1
Man
אָ֭דָם
that is born
יְל֣וּד
of a woman
אִשָּׁ֑ה
is of few
קְצַ֥ר
days
יָ֝מִ֗ים
and full
וּֽשְׂבַֽע
of trouble
רֹֽגֶז׃
2
like a flower
כְּצִ֣יץ
He cometh forth
יָ֭צָא
and is cut down
וַיִּמָּ֑ל
he fleeth
וַיִּבְרַ֥ח
also as a shadow
כַּ֝צֵּ֗ל

וְלֹ֣א
and continueth
יַעֲמֽוֹד׃
3

אַף

עַל
upon such an one
זֶ֭ה
And dost thou open
פָּקַ֣חְתָּ
thine eyes
עֵינֶ֑ךָ

וְאֹ֘תִ֤י
and bringest
תָבִ֖יא
me into judgment
בְמִשְׁפָּ֣ט

עִמָּֽךְ׃
4

מִֽי
Who can bring
יִתֵּ֣ן
a clean
טָ֭הוֹר
thing out of an unclean
מִטָּמֵ֗א

לֹ֣א
not one
אֶחָֽד׃
5
Seeing
אִ֥ם
are determined
חֲרוּצִ֨ים׀
his days
יָמָ֗יו
the number
מִֽסְפַּר
of his months
חֳדָשָׁ֥יו

אִתָּ֑ךְ
his bounds
חֻקָּ֥ו
are with thee thou hast appointed
עָ֝שִׂ֗יתָ

וְלֹ֣א
that he cannot pass
יַעֲבֹֽר׃
6
Turn
שְׁעֵ֣ה

מֵעָלָ֣יו
from him that he may rest
וְיֶחְדָּ֑ל

עַד
till he shall accomplish
יִ֝רְצֶ֗ה
as an hireling
כְּשָׂכִ֥יר
his day
יוֹמֽוֹ׃
7

כִּ֤י
For there is
יֵ֥שׁ
of a tree
לָעֵ֗ץ
hope
תִּ֫קְוָ֥ה

אִֽם
if it be cut down
יִ֭כָּרֵת

וְע֣וֹד
that it will sprout again
יַחֲלִ֑יף
and that the tender branch
וְ֝יֹֽנַקְתּ֗וֹ

לֹ֣א
thereof will not cease
תֶחְדָּֽל׃
8

אִם
thereof wax old
יַזְקִ֣ין
in the earth
בָּאָ֣רֶץ
Though the root
שָׁרְשׁ֑וֹ
in the ground
וּ֝בֶעָפָ֗ר
thereof die
יָמ֥וּת
and the stock
גִּזְעֽוֹ׃
9
Yet through the scent
מֵרֵ֣יחַ
of water
מַ֣יִם
it will bud
יַפְרִ֑חַ
and bring forth
וְעָשָׂ֖ה
boughs
קָצִ֣יר

כְּמוֹ
like a plant
נָֽטַע׃
10
But man
וְגֶ֣בֶר
dieth
יָ֭מוּת
and wasteth away
וַֽיֶּחֱלָ֑שׁ
giveth up the ghost
וַיִּגְוַ֖ע
yea man
אָדָ֣ם

וְאַיּֽוֹ׃
11
fail
אָֽזְלוּ
As the waters
מַ֭יִם

מִנִּי
from the sea
יָ֑ם
and the flood
וְ֝נָהָ֗ר
decayeth
יֶחֱרַ֥ב
and drieth up
וְיָבֵֽשׁ׃
12
So man
וְאִ֥ישׁ
lieth down
שָׁכַ֗ב

וְֽלֹא
and riseth
יָ֫ק֥וּם

עַד
be no more
בִּלְתִּ֣י
not till the heavens
שָׁ֭מַיִם

לֹ֣א
they shall not awake
יָקִ֑יצוּ

וְלֹֽא
nor be raised out
יֵ֝עֹ֗רוּ
of their sleep
מִשְּׁנָתָֽם׃
13

מִ֤י
O that
יִתֵּ֨ן׀
me in the grave
בִּשְׁא֬וֹל
thou wouldest hide
תַּצְפִּנֵ֗נִי
that thou wouldest keep me secret
תַּ֭סְתִּירֵנִי

עַד
be past
שׁ֣וּב
until thy wrath
אַפֶּ֑ךָ
that thou wouldest appoint
תָּ֤שִׁ֥ית

לִ֖י
me a set time
חֹ֣ק
and remember
וְתִזְכְּרֵֽנִי׃
14

אִם
die
יָמ֥וּת
If a man
גֶּ֗בֶר
shall he live
הֲיִֽ֫חְיֶ֥ה

כָּל
again all the days
יְמֵ֣י
of my appointed time
צְבָאִ֣י
will I wait
אֲיַחֵ֑ל

עַד
come
בּ֝֗וֹא
till my change
חֲלִיפָתִֽי׃
15
Thou shalt call
תִּ֭קְרָא

וְאָנֹכִ֣י
and I will answer
אֶֽעֱנֶ֑ךָּ
to the work
לְֽמַעֲשֵׂ֖ה
of thine hands
יָדֶ֣יךָ
thee thou wilt have a desire
תִכְסֹֽף׃
16

כִּֽי

עַ֭תָּה
my steps
צְעָדַ֣י
For now thou numberest
תִּסְפּ֑וֹר

לֹֽא
dost thou not watch
תִ֝שְׁמֹ֗ר

עַל
over my sin
חַטָּאתִֽי׃
17
is sealed up
חָתֻ֣ם
in a bag
בִּצְר֣וֹר
My transgression
פִּשְׁעִ֑י
and thou sewest up
וַ֝תִּטְפֹּ֗ל

עַל
mine iniquity
עֲוֹנִֽי׃
18
And surely
וְ֭אוּלָם
the mountain
הַר
falling
נוֹפֵ֣ל
cometh to nought
יִבּ֑וֹל
and the rock
וְ֝צ֗וּר
is removed
יֶעְתַּ֥ק
out of his place
מִמְּקֹמֽוֹ׃
19
the stones
אֲבָנִ֤ים׀
wear
שָׁ֥חֲקוּ
The waters
מַ֗יִם
thou washest away
תִּשְׁטֹֽף
the things which grow
סְפִיחֶ֥יהָ
out of the dust
עֲפַר
of the earth
אָ֑רֶץ
the hope
וְתִקְוַ֖ת
of man
אֱנ֣וֹשׁ
and thou destroyest
הֶאֱבַֽדְתָּ׃
20
Thou prevailest
תִּתְקְפֵ֣הוּ
for ever
לָ֭נֶצַח
against him and he passeth
וַֽיַּהֲלֹ֑ךְ
thou changest
מְשַׁנֶּ֥ה
his countenance
פָ֝נָ֗יו
and sendest him away
וַֽתְּשַׁלְּחֵֽהוּ׃
21
come to honour
יִכְבְּד֣וּ
His sons
בָ֭נָיו

וְלֹ֣א
and he knoweth
יֵדָ֑ע
it not and they are brought low
וְ֝יִצְעֲר֗וּ

וְֽלֹא
but he perceiveth
יָבִ֥ין

לָֽמוֹ׃
22

אַךְ
But his flesh
בְּ֭שָׂרוֹ

עָלָ֣יו
upon him shall have pain
יִכְאָ֑ב
and his soul
וְ֝נַפְשׁ֗וֹ

עָלָ֥יו
within him shall mourn
תֶּאֱבָֽל׃
