1
a covenant
בְּ֭רִית
I made
כָּרַ֣תִּי
with mine eyes
לְעֵינָ֑י

וּמָ֥ה
why then should I think
אֶ֝תְבּוֹנֵ֗ן

עַל
upon a maid
בְּתוּלָֽה׃
2

וּמֶ֤ה׀
For what portion
חֵ֣לֶק
of God
אֱל֣וֹהַּ
is there from above
מִמָּ֑עַל
and what inheritance
וְֽנַחֲלַ֥ת
of the Almighty
שַׁ֝דַּ֗י
from on high
מִמְּרֹמִֽים׃
3

הֲלֹא
Is not destruction
אֵ֥יד
to the wicked
לְעַוָּ֑ל
and a strange
וְ֝נֵ֗כֶר
punishment to the workers
לְפֹ֣עֲלֵי
of iniquity
אָֽוֶן׃
4

הֲלֹא

ה֭וּא
Doth not he see
יִרְאֶ֣ה
my ways
דְרָכָ֑י

וְֽכָל
all my steps
צְעָדַ֥י
and count
יִסְפּֽוֹר׃
5

אִם
If I have walked
הָלַ֥כְתִּי

עִם
with vanity
שָׁ֑וְא
hath hasted
וַתַּ֖חַשׁ

עַל
to deceit
מִרְמָ֣ה
or if my foot
רַגְלִֽי׃
6
Let me be weighed
יִשְׁקְלֵ֥נִי
balance
בְמֹאזְנֵי
in an even
צֶ֑דֶק
may know
וְיֵדַ֥ע
that God
אֱ֝ל֗וֹהַּ
mine integrity
תֻּמָּתִֽי׃
7

אִ֥ם
hath turned out
תִּטֶּ֣ה
If my step
אַשֻּׁרִי֮

מִנִּ֪י
of the way
הַ֫דָּ֥רֶךְ
after
וְאַחַ֣ר
mine eyes
עֵ֭ינַי
walked
הָלַ֣ךְ
and mine heart
לִבִּ֑י
to mine hands
וּ֝בְכַפַּ֗י
hath cleaved
דָּ֣בַק
and if any blot
מֻאֽוּם׃
8
Then let me sow
אֶ֭זְרְעָה
and let another
וְאַחֵ֣ר
eat
יֹאכֵ֑ל
yea let my offspring
וְֽצֶאֱצָאַ֥י
be rooted out
יְשֹׁרָֽשׁוּ׃
9

אִם
have been deceived
נִפְתָּ֣ה
If mine heart
לִ֭בִּי

עַל
by a woman
אִשָּׁ֑ה

וְעַל
door
פֶּ֖תַח
at my neighbour's
רֵעִ֣י
or if I have laid wait
אָרָֽבְתִּי׃
10
grind
תִּטְחַ֣ן
and let others
אֲחֵרִֽין׃
Then let my wife
אִשְׁתִּ֑י

וְ֝עָלֶ֗יהָ
bow down
יִכְרְע֥וּן
and let others
אֲחֵרִֽין׃
11

כִּי

הִ֥וא
For this is an heinous crime
זִמָּ֑ה

וְ֝ה֗יּא
yea it is an iniquity
עָוֹ֥ן
to be punished by the judges
פְּלִילִֽים׃
12

כִּ֤י
For it is a fire
אֵ֣שׁ

הִ֭יא

עַד
to destruction
אֲבַדּ֣וֹן
that consumeth
תֹּאכֵ֑ל

וּֽבְכָל
all mine increase
תְּב֖וּאָתִ֣י
and would root out
תְשָׁרֵֽשׁ׃
13

אִם
If I did despise
אֶמְאַ֗ס
the cause
מִשְׁפַּ֣ט
of my manservant
עַ֭בְדִּי
or of my maidservant
וַאֲמָתִ֑י

