1
I said
אָמַ֤רְתִּֽי

אֲנִי֙
in mine heart
בְּלִבִּ֔י

לְכָה

נָּ֛א
I will prove
אֲנַסְּכָ֥ה
thee with mirth
בְשִׂמְחָ֖ה
therefore enjoy
וּרְאֵ֣ה
pleasure
בְט֑וֹב

וְהִנֵּ֥ה

גַם

ה֖וּא
and behold this also is vanity
הָֽבֶל׃
2
of laughter
לִשְׂח֖וֹק
I said
אָמַ֣רְתִּי
It is mad
מְהוֹלָ֑ל
and of mirth
וּלְשִׂמְחָ֖ה

מַה
What
זֹּ֥ה
doeth
עֹשָֽׂה׃
3
I sought
תַּ֣רְתִּי
in mine heart
וְלִבִּ֞י
to give
לִמְשׁ֥וֹךְ
unto wine
בַּיַּ֖יִן

אֶת
myself
בְּשָׂרִ֑י
in mine heart
וְלִבִּ֞י
yet acquainting
נֹהֵ֤ג
with wisdom
בַּֽחָכְמָה֙
and to lay hold
וְלֶאֱחֹ֣ז
on folly
בְּסִכְל֔וּת

עַ֣ד

אֲשֶׁר
till I might see
אֶרְאֶ֗ה

אֵי

זֶ֨ה
what was that good
ט֜וֹב
for the sons
לִבְנֵ֤י
of men
הָאָדָם֙

אֲשֶׁ֤ר
which they should do
יַעֲשׂוּ֙

תַּ֣חַת
under the heaven
הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם
all
מִסְפַּ֖ר
the days
יְמֵ֥י
of their life
חַיֵּיהֶֽם׃
4
I made me great
הִגְדַּ֖לְתִּי
works
מַעֲשָׂ֑י
I builded
בָּנִ֤יתִי

לִי֙
me houses
בָּתִּ֔ים
I planted
נָטַ֥עְתִּי

לִ֖י
me vineyards
כְּרָמִֽים׃
5
I made
עָשִׂ֣יתִי

לִ֔י
me gardens
גַּנּ֖וֹת
and orchards
וּפַרְדֵּסִ֑ים
and I planted
וְנָטַ֥עְתִּי

בָהֶ֖ם
trees
עֵ֥ץ

כָּל
in them of all kind of fruits
פֶּֽרִי׃
6
I made
עָשִׂ֥יתִי

לִ֖י
me pools
בְּרֵכ֣וֹת
of water
מָ֑יִם
to water
לְהַשְׁק֣וֹת

מֵהֶ֔ם
therewith the wood
יַ֖עַר
that bringeth forth
צוֹמֵ֥חַ
trees
עֵצִֽים׃
7
I got
קָנִ֙יתִי֙
me servants
עֲבָדִ֣ים
and maidens
וּשְׁפָח֔וֹת
and had servants born
וּבְנֵי
in my house
בַ֖יִת

הָ֣יָה

לִ֑י

גַּ֣ם
possessions
מִקְנֶה֩
of great
בָקָ֨ר
and small cattle
וָצֹ֤אן
also I had great
הַרְבֵּה֙

הָ֣יָה

לִ֔י

מִכֹּ֛ל

שֶֽׁהָי֥וּ
before
לְפָנַ֖י
above all that were in Jerusalem
בִּירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃
8
I gathered
כָּנַ֤סְתִּי

לִי֙

גַּם
me also silver
כֶּ֣סֶף
and gold
וְזָהָ֔ב
and the peculiar
וּסְגֻלַּ֥ת
treasure of kings
מְלָכִ֖ים
and of the provinces
וְהַמְּדִינ֑וֹת
I gat
עָשִׂ֨יתִי

