וְעַתָּ֤ה׀
than I have me in derision
שָֽׂחֲק֣וּ

עָלַי֮
But now they that are younger
צְעִירִ֥ים

מִמֶּ֗נִּי

לְיָ֫מִ֥ים

אֲשֶׁר
I would have disdained
מָאַ֥סְתִּי
whose fathers
אֲבוֹתָ֑ם
to have set
לָ֝שִׁ֗ית

עִם
with the dogs
כַּלְבֵ֥י
of my flock
צֹאנִֽי׃
2

גַּם
might the strength
כֹּ֣חַ
of their hands
יְ֭דֵיהֶם
Yea whereto
לָ֣מָּה

לִּ֑י

עָ֝לֵ֗ימוֹ
was perished
אָ֣בַד
profit me in whom old age
כָּֽלַח׃
3
For want
בְּחֶ֥סֶר
and famine
וּבְכָפָ֗ן
they were solitary
גַּ֫לְמ֥וּד
fleeing
הַֽעֹרְקִ֥ים
into the wilderness
צִיָּ֑ה
in former time
אֶ֝֗מֶשׁ
desolate
שׁוֹאָ֥ה
and waste
וּמְשֹׁאָֽה׃
4
Who cut up
הַקֹּטְפִ֣ים
mallows
מַלּ֣וּחַ

עֲלֵי
by the bushes
שִׂ֑יחַ
roots
וְשֹׁ֖רֶשׁ
and juniper
רְתָמִ֣ים
for their meat
לַחְמָֽם׃
5

מִן
from among
גֵּ֥ו
They were driven forth
יְגֹרָ֑שׁוּ
men (they cried
יָרִ֥יעוּ

עָ֝לֵ֗ימוֹ
after them as after a thief
כַּגַּנָּֽב׃
6
in the clifts
בַּעֲר֣וּץ
of the valleys
נְחָלִ֣ים
To dwell
לִשְׁכֹּ֑ן
in caves
חֹרֵ֖י
of the earth
עָפָ֣ר
and in the rocks
וְכֵפִֽים׃

בֵּין
Among the bushes
שִׂיחִ֥ים
they brayed
יִנְהָ֑קוּ

תַּ֖חַת
under the nettles
חָר֣וּל
they were gathered together
יְסֻפָּֽחוּ׃
8
They were children
בְּנֵ֣י
of fools
נָ֭בָל

גַּם
They were children
בְּנֵ֣י

בְלִי
of base men
שֵׁ֑ם
they were viler
נִ֝כְּא֗וּ

מִן
than the earth
הָאָֽרֶץ׃
9

וְ֭עַתָּה
And now am I their song
נְגִינָתָ֣ם

הָיִ֑יתִי

וָאֱהִ֖י

לָהֶ֣ם
yea I am their byword
לְמִלָּֽה׃
10
They abhor
תִּֽ֭עֲבוּנִי
me they flee far
רָ֣חֲקוּ

מֶ֑נִּי
in my face
וּ֝מִפָּנַ֗י

לֹא
from me and spare
חָ֥שְׂכוּ
not to spit
רֹֽק׃
11

כִּֽי
my cord
יִתְרִ֣ו
Because he hath loosed
פִ֭תַּח
and afflicted
וַיְעַנֵּ֑נִי
the bridle
וְ֝רֶ֗סֶן
before
מִפָּנַ֥י
me they have also let loose
שִׁלֵּֽחוּ׃
12

עַל
Upon my right
יָמִין֮
the youth
פִּרְחַ֪ח
hand rise
יָ֫ק֥וּמוּ
my feet
רַגְלַ֥י
they push away
שִׁלֵּ֑חוּ
and they raise up
וַיָּסֹ֥לּוּ

עָ֝לַ֗י
against me the ways
אָרְח֥וֹת
of their destruction
אֵידָֽם׃
13
They mar
נָתְס֗וּ
my path
נְֽתִיבָ֫תִ֥י
my calamity
לְהַוָּתִֽי
they set forward
יֹעִ֑ילוּ

לֹ֖א
they have no helper
עֹזֵ֣ר

לָֽמוֹ׃
14
breaking
כְּפֶ֣רֶץ
upon me as a wide
רָחָ֣ב
They came
יֶאֱתָ֑יוּ
in of waters in
תַּ֥חַת
the desolation
שֹׁ֝אָ֗ה
they rolled
הִתְגַּלְגָּֽלוּ׃
15
are turned
הָהְפַּ֥ךְ

עָלַ֗י
Terrors
בַּלָּ֫ה֥וֹת
upon me they pursue
תִּרְדֹּ֣ף
as the wind
כָּ֭רוּחַ
my soul
נְדִבָתִ֑י
as a cloud
וּ֝כְעָ֗ב
passeth away
עָבְרָ֥ה
and my welfare
יְשֻׁעָתִֽי׃
16

