the Jews

הַיְּהוּדִֽים׃

For there were

וְיֵשׁ֙

 

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

that said

אֹֽמְרִ֔ים

We our sons

בָּנֵ֥ינוּ

and our daughters

וּבְנֹתֵ֖ינוּ

 

אֲנַ֣חְנוּ

are many

רַבִּ֑ים

therefore we take up

וְנִקְחָ֥ה

corn

דָגָ֖ן

for them that we may eat

וְנֹֽאכְלָ֥ה

and live

וְנִֽחְיֶֽה׃

Some also there were

וְיֵשׁ֙

 

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

that said

אֹֽמְרִ֔ים

our lands

שְׂדֹתֵ֛ינוּ

vineyards

וּכְרָמֵ֥ינוּ

and houses

וּבָתֵּ֖ינוּ

 

אֲנַ֣חְנוּ

We have mortgaged

עֹֽרְבִ֑ים

that we might buy

וְנִקְחָ֥ה

corn

דָגָ֖ן

because of the dearth

בָּֽרָעָֽב׃

There were

וְיֵשׁ֙

 

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

also that said

אֹֽמְרִ֔ים

We have borrowed

לָוִ֥ינוּ

money

כֶ֖סֶף

tribute

לְמִדַּ֣ת

for the king's

הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ

and that upon our lands

שְׂדֹתֵ֖ינוּ

and vineyards

וּכְרָמֵֽינוּ׃

 

וְעַתָּ֗ה

Yet now our flesh

בְּשָׂרֵ֔נוּ

of our brethren

אַחֵ֙ינוּ֙

Yet now our flesh

בְּשָׂרֵ֔נוּ

as their children

בָּנֵ֨ינוּ

as their children

בָּנֵ֨ינוּ

 

וְהִנֵּ֣ה

 

אֲנַ֣חְנוּ

and lo we bring into bondage

נִכְבָּשׁוֹת֙

 

אֶת

as their children

בָּנֵ֨ינוּ

 

וְאֶת

and our daughters

מִבְּנֹתֵ֤ינוּ

to be servants

לַֽעֲבָדִ֗ים

are

וְיֵ֨שׁ

and our daughters

מִבְּנֹתֵ֤ינוּ

and lo we bring into bondage

נִכְבָּשׁוֹת֙

 

וְאֵ֣ין

already neither is it in our power

לְאֵ֣ל

 

יָדֵ֔נוּ

have our lands

וּשְׂדֹתֵ֥ינוּ

and vineyards

וּכְרָמֵ֖ינוּ

to redeem them for other men

לַֽאֲחֵרִֽים׃

angry

וַיִּ֥חַר

 

לִ֖י

And I was very

מְאֹ֑ד

 

כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֤ר

when I heard

שָׁמַ֙עְתִּי֙

 

אֶת

their cry

זַֽעֲקָתָ֔ם

 

וְאֵ֖ת

and these words

הַדְּבָרִ֥ים

 

הָאֵֽלֶּה׃

Then I consulted

וַיִּמָּלֵ֨ךְ

with myself

לִבִּ֜י

 

עָלַ֗י

and I rebuked

וָֽאָרִ֙יבָה֙

 

אֶת

the nobles

הַֽחֹרִ֣ים

 

וְאֶת

and the rulers

הַסְּגָנִ֔ים

and said

וָאֹֽמְרָ֣ה

 

לָהֶ֔ם

usury

מַשָּׁ֥א

every one

אִישׁ

of his brother

בְּאָחִ֖יו

 

אַתֶּ֣ם

 

נֹשִׁ֑אים

And I set

וָֽאֶתֵּ֥ן

 

עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם

assembly

קְהִלָּ֥ה

a great

גְדוֹלָֽה׃

And I said

וָאֹֽמְרָ֣ה

 

לָהֶ֗ם

 

אֲנַ֣חְנוּ

have redeemed

קָ֠נִינוּ

 

אֶת

our brethren

אֲחֵיכֶ֖ם

the Jews

הַיְּהוּדִ֜ים

and will ye even sell

וְנִמְכְּרוּ

unto the heathen

לַגּוֹיִם֙

unto them We after our ability

כְּדֵ֣י

 

בָ֔נוּ

 

וְגַם

 

אַתֶּ֛ם

and will ye even sell

וְנִמְכְּרוּ

 

אֶת

our brethren

אֲחֵיכֶ֖ם

and will ye even sell

וְנִמְכְּרוּ

 

