of Samaria

שֹֽׁמְר֔וֹן

And he spake

וַיֹּ֕אמֶר

 

מָ֛ה

Jews

הַיְּהוּדִ֥ים

these feeble

הָאֲמֵֽלָלִ֖ים

What do

עֹשִׂ֑ים

will they fortify

הֲיַֽעַזְב֨וּ

 

לָהֶ֤ם

themselves will they sacrifice

הֲיִזְבָּ֙חוּ֙

will they make an end

הַיְכַלּ֣וּ

in a day

בַיּ֔וֹם

will they revive

הַיְחַיּ֧וּ

 

אֶת

the stones

הָֽאֲבָנִ֛ים

out of the heaps

מֵֽעֲרֵמ֥וֹת

of the rubbish

הֶֽעָפָ֖ר

 

וְהֵ֥מָּה

which are burned

שְׂרוּפֽוֹת׃

Now Tobiah

וְטֽוֹבִיָּ֥ה

the Ammonite

הָֽעַמֹּנִ֖י

was by him

אֶצְל֑וֹ

and he said

וַיֹּ֗אמֶר

 

גַּ֚ם

 

אֲשֶׁר

 

הֵ֣ם

Even that which they build

בּוֹנִ֔ים

 

אִם

go up

יַֽעֲלֶ֣ה

if a fox

שׁוּעָ֔ל

he shall even break down

וּפָרַ֖ץ

wall

חוֹמַ֥ת

their stone

אַבְנֵיהֶֽם׃

Hear

שְׁמַ֤ע

O our God

אֱלֹהֵ֙ינוּ֙

 

כִּֽי

 

הָיִ֣ינוּ

for we are despised

בוּזָ֔ה

and turn

וְהָשֵׁ֥ב

their reproach

חֶרְפָּתָ֖ם

 

אֶל

upon their own head

רֹאשָׁ֑ם

and give

וּתְנֵ֥ם

them for a prey

לְבִזָּ֖ה

in the land

בְּאֶ֥רֶץ

of captivity

שִׁבְיָֽה׃

 

וְאַל

And cover

תְּכַס֙

 

עַל

not their iniquity

עֲוֹנָ֔ם

and let not their sin

וְחַטָּאתָ֖ם

from before

מִלְּפָנֶ֣יךָ

 

אַל

be blotted out

תִּמָּחֶ֑ה

 

כִּ֥י

thee for they have provoked thee to anger

הִכְעִ֖יסוּ

 

לְנֶ֥גֶד

before the builders

הַבּוֹנִֽים׃

So built

וַנִּבְנֶה֙

 

אֶת

and all the wall

הַֽחוֹמָ֖ה

was joined together

וַתִּקָּשֵׁ֥ר

 

כָּל

and all the wall

הַֽחוֹמָ֖ה

 

עַד

unto the half

חֶצְיָ֑הּ

 

וַיְהִ֧י

had a mind

לֵ֦ב

thereof for the people

לָעָ֖ם

to work

לַֽעֲשֽׂוֹת׃

 

וַיְהִ֣י

 

כַֽאֲשֶׁ֣ר

heard

שָׁמַ֣ע

But it came to pass that when Sanballat

סַנְבַלַּ֡ט

and Tobiah

וְ֠טֽוֹבִיָּה

and the Arabians

וְהָֽעַרְבִ֨ים

and the Ammonites

וְהָֽעַמֹּנִ֜ים

and the Ashdodites

וְהָֽאַשְׁדּוֹדִ֗ים

 

כִּֽי

 

עָלְתָ֤ה

were made up

אֲרוּכָה֙

that the walls

לְחֹמ֣וֹת

of Jerusalem

יְרֽוּשָׁלִַ֔ם

 

כִּֽי

began

הֵחֵ֥לּוּ

and that the breaches

הַפְּרֻצִ֖ים

to be stopped

לְהִסָּתֵ֑ם

wroth

וַיִּ֥חַר

 

לָהֶ֖ם

then they were very

מְאֹֽד׃

And conspired

וַיִּקְשְׁר֤וּ

 

כֻלָּם֙

all of them together

יַחְדָּ֔ו

to come

לָב֖וֹא

and to fight

לְהִלָּחֵ֣ם

against Jerusalem

בִּירֽוּשָׁלִָ֑ם

and to hinder

וְלַֽעֲשׂ֥וֹת

 

ל֖וֹ

 

תּוֹעָֽה׃

Nevertheless we made our prayer

וַנִּתְפַּלֵּ֖ל

 

אֶל

unto our God

אֱלֹהֵ֑ינוּ

and set

וַנַּֽעֲמִ֨יד

a watch

מִשְׁמָ֧ר

 

