Wherefore the king

מַדּ֣וּעַ׀

unto me Why is thy countenance

פָּנֶ֣יךָ

sad

רָעִ֗ים

 

וְאַתָּה֙

 

אֵֽינְךָ֣

seeing thou art not sick

חוֹלֶ֔ה

 

אֵ֣ין

 

זֶ֔ה

 

כִּי

 

אִ֖ם

this is nothing else but sorrow

רֹ֣עַֽ

of heart

לֵ֑ב

afraid

וָֽאִירָ֖א

sore

הַרְבֵּ֥ה

Then I was very

מְאֹֽד׃

וָֽאֹמַ֣ר

Let the king

הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ

Let the king

for ever

לְעוֹלָ֣ם

live

יִֽחְיֶ֑ה

 

מַדּ֜וּעַ

 

לֹֽא

 

יֵרְע֣וּ

why should not my countenance

פָנַ֗י

 

אֲשֶׁ֨ר

when the city

הָעִ֜יר

the place

בֵּית

sepulchres

קִבְר֤וֹת

of my fathers

אֲבֹתַי֙

lieth waste

חֲרֵבָ֔ה

and the gates

וּשְׁעָרֶ֖יהָ

thereof are consumed

אֻכְּל֥וּ

with fire

בָאֵֽשׁ׃

said

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר

 

לִי֙

Then the king

הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ

 

עַל

 

מַה

 

זֶּ֖ה

 

אַתָּ֣ה

unto me For what dost thou make request

מְבַקֵּ֑שׁ

So I prayed

וָֽאֶתְפַּלֵּ֔ל

 

אֶל

to the God

אֱלֹהֵ֖י

of heaven

הַשָּׁמָֽיִם׃

And I said

וָֽאֹמַ֣ר

the king

הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ

 

אִם

 

עַל

the king

הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ

If it please

ט֔וֹב

 

וְאִם

have found favour

יִיטַ֥ב

and if thy servant

עַבְדְּךָ֖

in thy sight

לְפָנֶ֑יךָ

 

אֲשֶׁ֧ר

that thou wouldest send

תִּשְׁלָחֵ֣נִי

 

אֶל

me unto Judah

יְהוּדָ֗ה

 

אֶל

unto the city

עִ֛יר

sepulchres

קִבְר֥וֹת

of my fathers

אֲבֹתַ֖י

that I may build

וְאֶבְנֶֽנָּה׃

said

וַיֹּאמֶר֩

 

לִ֨י

And the king

הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙

unto me (the queen

וְהַשֵּׁגַ֣ל׀

also sitting

יוֹשֶׁ֣בֶת

by him

אֶצְל֗וֹ

 

עַד

 

מָתַ֛י

 

יִֽהְיֶ֥ה

For how long shall thy journey

מַֽהֲלָכֲךָ֖

 

וּמָתַ֣י

be and when wilt thou return

תָּשׁ֑וּב

So it pleased

וַיִּיטַ֤ב

 

לִפְנֵֽי

And the king

הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙

to send

וַיִּשְׁלָחֵ֔נִי

me and I set

וָֽאֶתְּנָ֥ה

him a time

זְמָֽן׃

Moreover I said

וָֽאוֹמַר֮

the king

הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ

 

אִם

 

עַל

the king

If it please

אִגְּרוֹת֙

יִתְּנוּ

me to the governors

Then I came

to Jerusalem

and was there three

שְׁלֹשָֽׁה׃

And I arose

וָֽאָק֣וּם׀

in the night

לַ֗יְלָה

 

אֲנִי֮

 

וַֽאֲנָשִׁ֣ים׀

I and some

מְעַט֮

 

עִמִּי֒

 

וְלֹֽא

with me neither told

הִגַּ֣דְתִּי

I any man

לְאָדָ֔ם

 

מָ֗ה

what my God

אֱלֹהַי֙

had put

נֹתֵ֣ן

 

אֶל

in my heart

לִבִּ֔י

to do

לַֽעֲשׂ֖וֹת

at Jerusalem

לִירֽוּשָׁלִָ֑ם

neither was there any beast

הַבְּהֵמָ֔ה

and the gates

וּשְׁעָרֶ֖יהָ

פְּרוּצִ֔ים

and the gates

וּשְׁעָרֶ֖יהָ

thereof were consumed

אֻכְּל֥וּ

with fire

בָאֵֽשׁ׃

Then I went on

לַֽעֲבֹ֥ר

 

אֶל

to the gate

שַׁ֣עַר

of the fountain

הָעַ֔יִן

 

וְאֶל

pool

בְּרֵכַ֖ת

and to the king's

הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ

 

וְאֵין

but there was no place

מָק֥וֹם

for the beast

לַבְּהֵמָ֖ה

Then I went on

לַֽעֲבֹ֥ר

 

תַּחְתָּֽי׃

 