לָ֑נוּ

unto us Then held they their peace

וַֽיַּחֲרִ֔ישׁוּ

 

וְלֹ֥א

and found

מָֽצְא֖וּ

 

דָּבָֽר׃

Also I said

וָיאֹמַ֕ר

 

לֹא

It is not good

ט֥וֹב

that

הַדָּבָ֖ר

 

אֲשֶׁר

 

אַתֶּ֣ם

ye do

עֹשִׂ֑ים

 

הֲל֞וֹא

in the fear

בְּיִרְאַ֤ת

of our God

אֱלֹהֵ֙ינוּ֙

 

תֵּלֵ֔כוּ

because of the reproach

מֵֽחֶרְפַּ֖ת

of the heathen

הַגּוֹיִ֥ם

our enemies

אֽוֹיְבֵֽינוּ׃

 

וְגַם

 

אֲנִי֙

I likewise and my brethren

אַחַ֣י

and my servants

וּנְעָרַ֔י

might exact

נֹשִׁ֥ים

 

בָּהֶ֖ם

of them money

כֶּ֣סֶף

and corn

וְדָגָ֑ן

I pray you let us leave off

נַֽעַזְבָה

 

נָּ֖א

 

אֶת

this usury

הַמַּשָּׁ֥א

 

הַזֶּֽה׃

Restore

הָשִׁיבוּ֩

 

נָ֨א

 

לָהֶ֜ם

I pray you to them even this day

כְּהַיּ֗וֹם

their lands

שְׂדֹֽתֵיהֶ֛ם

their vineyards

כַּרְמֵיהֶ֥ם

their oliveyards

זֵֽיתֵיהֶ֖ם

and their houses

וּבָֽתֵּיהֶ֑ם

also the hundredth

וּמְאַ֨ת

part of the money

הַכֶּ֤סֶף

and of the corn

וְהַדָּגָן֙

the wine

הַתִּיר֣וֹשׁ

and the oil

וְהַיִּצְהָ֔ר

 

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

 

אַתֶּ֖ם

that ye exact

נֹשִׁ֥ים

 

בָּהֶֽם׃

Then said

אוֹמֵ֑ר

they We will restore

נָשִׁ֗יב

 

וּמֵהֶם֙

 

לֹ֣א

them and will require

נְבַקֵּ֔שׁ

 

כֵּ֣ן

nothing of them so will we do

לַֽעֲשׂ֖וֹת

 

כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֖ר

 

אַתָּ֣ה

Then said

אוֹמֵ֑ר

Then I called

וָֽאֶקְרָא֙

 

אֶת

the priests

הַכֹּ֣הֲנִ֔ים

and took an oath

וָֽאַשְׁבִּיעֵ֔ם

nothing of them so will we do

לַֽעֲשׂ֖וֹת

according to this promise

כַּדָּבָ֥ר

 

הַזֶּֽה׃

 

גַּם

my lap

חָצְנִ֣י

Also I shook

נָע֖וּר

and said

וַיֹּֽאמְר֨וּ

 

כָּ֣כָה

Also I shook

נָע֖וּר

So God

הָֽאֱלֹהִ֟ים

 

אֶת

 

כָּל

every man

הָאִישׁ֩

 

אֲשֶׁ֨ר

 

לֹֽא

that performeth

יָקִ֜ים

 

אֶת

according to this promise

כַּדָּבָ֥ר

 

הַזֶּ֗ה

from his house

מִבֵּיתוֹ֙

and from his labour

וּמִ֣יגִיע֔וֹ

 

וְכָ֛כָה

 

יִֽהְיֶ֥ה

Also I shook

נָע֖וּר

and emptied

וָרֵ֑ק

and said

וַיֹּֽאמְר֨וּ

 

כָֽל

And all the congregation

הַקָּהָ֜ל

Amen

אָמֵ֗ן

and praised

וַֽיְהַלְלוּ֙

 

אֶת

the LORD

יְהוָ֔ה

did

וַיַּ֥עַשׂ

And the people

הָעָ֖ם

according to this promise

כַּדָּבָ֥ר

 

הַזֶּֽה׃

 

גַּ֞ם

Moreover from the time

מִיּ֣וֹם׀

 

אֲשֶׁר

that I was appointed

צִוָּ֣ה

 

אֹתִ֗י

 

לִֽהְי֣וֹת

of the governor

הַפֶּ֖חָה

in the land

בְּאֶ֣רֶץ

of Judah

יְהוּדָה֒

year

שָׁנִ֖ים

from the twentieth

עֶשְׂרִ֗ים

 