עֲלֵיהֶ֛ם

against them day

יוֹמָ֥ם

and night

וָלַ֖יְלָה

because

מִפְּנֵיהֶֽם׃

said

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר

And Judah

יְהוּדָ֗ה

is decayed

כָּשַׁל֙

The strength

כֹּ֣חַ

of the bearers of burdens

הַסַּבָּ֔ל

rubbish

וְהֶֽעָפָ֖ר

and there is much

הַרְבֵּ֑ה

 

וַֽאֲנַ֙חְנוּ֙

 

לֹ֣א

so that we are not able

נוּכַ֔ל

to build

לִבְנ֖וֹת

the wall

בַּֽחוֹמָֽה׃

said

וַיֹּֽאמְר֣וּ

And our adversaries

צָרֵ֗ינוּ

 

לֹ֤א

They shall not know

יֵֽדְעוּ֙

 

וְלֹ֣א

neither see

יִרְא֔וּ

 

עַ֛ד

 

אֲשֶׁר

till we come

נָב֥וֹא

 

אֶל

among

תּוֹכָ֖ם

them and slay

וַֽהֲרַגְנ֑וּם

to cease

וְהִשְׁבַּ֖תְנוּ

 

אֶת

them and cause the work

הַמְּלָאכָֽה׃

 

וַֽיְהִי֙

 

כַּֽאֲשֶׁר

came

בָּ֣אוּ

And it came to pass that when the Jews

הַיְּהוּדִ֔ים

which dwelt

הַיֹּֽשְׁבִ֖ים

by them

אֶצְלָ֑ם

they said

וַיֹּ֤אמְרוּ

 

לָ֙נוּ֙

unto us ten

עֶ֣שֶׂר

times

פְּעָמִ֔ים

 

מִכָּל

From all places

הַמְּקֹמ֖וֹת

 

אֲשֶׁר

whence ye shall return

תָּשׁ֥וּבוּ

 

עָלֵֽינוּ׃

I even set

וָֽאַעֲמִ֤יד

I in the lower

מִֽתַּחְתִּיּ֧וֹת

places

לַמָּק֛וֹם

behind

מֵאַֽחֲרֵ֥י

the wall

לַֽחוֹמָ֖ה

and on the higher places

בַּצְּחִחִ֑יים

I even set

וָֽאַעֲמִ֤יד

 

אֶת

the people

הָעָם֙

after their families

לְמִשְׁפָּח֔וֹת

 

עִם

with their swords

חַרְבֹֽתֵיהֶ֛ם

their spears

רָמְחֵיהֶ֖ם

and their bows

וְקַשְּׁתֹֽתֵיהֶֽם׃

And I looked

וָאֵ֣רֶא

and rose up

וָֽאָק֗וּם

and said

וָֽאֹמַ֞ר

 

אֶל

unto the nobles

הַֽחֹרִ֤ים

 

וְאֶל

and to the rulers

הַסְּגָנִים֙

 

וְאֶל

and to the rest

יֶ֣תֶר

of the people

הָעָ֔ם

 

אַל

Be not ye afraid

וְהַנּוֹרָא֙

of them

מִפְּנֵיהֶ֑ם

 

אֶת

the Lord

אֲדֹנָ֞י

which is great

הַגָּד֤וֹל

Be not ye afraid

וְהַנּוֹרָא֙

remember

זְכֹ֔רוּ

and fight

וְהִֽלָּחֲמ֗וּ

 

עַל

for your brethren

אֲחֵיכֶם֙

your sons

בְּנֵיכֶ֣ם

and your daughters

וּבְנֹֽתֵיכֶ֔ם

your wives

נְשֵׁיכֶ֖ם

and your houses

וּבָֽתֵּיכֶֽם׃

 

וַיְהִ֞י

 

כַּֽאֲשֶׁר

heard

שָׁמְע֤וּ

And it came to pass when our enemies

אֽוֹיְבֵ֙ינוּ֙

 

כִּי

that it was known

נ֣וֹדַֽע

 

לָ֔נוּ

had brought

וַיָּ֥פֶר

unto us and God

הָֽאֱלֹהִ֖ים

 

אֶת

their counsel

עֲצָתָ֑ם

that we returned

וַנָּ֤שָׁוב

 

כֻּלָּ֙נוּ֙

 

אֶל

all of us to the wall

הַ֣חוֹמָ֔ה

every one

אִ֖ישׁ

 

אֶל

unto his work

מְלַאכְתּֽוֹ׃

 

וַיְהִ֣י׀

 

מִן

And it came to pass from that time

הַיּ֣וֹם

 