בְּ֝רִבָ֗ם

עִמָּדִֽי׃
14

וּמָ֣ה
What then shall I do
אֶֽ֭עֱשֶׂה

כִּֽי
riseth up
יָק֣וּם
when God
אֵ֑ל

וְכִֽי
and when he visiteth
יִ֝פְקֹ֗ד

מָ֣ה
what shall I answer
אֲשִׁיבֶֽנּוּ׃
15

הֲֽלֹא
me in the womb
בַ֭בֶּטֶן
Did not he that made
עָשָׂ֑הוּ
Did not he that made
עָשָׂ֑הוּ
fashion
וַ֝יְכֻנֶ֗נּוּ
us in the womb
בָּרֶ֥חֶם
him and did not one
אֶחָֽד׃
16

אִם
If I have withheld
אֶ֭מְנַע
from their desire
מֵחֵ֣פֶץ
the poor
דַּלִּ֑ים
or have caused the eyes
וְעֵינֵ֖י
of the widow
אַלְמָנָ֣ה
to fail
אֲכַלֶּֽה׃
17
Or have eaten
אָכַ֖ל
my morsel
פִּתִּ֣י

לְבַדִּ֑י

וְלֹא
Or have eaten
אָכַ֖ל
myself alone and the fatherless
יָת֣וֹם

מִמֶּֽנָּה׃
18

כִּ֣י
For from my youth
מִ֭נְּעוּרַי
he was brought up
גְּדֵלַ֣נִי
with me as with a father
כְאָ֑ב
womb
וּמִבֶּ֖טֶן
her from my mother's
אִמִּ֣י
and I have guided
אַנְחֶֽנָּה׃
19

אִם
If I have seen
אֶרְאֶ֣ה
any perish
א֭וֹבֵד

מִבְּלִ֣י
for want of clothing
לְב֑וּשׁ

וְאֵ֥ין
without covering
כְּ֝ס֗וּת
or any poor
לָאֶבְיֽוֹן׃
20

אִם

לֹ֣א
have not blessed
בֵרֲכ֣וּנִי
If his loins
חֲלָצָ֑ו
with the fleece
וּמִגֵּ֥ז
of my sheep
כְּ֝בָשַׂי
me and if he were not warmed
יִתְחַמָּֽם׃
21

אִם
If I have lifted up
הֲנִיפ֣וֹתִי

עַל
against the fatherless
יָת֣וֹם
my hand
יָדִ֑י

כִּֽי
when I saw
אֶרְאֶ֥ה
in the gate
בַ֝שַּׁ֗עַר
my help
עֶזְרָתִֽי׃
22
Then let mine arm
כְּ֭תֵפִי
from my shoulder blade
מִשִּׁכְמָ֣ה
fall
תִפּ֑וֹל
and mine arm
וְ֝אֶזְרֹעִ֗י
from the bone
מִקָּנָ֥ה
be broken
תִשָּׁבֵֽר׃
23

כִּ֤י
was a terror
פַ֣חַד

אֵ֭לַי
For destruction
אֵ֣יד
from God
אֵ֑ל
to me and by reason of his highness
וּ֝מִשְּׂאֵת֗וֹ

לֹ֣א
I could
אוּכָֽל׃
24

אִם
If I have made
שַׂ֣מְתִּי
gold
זָהָ֣ב
my hope
כִּסְלִ֑י
to the fine gold
וְ֝לַכֶּ֗תֶם
or have said
אָמַ֥רְתִּי
Thou art my confidence
מִבְטַחִֽי׃
25

אִם
If I rejoiced
אֶ֭שְׂמַח

כִּי
was great
רַ֣ב
because my wealth
חֵילִ֑י

וְכִֽי
much
כַ֝בִּ֗יר
had gotten
מָצְאָ֥ה
and because mine hand
יָדִֽי׃
26

אִם
If I beheld
אֶרְאֶ֣ה
the sun
א֖וֹר

כִּ֣י
when it shined
יָהֵ֑ל
or the moon
וְ֝יָרֵ֗חַ
in brightness
יָקָ֥ר
walking
הֹלֵֽךְ׃
27
enticed
וַיִּ֣פְתְּ
hath been secretly
בַּסֵּ֣תֶר
And my heart
לִבִּ֑י
hath kissed
וַתִּשַּׁ֖ק
my hand
יָדִ֣י
or my mouth
לְפִֽי׃
28

גַּם

ה֭וּא
This also were an iniquity
עָוֹ֣ן
to be punished by the judge
פְּלִילִ֑י

כִּֽי
for I should have denied
כִחַ֖שְׁתִּי
the God
לָאֵ֣ל
that is above
מִמָּֽעַל׃
29