וְ֠עַד

year

שָׁנִ֖ים

and thirtieth

שְׁלֹשִׁ֤ים

even unto the two

שְׁתֵּ֣ים

of Artaxerxes

לְאַרְתַּחְשַׁ֣סְתְּא

the king

הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ

year

שָׁנִ֖ים

even unto the two

שְׁתֵּ֣ים

 

עֶשְׂרֵ֑ה

 

אֲנִ֣י

I and my brethren

וְאַחַ֔י

the bread

לֶ֥חֶם

of the governor

הַפֶּ֖חָה

 

לֹ֥א

have not eaten

אָכַֽלְתִּי׃

governors

וְהַפַּחוֹת֩

But the former

הָרִֽאשֹׁנִ֨ים

 

אֲשֶׁר

not I because

מִפְּנֵ֖י

me were chargeable

הִכְבִּ֣ידוּ

 

עַל

over the people

הָעָ֑ם

and had taken

וַיִּקְח֨וּ

 

מֵהֶ֜ם

of them bread

בְּלֶ֤חֶם

and wine

וָיַ֙יִן֙

beside

אַחַר֙

of silver

כֶּֽסֶף

shekels

שְׁקָלִ֣ים

forty

אַרְבָּעִ֔ים

yea even

גַּ֥ם

their servants

נַֽעֲרֵיהֶ֖ם

bare rule

שָֽׁלְט֣וּ

 

עַל

over the people

הָעָ֑ם

 

וַֽאֲנִי֙

 

לֹֽא

but so did

עָשִׂ֣יתִי

 

כֵ֔ן

not I because

מִפְּנֵ֖י

of the fear

יִרְאַ֥ת

of God

אֱלֹהִֽים׃

 

וְ֠גַם

in the work

הַמְּלָאכָֽה׃

of this wall

הַֽחוֹמָ֤ה

 

הַזֹּאת֙

Yea also I continued

הֶֽחֱזַ֔קְתִּי

we any land

וְשָׂדֶ֖ה

 

לֹ֣א

neither bought

קָנִ֑ינוּ

 

וְכָל

and all my servants

נְעָרַ֔י

were gathered

קְבוּצִ֥ים

 

שָׁ֖ם

 

עַל

in the work

הַמְּלָאכָֽה׃

of the Jews

וְהַיְּהוּדִ֨ים

and rulers

וְהַסְּגָנִ֜ים

an hundred

מֵאָ֧ה

and fifty

וַֽחֲמִשִּׁ֣ים

 

אִ֗ישׁ

beside those that came

וְהַבָּאִ֥ים

 

אֵלֵ֛ינוּ

 

מִן

unto us from among the heathen

הַגּוֹיִ֥ם

 

אֲשֶׁר

that are about us

סְבִֽיבֹתֵ֖ינוּ

 

עַל

Moreover there were at my table

שֻׁלְחָנִֽי׃

 

וַֽאֲשֶׁר֩

 

הָיָ֨ה

Now that which was prepared

נַֽעֲשׂוּ

days

יָמִ֛ים

was one

אֶחָ֞ד

ox

שׁ֣וֹר

was one

אֶחָ֞ד

sheep

צֹ֠אן

and six

שֵׁשׁ

choice

בְּרֻר֤וֹת

also fowls

וְצִפֳּרִים֙

Now that which was prepared

נַֽעֲשׂוּ

 

לִ֔י

 

וּבֵ֨ין

for me and once in ten

עֲשֶׂ֧רֶת

days

יָמִ֛ים

 

בְּכָל

of all sorts of wine

יַ֖יִן

store

לְהַרְבֵּ֑ה

yet for all

וְעִם

 

זֶ֗ה

not I the bread

לֶ֤חֶם

of the governor

הַפֶּחָה֙

 

לֹ֣א

this required

בִקַּ֔שְׁתִּי

 

כִּֽי

was heavy

כָֽבְדָ֥ה

because the bondage

הָֽעֲבֹדָ֖ה

 

עַל

upon this people

הָעָ֥ם

 

הַזֶּֽה׃

Think

זָכְרָה

 

לִּ֥י

upon me my God

אֱלֹהַ֖י

for good

לְטוֹבָ֑ה

 

כֹּ֥ל

 

אֲשֶׁר

according to all that I have done

עָשִׂ֖יתִי

 

עַל

for this people

הָעָ֥ם

 

הַזֶּֽה׃