וָֽאֱהִ֨י

Then went I up

עֹלֶ֤ה

by the brook

בַנַּ֙חַל֙

in the night

לַ֔יְלָה

 

וָֽאֱהִ֥י

and viewed

שֹׂבֵ֖ר

the wall

בַּֽחוֹמָ֑ה

and so returned

וָֽאָשֽׁוּב׃

and entered

וָֽאָב֛וֹא

by the gate

בְּשַׁ֥עַר

of the valley

הַגַּ֖יְא

and so returned

וָֽאָשֽׁוּב׃

And the rulers

וְלַסְּגָנִ֗ים

 

לֹ֤א

knew

יָֽדְעוּ֙

 

אָ֣נָה

not whither I went

הָלַ֔כְתִּי

 

וּמָ֖ה

 

אֲנִ֣י

or what I did

עֹשֵׂ֣ה

it to the Jews

וְלַיְּהוּדִ֨ים

nor to the priests

וְלַכֹּֽהֲנִ֜ים

nor to the nobles

וְלַֽחֹרִ֣ים

And the rulers

וְלַסְּגָנִ֗ים

nor to the rest

וּלְיֶ֙תֶר֙

or what I did

עֹשֵׂ֣ה

the work

הַמְּלָאכָ֔ה

 

עַד

neither had I as yet

כֵּ֖ן

 

לֹ֥א

told

הִגַּֽדְתִּי׃

Then said

וָֽאוֹמַ֣ר

 

אֲלֵהֶ֗ם

 

אַתֶּ֤ם

I unto them Ye see

רֹאִים֙

the distress

הָֽרָעָה֙

 

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

 

אֲנַ֣חְנוּ

 

בָ֔הּ

 

אֲשֶׁ֤ר

of Jerusalem

יְרֽוּשָׁלִַ֔ם

lieth waste

חֲרֵבָ֔ה

and the gates

וּשְׁעָרֶ֖יהָ

thereof are burned

נִצְּת֣וּ

with fire

בָאֵ֑שׁ

 

לְכ֗וּ

and let us build up

וְנִבְנֶה֙

 

אֶת

the wall

חוֹמַ֣ת

of Jerusalem

יְרֽוּשָׁלִַ֔ם

 

וְלֹֽא

 

נִהְיֶ֥ה

 

ע֖וֹד

that we be no more a reproach

חֶרְפָּֽה׃

Then I told

וָֽאַגִּ֨יד

 

לָהֶ֜ם

 

אֶת

their hands

יְדֵיהֶ֖ם

of my God

אֱלֹהַ֗י

 

אֲשֶׁר

 

הִיא֙

for this good

לַטּוֹבָֽה׃

 

עָלַ֔י

 

וְאַף

דִּבְרֵ֥י

upon me as also the king's

הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ

 

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

that he had spoken

וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙

 

לִ֑י

that he had spoken

Let us rise up

נָק֣וּם

and build

וּבָנִ֔ינוּ

So they strengthened

וַיְחַזְּק֥וּ

their hands

יְדֵיהֶ֖ם

for this good

לַטּוֹבָֽה׃

heard

וַיִּשְׁמַע֩

But when Sanballat

סַנְבַלַּ֨ט

the Horonite

הַחֹֽרֹנִ֜י

and Tobiah

וְטֹֽבִיָּ֣ה׀

the servant

הָעֶ֣בֶד

the Ammonite

הָֽעַמּוֹנִ֗י

and Geshem

וְגֶ֙שֶׁם֙

the Arabian

הָֽעַרְבִ֔י

it they laughed us to scorn

וַיַּלְעִ֣גוּ

 

לָ֔נוּ

and despised

וַיִּבְז֖וּ

 

עָלֵ֑ינוּ

us and said

וַיֹּֽאמְר֗וּ

 

מָֽה

What is this thing

הַדָּבָ֤ר

 

הַזֶּה֙

 

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

 

אַתֶּ֣ם

that ye do

עֹשִׂ֔ים

 

הַעַ֥ל

against the king

הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ

 

אַתֶּ֥ם

will ye rebel

מֹֽרְדִֽים׃

Then answered

וָֽאָשִׁ֨יב

 

אוֹתָ֜ם

 

דָּבָ֗ר

I them and said

וָֽאוֹמַ֤ר

 

לָהֶם֙

unto them The God

אֱלֹהֵ֣י

of heaven

הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם

 

ה֚וּא

he will prosper

יַצְלִ֣יחַֽ

 

לָ֔נוּ

 

וַֽאֲנַ֥חְנוּ

us therefore we his servants

עֲבָדָ֖יו

will arise

נָק֣וּם

and build

וּבָנִ֑ינוּ

 

וְלָכֶ֗ם

 

אֵֽין

but ye have no portion

חֵ֧לֶק

nor right

וּצְדָקָ֛ה

nor memorial

וְזִכָּר֖וֹן

in Jerusalem

בִּירֽוּשָׁלִָֽם׃