אִם
If I rejoiced
אֶ֭שְׂמַח
at the destruction
בְּפִ֣יד
of him that hated
מְשַׂנְאִ֑י
me or lifted up
וְ֝הִתְעֹרַ֗רְתִּי

כִּֽי
found
מְצָ֥אוֹ
myself when evil
רָֽע׃
30

וְלֹא
Neither have I suffered
נָתַ֣תִּי
to sin
לַחֲטֹ֣א
my mouth
חִכִּ֑י
by wishing
לִשְׁאֹ֖ל
a curse
בְּאָלָ֣ה
to his soul
נַפְשֽׁוֹ׃
31

אִם

לֹ֣א
said
אָ֭מְרוּ
If the men
מְתֵ֣י
of my tabernacle
אָהֳלִ֑י

מִֽי
not Oh that we had
יִתֵּ֥ן
of his flesh
מִ֝בְּשָׂר֗וֹ

לֹ֣א
we cannot be satisfied
נִשְׂבָּֽע׃
32
in the street
בַּ֭חוּץ

לֹא
did not lodge
יָלִ֣ין
The stranger
גֵּ֑ר
my doors
דְּ֝לָתַ֗י
to the traveller
לָאֹ֥רַח
but I opened
אֶפְתָּֽח׃
33

אִם
If I covered
כִּסִּ֣יתִי
as Adam
כְאָדָ֣ם
my transgressions
פְּשָׁעָ֑י
by hiding
לִטְמ֖וֹן
in my bosom
בְּחֻבִּ֣י
mine iniquity
עֲוֹנִֽי׃
34

כִּ֤י
Did I fear
אֶֽעֱר֨וֹץ׀
multitude
הָ֘מ֤וֹן
a great
רַבָּ֗ה
or did the contempt
וּבוּז
of families
מִשְׁפָּח֥וֹת
terrify
יְחִתֵּ֑נִי
me that I kept silence
וָ֝אֶדֹּ֗ם

לֹא
and went not out
אֵ֥צֵא
of the door
פָֽתַח׃
35

מִ֤י
Oh that
יִתֶּן

לִ֨י׀
one would hear
שֹׁ֘מֵ֤עַֽ

לִ֗י

הֶן
me! behold my desire
תָּ֭וִי
is that the Almighty
שַׁדַּ֣י
would answer
יַעֲנֵ֑נִי
a book
וְסֵ֥פֶר
had written
כָּ֝תַ֗ב
me and that mine adversary
אִ֣ישׁ

רִיבִֽי׃
36

אִם

לֹ֣א

עַל
it upon my shoulder
שִׁ֭כְמִי
Surely I would take
אֶשָּׂאֶ֑נּוּ
and bind
אֶֽעֶנְדֶ֖נּוּ
it as a crown
עֲטָר֣וֹת

לִֽי׃
37
unto him the number
מִסְפַּ֣ר
of my steps
צְ֭עָדַי
I would declare
אַגִּידֶ֑נּוּ

כְּמוֹ
as a prince
נָ֝גִ֗יד
would I go near
אֲקָרֲבֶֽנּוּ׃
38

אִם

עָ֭לַי
If my land
אַדְמָתִ֣י
cry
תִזְעָ֑ק
likewise
וְ֝יַ֗חַד
against me or that the furrows
תְּלָמֶ֥יהָ
thereof complain
יִבְכָּיֽוּן׃
39

אִם
the fruits
כֹּ֭חָהּ
If I have eaten
אָכַ֣לְתִּי

בְלִי
thereof without money
כָ֑סֶף
their life
וְנֶ֖פֶשׁ
or have caused the owners
בְּעָלֶ֣יהָ
thereof to lose
הִפָּֽחְתִּי׃
40

תַּ֤חַת
instead of wheat
חִטָּ֨ה׀
grow
יֵ֥צֵא
Let thistles
ח֗וֹחַ

וְתַֽחַת
instead of barley
שְׂעֹרָ֥ה
and cockle
בָאְשָׁ֑ה
are ended
תַּ֝֗מּוּ
The words
דִּבְרֵ֥י
of Job
אִיּֽוֹב׃