לִ֜י
and women singers
וְשָׁר֗וֹת
and women singers
וְשָׁר֗וֹת
and the delights
וְתַעֲנוּגֹ֛ת
of the sons
בְּנֵ֥י
of men
הָאָדָ֖ם
as musical instruments
וְשִׁדּֽוֹת׃
as musical instruments
וְשִׁדּֽוֹת׃
9
So I was great
וְגָדַ֣לְתִּי
and increased
וְהוֹסַ֔פְתִּי

מִכֹּ֛ל

שֶׁהָיָ֥ה
more than all that were before
לְפָנַ֖י
me in Jerusalem
בִּירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם

אַ֥ף
also my wisdom
חָכְמָתִ֖י
remained
עָ֥מְדָה

לִּֽי׃
10

וְכֹל֙

אֲשֶׁ֣ר
desired
שָֽׁאֲל֣וּ
And whatsoever mine eyes
עֵינַ֔י

לֹ֥א
I kept
אָצַ֖לְתִּי

מֵהֶ֑ם

לֹֽא
not from them I withheld
מָנַ֨עְתִּי

אֶת
for my heart
לִבִּ֤י

מִכָּל
from any joy
שִׂמְחָ֗ה

כִּֽי
for my heart
לִבִּ֤י
rejoiced
שָׂמֵ֙חַ֙

מִכָּל
in all my labour
עֲמָלִֽי׃

וְזֶֽה

הָיָ֥ה
and this was my portion
חֶלְקִ֖י

מִכָּל
in all my labour
עֲמָלִֽי׃
11
Then I looked
וּפָנִ֣יתִֽי

אֲנִ֗י

בְּכָל
on all the works
מַעֲשַׂי֙
had wrought
לַעֲשׂ֑וֹת
that my hands
יָדַ֔י
and on the labour
וּבֶֽעָמָ֖ל
that I had laboured
שֶׁעָמַ֣לְתִּי
had wrought
לַעֲשׂ֑וֹת

וְהִנֵּ֨ה

הַכֹּ֥ל
and behold all was vanity
הֶ֙בֶל֙
and vexation
וּרְע֣וּת
of spirit
ר֔וּחַ

וְאֵ֥ין
and there was no profit
יִתְר֖וֹן

תַּ֥חַת
under the sun
הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃
12
And I turned
וּפָנִ֤יתִֽי

אֲנִי֙
myself to behold
לִרְא֣וֹת
wisdom
חָכְמָ֔ה
and madness
וְהוֹלֵל֖וֹת
and folly
וְסִכְל֑וּת

כִּ֣י׀

מֶ֣ה
for what can the man
הָאָדָ֗ם
do that cometh
שֶׁיָּבוֹא֙
after
אַחֲרֵ֣י
the king
הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ

אֵ֥ת

אֲשֶׁר
even that which hath been already
כְּבָ֖ר
done
עָשֽׂוּהוּ׃
13
Then I saw
וְרָאִ֣יתִי

אָ֔נִי
that
שֶׁיֵּ֥שׁ
excelleth
כִּֽיתְר֥וֹן
wisdom
לַֽחָכְמָ֖ה

מִן
folly
הַסִּכְל֑וּת
excelleth
כִּֽיתְר֥וֹן
as far as light
הָא֖וֹר

מִן
darkness
הַחֹֽשֶׁךְ׃
14
The wise man's
הֶֽחָכָם֙
eyes
עֵינָ֣יו
are in his head
בְּרֹאשׁ֔וֹ
but the fool
וְהַכְּסִ֖יל
in darkness
בַּחֹ֣שֶׁךְ
walketh
הוֹלֵ֑ךְ
and I myself perceived
וְיָדַ֣עְתִּי

גַם

אָ֔נִי
event
שֶׁמִּקְרֶ֥ה
also that one
אֶחָ֖ד
happeneth
יִקְרֶ֥ה

אֶת

כֻּלָּֽם׃
15
said
וְאָמַ֨רְתִּֽי

אֲנִ֜י
I in my heart
בְלִבִּ֔י
As it happeneth
כְּמִקְרֵ֤ה
to the fool
הַכְּסִיל֙
even to me
שֶׁגַּם