הַה֗וּא

and the other half

וְחֶצְיָ֗ם

of my servants

נְעָרַי֮

wrought

עֹשִׂ֣ים

in the work

בַּמְּלָאכָה֒

and the other half

וְחֶצְיָ֗ם

of them held

מַֽחֲזִיקִים֙

both the spears

וְהָֽרְמָחִ֣ים

the shields

הַמָּֽגִנִּ֔ים

and the bows

וְהַקְּשָׁת֖וֹת

and the habergeons

וְהַשִּׁרְיֹנִ֑ים

and the rulers

וְהַ֨שָּׂרִ֔ים

were behind

אַֽחֲרֵ֖י

 

כָּל

all the house

בֵּ֥ית

of Judah

יְהוּדָֽה׃

They which builded

הַבּוֹנִ֧ים

on the wall

בַּֽחוֹמָ֛ה

and they that bare

וְהַנֹּֽשְׂאִ֥ים

burdens

בַּסֶּ֖בֶל

with those that laded

עֹֽמְשִׂ֑ים

and with the other

וְאַחַ֖ת

of his hands

יָדוֹ֙

wrought

עֹשֶׂ֣ה

in the work

בַמְּלָאכָ֔ה

and with the other

וְאַחַ֖ת

hand held

מַֽחֲזֶ֥קֶת

a weapon

הַשָּֽׁלַח׃

For the builders

וּבוֹנִ֑ים

every one

אִ֥ישׁ

had his sword

חַרְבּ֛וֹ

girded

אֲסוּרִ֥ים

 

עַל

by his side

מָתְנָ֖יו

For the builders

וּבוֹנִ֑ים

And he that sounded

וְהַתּוֹקֵ֥עַ

the trumpet

בַּשּׁוֹפָ֖ר

was by me

אֶצְלִֽי׃

And I said

וָֽאֹמַ֞ר

 

אֶל

unto the nobles

הַֽחֹרִ֤ים

 

וְאֶל

and to the rulers

הַסְּגָנִים֙

 

וְאֶל

and to the rest

יֶ֣תֶר

of the people

הָעָ֔ם

The work

הַמְּלָאכָ֥ה

is great

הַרְבֵּ֖ה

and large

וּרְחָבָ֑ה

 

וַֽאֲנַ֗חְנוּ

and we are separated

נִפְרָדִים֙

 

עַל

upon the wall

הַ֣חוֹמָ֔ה

far from

רְחוֹקִ֖ים

one

אִ֥ישׁ

another

מֵֽאָחִֽיו׃

In what place

בִּמְק֗וֹם

 

אֲשֶׁ֤ר

therefore ye hear

תִּשְׁמְעוּ֙

 

אֶת

the sound

ק֣וֹל

of the trumpet

הַשּׁוֹפָ֔ר

 

שָׁ֖מָּה

resort

תִּקָּֽבְצ֣וּ

 

אֵלֵ֑ינוּ

ye thither unto us our God

אֱלֹהֵ֖ינוּ

shall fight

יִלָּ֥חֶם

 

לָֽנוּ׃

 

וַֽאֲנַ֖חְנוּ

So we laboured

עֹשִׂ֣ים

in the work

בַּמְּלָאכָ֑ה

and half

וְחֶצְיָ֗ם

of them held

מַֽחֲזִיקִים֙

the spears

בָּֽרְמָחִ֔ים

from the rising

מֵֽעֲל֣וֹת

of the morning

הַשַּׁ֔חַר

 

עַ֖ד

appeared

צֵ֥את

till the stars

הַכּֽוֹכָבִֽים׃

 

גַּ֣ם

Likewise at the same time

בָּעֵ֤ת

 

הַהִיא֙

said

אָמַ֣רְתִּי

I unto the people

לָעָ֔ם

Let every one

אִ֣ישׁ

with his servant

וְנַֽעֲר֔וֹ

lodge

יָלִ֖ינוּ

within

בְּת֣וֹךְ

Jerusalem

יְרֽוּשָׁלִָ֑ם

 

וְהָֽיוּ

 

לָ֧נוּ

that in the night

הַלַּ֛יְלָה

they may be a guard

מִשְׁמָ֖ר

on the day

וְהַיּ֥וֹם

to us and labour

מְלָאכָֽה׃

 

וְאֵ֨ין

 

אֲנִ֜י

So neither I nor my brethren

וְאַחַ֣י

nor my servants

וּנְעָרַ֗י

nor the men

וְאַנְשֵׁ֤י

of the guard

הַמִּשְׁמָר֙

 

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

which followed

אַֽחֲרַ֔י

 

אֵין

me none of us

אֲנַ֥חְנוּ

put off

פֹֽשְׁטִ֖ים

our clothes

בְּגָדֵ֑ינוּ

saving that every one

אִ֖ישׁ

put them off

שִׁלְח֥וֹ

for washing

הַמָּֽיִם׃