וְעַתָּ֗ה

עָ֭לַי
is poured out
תִּשְׁתַּפֵּ֣ךְ
And now my soul
נַפְשִׁ֑י
have taken hold
יֹ֖אחֲז֣וּנִי
upon me the days
יְמֵי
of affliction
עֹֽנִי׃
17
in me in the night season
לַ֗יְלָה
My bones
עֲ֭צָמַי
are pierced
נִקַּ֣ר

מֵעָלָ֑י
and my sinews
וְ֝עֹרְקַ֗י

לֹ֣א
take no rest
יִשְׁכָּבֽוּן׃
18
By the great
בְּרָב
force
כֹּ֭חַ
changed
יִתְחַפֵּ֣שׂ
of my disease is my garment
לְבוּשִׁ֑י
as the collar
כְּפִ֖י
of my coat
כֻתָּנְתִּ֣י
it bindeth me about
יַֽאַזְרֵֽנִי׃
19
He hath cast
הֹרָ֥נִי
me into the mire
לַחֹ֑מֶר
and I am become like
וָ֝אֶתְמַשֵּׁ֗ל
dust
כֶּעָפָ֥ר
and ashes
וָאֵֽפֶר׃
20
I cry
אֲשַׁוַּ֣ע

אֵ֭לֶיךָ

וְלֹ֣א
unto thee and thou dost not hear
תַעֲנֵ֑נִי
me I stand up
עָ֝מַ֗דְתִּי
and thou regardest
וַתִּתְבֹּ֥נֶן

בִּֽי׃
21
Thou art become
תֵּהָפֵ֣ךְ
cruel
לְאַכְזָ֣ר

לִ֑י
to me with thy strong
בְּעֹ֖צֶם
hand
יָדְךָ֣
thou opposest
תִשְׂטְמֵֽנִי׃
22
Thou liftest me up
תִּשָּׂאֵ֣נִי

אֶל
to the wind
ר֭וּחַ
thou causest me to ride
תַּרְכִּיבֵ֑נִי
upon it and dissolvest
וּ֝תְמֹגְגֵ֗נִי
my substance
תֻּשִׁוָּֽה׃
23

כִּֽי
For I know
יָ֭דַעְתִּי
me to death
מָ֣וֶת
that thou wilt bring
תְּשִׁיבֵ֑נִי
and to the house
וּבֵ֖ית
appointed
מוֹעֵ֣ד

לְכָל
for all living
חָֽי׃
24

אַ֣ךְ

לֹא
to the grave
בְ֭עִי
Howbeit he will not stretch out
יִשְׁלַח
his hand
יָ֑ד

אִם
in his destruction
בְּ֝פִיד֗וֹ

לָהֶ֥ן
though they cry
שֽׁוּעַ׃
25

אִם

לֹ֣א
Did not I weep
בָ֭כִיתִי
for him that was in trouble
לִקְשֵׁה

י֑וֹם
grieved
עָֽגְמָ֥ה
was not my soul
נַ֝פְשִׁ֗י
for the poor
לָאֶבְיֽוֹן׃
26

כִּ֤י

unto me and when I waited
וַֽאֲיַחֲלָ֥ה
for light
לְ֝א֗וֹר
came
וַיָּ֥בֹא
darkness
אֹֽפֶל׃
27
My bowels
מֵעַ֖י
boiled
רֻתְּח֥וּ

וְלֹא
and rested
דָ֗מּוּ
prevented
קִדְּמֻ֥נִי
not the days
יְמֵי
of affliction
עֹֽנִי׃
28
mourning
קֹדֵ֣ר
I went
הִ֭לַּכְתִּי

בְּלֹ֣א
without the sun
חַמָּ֑ה
I stood up
קַ֖מְתִּי
in the congregation
בַקָּהָ֣ל
and I cried
אֲשַׁוֵּֽעַ׃
29
I am a brother
אָ֭ח

הָיִ֣יתִי
to dragons
לְתַנִּ֑ים
and a companion
וְ֝רֵ֗עַ
to owls
לִבְנ֥וֹת

יַעֲנָֽה׃
30
My skin
ע֭וֹרִי
is black
שָׁחַ֣ר

מֵעָלָ֑י
upon me and my bones
וְעַצְמִי
are burned
חָ֝֗רָה

מִנִּי
with heat
חֹֽרֶב׃
31

וַיְהִ֣י
also is turned to mourning
לְ֭אֵבֶל
My harp
כִּנֹּרִ֑י
and my organ
וְ֝עֻגָבִ֗י
into the voice
לְק֣וֹל
of them that weep
בֹּכִֽים׃