אֲנִ֣י
so it happeneth
יִקְרֵ֔נִי

וְלָ֧מָּה
wise
חָכַ֛מְתִּי

אֲנִ֖י
Then
אָ֣ז
and why was I then more
יוֹתֵ֑ר
Then I said
וְדִבַּ֣רְתִּי
I in my heart
בְלִבִּ֔י
even to me
שֶׁגַּם

זֶ֖ה
that this also is vanity
הָֽבֶל׃
16

כִּי֩

אֵ֨ין
For there is no remembrance
זִכְר֧וֹן
of the wise
הֶחָכָ֖ם
more than
עִֽם
man as the fool
הַכְּסִֽיל׃
for ever
לְעוֹלָ֑ם
seeing that which now
בְּשֶׁכְּבָ֞ר
is in the days
הַיָּמִ֤ים
to come
הַבָּאִים֙

הַכֹּ֣ל
shall all be forgotten
נִשְׁכָּ֔ח

וְאֵ֛יךְ
And how dieth
יָמ֥וּת
of the wise
הֶחָכָ֖ם
more than
עִֽם
man as the fool
הַכְּסִֽיל׃
17
Therefore I hated
וְשָׂנֵ֙אתִי֙

אֶת
life
הַ֣חַיִּ֔ים

כִּ֣י
is grievous
רַ֤ע

עָלַי֙
because the work
הַֽמַּעֲשֶׂ֔ה
that is wrought
שֶׁנַּעֲשָׂ֖ה

תַּ֣חַת
under the sun
הַשָּׁ֑מֶשׁ

כִּֽי

הַכֹּ֥ל
unto me for all is vanity
הֶ֖בֶל
and vexation
וּרְע֥וּת
of spirit
רֽוּחַ׃
18
Yea I hated
וְשָׂנֵ֤אתִֽי

אֲנִי֙

אֶת

כָּל
all my labour
עֲמָלִ֔י

שֶׁאֲנִ֥י
which I had taken
עָמֵ֖ל

תַּ֣חַת
under the sun
הַשָּׁ֑מֶשׁ
because I should leave
שֶׁ֣אַנִּיחֶ֔נּוּ
it unto the man
לָאָדָ֖ם

שֶׁיִּהְיֶ֥ה
that shall be after
אַחֲרָֽי׃
19

וּמִ֣י
And who knoweth
יוֹדֵ֗עַ
whether he shall be a wise
הֶֽחָכָ֤ם

יִהְיֶה֙

א֣וֹ
man or a fool
סָכָ֔ל
yet shall he have rule
וְיִשְׁלַט֙

בְּכָל
over all my labour
עֲמָלִ֔י
wherein I have laboured
שֶֽׁעָמַ֥לְתִּי
and wherein I have shewed myself wise
וְשֶׁחָכַ֖מְתִּי

תַּ֣חַת
under the sun
הַשָּׁ֑מֶשׁ

גַּם

זֶ֖ה
This is also vanity
הָֽבֶל׃
20
Therefore I went about
וְסַבּ֥וֹתִֽי

אֲנִ֖י
to cause
לְיַאֵ֣שׁ

אֶת
my heart
לִבִּ֑י

עַ֚ל

כָּל
of all the labour
הֶ֣עָמָ֔ל
which I took
שֶׁעָמַ֖לְתִּי

תַּ֥חַת
under the sun
הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃
21

כִּי
For there is
יֵ֣שׁ
a man

שֶׁעֲמָל֛וֹ
is in wisdom
בְּחָכְמָ֥ה

a man

שֶׁלֹּ֤א

This also is vanity
הֶ֖בֶל
evil
וְרָעָ֥ה

wherein

עָמֵ֖ל

תַּ֥חַת
under the sun
הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃
23

כִּ֧י

There is nothing better
