לִבְרֹ֣חַ

to Tarshish

תַּרְשִׁ֔ישָׁה

from the presence

מִלִּפְנֵ֖י

of the LORD

יְהוָֽה׃

and went down

וַיֵּ֤רֶד

to Joppa

יָפ֜וֹ

and he found

וַיִּמְצָ֥א

a ship

אָנִיָּ֣ה׀

going

לָב֤וֹא

to Tarshish

תַּרְשִׁ֔ישָׁה

so he paid

וַיִּתֵּ֨ן

the fare

שְׂכָרָ֜הּ

and went down

וַיֵּ֤רֶד

 

בָּהּ֙

going

לָב֤וֹא

 

עִמָּהֶם֙

to Tarshish

תַּרְשִׁ֔ישָׁה

from the presence

מִלִּפְנֵ֖י

of the LORD

יְהוָֽה׃

But the LORD

וַֽיהוָ֗ה

sent out

הֵטִ֤יל

wind

רֽוּחַ

a great

גָּד֖וֹל

 

אֶל

in the sea

בַּיָּ֑ם

 

וַיְהִ֥י

tempest

סַֽעַר

a great

גָּד֖וֹל

in the sea

בַּיָּ֑ם

so that the ship

וְהָ֣אֳנִיָּ֔ה

was like

חִשְּׁבָ֖ה

to be broken

לְהִשָּׁבֵֽר׃

were afraid

וַיִּֽירְא֣וּ

Then the mariners

הַמַּלָּחִ֗ים

and cried

וַֽיִּזְעֲקוּ֮

every man

אִ֣ישׁ

 

אֶל

unto his god

אֱלֹהָיו֒

and cast forth

וַיָּטִ֨לוּ

 

אֶת

the wares

הַכֵּלִ֜ים

 

אֲשֶׁ֤ר

that were in the ship

בָּֽאֳנִיָּה֙

 

אֶל

into the sea

הַיָּ֔ם

to lighten

לְהָקֵ֖ל

 

מֵֽעֲלֵיהֶ֑ם

it of them But Jonah

וְיוֹנָ֗ה

was gone down

יָרַד֙

יַרְכְּתֵ֣י

הַסְּפִינָ֔ה

and he lay

וַיִּשְׁכַּ֖ב

and was fast asleep

וַיֵּרָדַֽם׃

So the shipmaster

to him and said

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר

לְּךָ֣

unto him What meanest thou O sleeper

נִרְדָּ֑ם

arise

ק֚וּם

call

קְרָ֣א

 

אֶל

if so be that God

הָאֱלֹהִ֛ים

 

אוּלַ֞י

will think

יִתְעַשֵּׁ֧ת

if so be that God

הָאֱלֹהִ֛ים

 

לָ֖נוּ

 

וְלֹ֥א

upon us that we perish

נֹאבֵֽד׃

And they said

וַיֹּאמְר֞וּ

every one

אִ֣ישׁ

 

אֶל

to his fellow

רֵעֵ֗הוּ

 

לְכוּ֙

and let us cast

וַיִּפֹּ֥ל

and the lot

הַגּוֹרָ֖ל

that we may know

וְנֵ֣דְעָ֔ה

for whose cause

בְּשֶׁלְּמִ֛י

this evil

הָרָעָ֥ה

 

הַזֹּ֖את

 

לָ֑נוּ

and let us cast

וַיִּפֹּ֥ל

and the lot

הַגּוֹרָ֖ל

and let us cast

וַיִּפֹּ֥ל

upon Jonah

יוֹנָֽה׃

Then said

וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ

 

אֵלָ֔יו

they unto him Tell

הַגִּידָה

 

נָּ֣א

 

לָ֔נוּ

 

בַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר

 

לְמִי

us we pray thee for whose cause this evil

הָרָעָ֥ה

 

הַזֹּ֖את

 

לָ֑נוּ

 

מַה

is upon us What is thine occupation

מְּלַאכְתְּךָ֙

and whence

וּמֵאַ֣יִן

comest

תָּב֔וֹא

 

מָ֣ה

thou what is thy country

אַרְצֶ֔ךָ

 

וְאֵֽי

 

מִזֶּ֥ה

and of what people

עַ֖ם

 

אָֽתָּה׃

And he said

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר

 

אֲלֵיהֶ֖ם

unto them I am an Hebrew

עִבְרִ֣י

 

אָנֹ֑כִי

 

וְאֶת

the LORD

יְהוָ֞ה

the God

אֱלֹהֵ֤י

of heaven

הַשָּׁמַ֙יִם֙

 

אֲנִ֣י

and I fear

יָרֵ֔א

 

אֲשֶׁר

which hath made

עָשָׂ֥ה

 

אֶת

the sea

הַיָּ֖ם

 

וְאֶת

and the dry

הַיַּבָּשָֽׁה׃

afraid

וַיִּֽירְא֤וּ

Then were the men

הָאֲנָשִׁ֗ים

 

