלָּתֶ֔ךָ

 

וְגַ֛ם

 

הִנֵּ֥ה

and also behold she is with child

הָרָ֖ה

by whoredom

לִזְנוּנִ֑ים

said

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר

And Judah

יְהוּדָ֔ה

Bring her forth

הֽוֹצִיא֖וּהָ

and let her be burnt

וְתִשָּׂרֵֽף׃

 

הִ֣וא

When she was brought forth

מוּצֵ֗את

 

וְהִ֨יא

she sent

שָֽׁלְחָ֤ה

 

אֶל

to her father in law

חָמִ֙יהָ֙

and she said

וַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙

 

לְאִישׁ֙

 

אֲשֶׁר

 

אֵ֣לֶּה

 

לּ֔וֹ

 

אָֽנֹכִ֖י

whose these are am I with child

הָרָ֑ה

and she said

וַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙

Discern

הַכֶּר

 

נָ֔א

 

לְמִ֞י

I pray thee whose are these the signet

הַחֹתֶ֧מֶת

and bracelets

וְהַפְּתִילִ֛ים

and staff

וְהַמַּטֶּ֖ה

 

הָאֵֽלֶּה׃

acknowledged

וַיַּכֵּ֣ר

And Judah

יְהוּדָ֗ה

them and said

וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙

She hath been more righteous

צָֽדְקָ֣ה

 

מִמֶּ֔נִּי

 

כִּֽי

 

עַל

 

כֵּ֥ן

than I because that I gave

נְתַתִּ֖יהָ

her not to Shelah

לְשֵׁלָ֣ה

my son

בְנִ֑י

And he knew her

לְדַעְתָּֽה׃

 

וַיְהִ֖י

And it came to pass in the time

בְּעֵ֣ת

of her travail

לִדְתָּ֑הּ

 

וְהִנֵּ֥ה

that behold twins

תְאוֹמִ֖ים

were in her womb

בְּבִטְנָֽהּ׃

 

וַיְהִ֥י

And it came to pass when she travailed

הַמְיַלֶּ֗דֶת

that the one put out

וַיִּתֶּן

his hand

יָד֤וֹ

took

וַתִּקַּ֣ח

And it came to pass when she travailed

הַמְיַלֶּ֗דֶת

and bound

וַתִּקְשֹׁ֨ר

 

עַל

his hand

יָד֤וֹ

a scarlet thread

שָׁנִי֙

saying

לֵאמֹ֔ר

 

זֶ֖ה

This came out

And it came to pass as he drew back

כְּמֵשִׁ֣יב

and she said

וַתֹּ֕אמֶר

How hast thou broken forth

פָּרַ֖צְתָּ

 

עָלֶ֣יךָ

this breach

וַיִּקְרָ֥א

be upon thee therefore his name

שְׁמ֖וֹ