יִרְאָ֣ה

exceedingly

גְדוֹלָ֔ה

and said

וַיֹּאמְר֥וּ

 

אֵלָ֖יו

 

מַה

 

זֹּ֣את

unto him Why hast thou done

עָשִׂ֑יתָ

 

כִּֽי

knew

יָדְע֣וּ

Then were the men

הָאֲנָשִׁ֗ים

 

כִּֽי

from the presence

מִלִּפְנֵ֤י

of the LORD

יְהוָה֙

 

ה֣וּא

that he fled

בֹרֵ֔חַ

 

כִּ֥י

because he had told

הִגִּ֖יד

 

לָהֶֽם׃

Then said

וַיֹּאמְר֤וּ

 

אֵלָיו֙

 

מַה

they unto him What shall we do

נַּ֣עֲשֶׂה

 

לָּ֔ךְ

may be calm

וְיִשְׁתֹּ֥ק

unto thee that the sea

הַיָּ֖ם

 

מֵֽעָלֵ֑ינוּ

 

כִּ֥י

unto thee that the sea

הַיָּ֖ם

wrought

הוֹלֵ֥ךְ

and was tempestuous

וְסֹעֵֽר׃

And he said

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר

 

אֲלֵיהֶ֗ם

unto them Take me up

שָׂא֙וּנִי֙

and cast me forth

וַהֲטִילֻ֣נִי

 

אֶל

into the sea

הַיָּ֖ם

be calm

וְיִשְׁתֹּ֥ק

into the sea

הַיָּ֖ם

 

מֵֽעֲלֵיכֶ֑ם

 

כִּ֚י

unto you for I know

יוֹדֵ֣עַ

 

אָ֔נִי

 

כִּ֣י

that for my sake

בְשֶׁלִּ֔י

tempest

הַסַּ֧עַר

this great

הַגָּד֛וֹל

 

הַזֶּ֖ה

 

עֲלֵיכֶֽם׃

rowed hard

וַיַּחְתְּר֣וּ

Nevertheless the men

הָאֲנָשִׁ֗ים

to bring

לְהָשִׁ֛יב

 

אֶל

it to the land

הַיַּבָּשָׁ֖ה

 

וְלֹ֣א

but they could

יָכֹ֑לוּ

 

כִּ֣י

not for the sea

הַיָּ֔ם

wrought

הוֹלֵ֥ךְ

and was tempestuous

וְסֹעֵ֖ר

 

עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃

Wherefore they cried

וַיִּקְרְא֨וּ

 

אֶל

O LORD

יְהוָ֔ה

and said

וַיֹּאמְר֗וּ

We beseech thee

אָנָּ֤ה

O LORD

יְהוָ֔ה

 

אַל

 

נָ֣א

we beseech thee let us not perish

נֹאבְדָ֗ה

life

בְּנֶ֙פֶשׁ֙

for this man's

הָאִ֣ישׁ

 

הַזֶּ֔ה

 

וְאַל

and lay

תִּתֵּ֥ן

 

עָלֵ֖ינוּ

blood

דָּ֣ם

not upon us innocent

נָקִ֑יא

 

כִּֽי

 

אַתָּ֣ה

O LORD

יְהוָ֔ה

 

כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר

as it pleased

חָפַ֖צְתָּ

hast done

עָשִֽׂיתָ׃

So they took up

וַיִּשְׂאוּ֙

 

אֶת

Jonah

יוֹנָ֔ה

and cast him forth

וַיְטִלֻ֖הוּ

 

אֶל

and the sea

הַיָּ֖ם

ceased

וַיַּעֲמֹ֥ד

and the sea

הַיָּ֖ם

from her raging

מִזַּעְפּֽוֹ׃

feared

וַיִּֽירְא֧וּ

 

הָאֲנָשִׁ֛ים

 

יִרְאָ֥ה

exceedingly

גְדוֹלָ֖ה

 

אֶת

the LORD

לַֽיהוָ֔ה

and offered

וַיִּֽזְבְּחוּ

a sacrifice

זֶ֙בַח֙

the LORD

לַֽיהוָ֔ה

and made

וַֽיִּדְּר֖וּ

vows

נְדָרִֽים׃

had prepared

וַיְמַ֤ן

Now the LORD

יְהוָה֙

fish

הַדָּ֔ג

a great

גָּד֔וֹל

to swallow up

לִבְלֹ֖עַ

 

אֶת

And Jonah

יוֹנָה֙

 

וַיְהִ֤י

And Jonah

יוֹנָה֙

was in the belly

בִּמְעֵ֣י

fish

הַדָּ֔ג

and three

וּשְׁלֹשָׁ֥ה

days

יָמִ֖ים

and three

וּשְׁלֹשָׁ֥ה

nights

לֵילֽוֹת׃
