on the side

who took
וַיִּֽקַּֽח

to him a concubine
אִשָּׁ֣ה
 
פִילֶ֔גֶשׁ
 
מִבֵּ֥ית
out of Bethlehemjudah
לֶ֖חֶם
 
יְהוּדָֽה׃

played the whore
וַתִּזְנֶ֤ה
 
עָלָיו֙
And his concubine
פִּֽילַגְשׁ֔וֹ
 
וַתֵּ֤לֶךְ
 
מֵֽאִתּוֹ֙
 
אֶל
house
בֵּ֣ית
from him unto her father's
אָבִ֔יהָ
 
אֶל
 
בֵּ֥ית
to Bethlehemjudah
לֶ֖חֶם
 
יְהוּדָ֑ה
 
וַתְּהִי
 
שָׁ֕ם
whole
יָמִ֖ים
and was there four
אַרְבָּעָ֥ה
months
חֳדָשִֽׁים׃

וַיָּ֨קָם
And her husband
אִישָׁ֜הּ
 
וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ
after
אַֽחֲרֶ֗יהָ
her to speak
לְדַבֵּ֤ר
 
עַל
friendly
לִבָּהּ֙
unto her and to bring her again
לַֽהֲשִׁיבָ֔וֹ
having his servant
וְנַֽעֲר֥וֹ
 
עִמּ֖וֹ
with him and a couple
וְצֶ֣מֶד
of asses
חֲמֹרִ֑ים
and she brought
וַתְּבִיאֵ֙הוּ֙
house
בֵּ֣ית
and when the father
אֲבִ֣י
saw
וַיִּרְאֵ֙הוּ֙
and when the father
אֲבִ֣י
of the damsel
הַֽנַּעֲרָ֔ה
him he rejoiced
וַיִּשְׂמַ֖ח
to meet
לִקְרָאתֽוֹ׃

וַיַּֽחֲזֶק

And his father in law
חֹֽתְנוֹ֙

the damsel's
הַֽנַּעֲרָ֔ה
him and he abode
וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב
 
אִתּ֖וֹ
with him three
שְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת
days
יָמִ֑ים
so they did eat
וַיֹּֽאכְלוּ֙
and drink
וַיִּשְׁתּ֔וּ
and lodged
וַיָּלִ֖ינוּ
 
שָֽׁם׃

And it came to pass on the fourth
הָֽרְבִיעִ֔י
when they arose early
וַיַּשְׁכִּ֥ימוּ
in the morning
בַבֹּ֖קֶר
that he rose up
וַיָּ֣קָם
 
לָלֶ֑כֶת
said
וַיֹּאמֶר֩
father
אֲבִ֨י
and the damsel's
הַֽנַּעֲרָ֜ה
 
אֶל
unto his son in law
חֲתָנ֗וֹ
Comfort
סְעָ֧ד
thine heart
לִבְּךָ֛
with a morsel
פַּת
of bread
לֶ֖חֶם
and afterward
וְאַחַ֥ר
 
תֵּלֵֽכוּ׃

And they sat down
וַיֵּֽשְׁב֗וּ
and did eat
וַיֹּֽאכְל֧וּ
both
שְׁנֵיהֶ֛ם
of them together
יַחְדָּ֖ו
and drink
וַיִּשְׁתּ֑וּ
had said
וַיֹּ֜אמֶר
father
אֲבִ֤י
for the damsel's
הַֽנַּעֲרָה֙
 
אֶל
unto the man
הָאִ֔ישׁ
Be content
הֽוֹאֶל
 
נָ֥א
I pray thee and tarry all night
וְלִ֖ין
be merry
וְיִטַ֥ב
and let thine heart
לִבֶּֽךָ׃

וַיָּ֥קָם
And when the man
הָאִ֖ישׁ
 
לָלֶ֑כֶת
urged
וַיִּפְצַר
 
בּוֹ֙
his father in law
חֹֽתְנ֔וֹ
there again
וַיָּ֖שָׁב
him therefore he lodged
וַיָּ֥לֶן
 
שָֽׁם׃

And he arose early
וַיַּשְׁכֵּ֨ם
in the morning
בַּבֹּ֜קֶר
day
הַיּ֑וֹם
on the fifth
הַֽחֲמִישִׁי֮
 
לָלֶכֶת֒
said
וַיֹּ֣אמֶר׀
father
אֲבִ֣י
and the damsel's
הַֽנַּעֲרָ֗ה
Comfort
סְעָד
 
נָא֙
thine heart
לְבָ֣בְךָ֔
I pray thee And they tarried
וְהִֽתְמַהְמְה֖וּ
 
עַד
until afternoon
נְט֣וֹת
day
הַיּ֑וֹם
and they did eat
וַיֹּֽאכְל֖וּ
both
שְׁנֵיהֶֽם׃

וַיָּ֤קָם
And when the man
הָאִישׁ֙
that thou mayest go
וְהָֽלַכְתָּ֖

he and his concubine
וּפִֽילַגְשׁ֖וֹ
and his servant
וְנַֽעֲר֑וֹ
said
וַיֹּ֣אמֶר

his father in law

Jebus
יְב֔וּס
 
הִ֖יא
which is Jerusalem
יְרֽוּשָׁלִָ֑ם
 
וְעִמּ֗וֹ
and there were with him two
צֶ֤מֶד
asses
חֲמוֹרִים֙
saddled
חֲבוּשִׁ֔ים
his concubine
וּפִֽילַגְשׁ֖וֹ
 
עִמּֽוֹ׃

And when they were by Jebus
יְב֔וּס
the day
וְהַיּ֖וֹם
spent
רַ֣ד
was far
מְאֹ֑ד
said
וַיֹּ֨אמֶר
and the servant
הַנַּ֜עַר
 
אֶל
unto his master
אֲדֹנָ֗יו
 
לְכָה
 
נָּ֛א
I pray thee and let us turn in
וְנָס֛וּרָה
 
אֶל
into this city
עִֽיר
of the Jebusites
הַיְבוּסִ֥י
 
הַזֹּ֖את
and lodge
וְנָלִ֥ין
 
בָּֽהּ׃

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר
 
אֵלָיו֙
And his master
אֲדֹנָ֔יו
 
לֹ֤א
unto him We will not turn aside
נָסוּר֙
 
אֶל
hither into the city
עִ֣יר
of a stranger
נָכְרִ֔י
 
אֲשֶׁ֛ר
 
לֹֽא
that is not of the children
מִבְּנֵ֥י
of Israel
יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל
 
הֵ֑נָּה
we will pass over
וְעָבַ֖רְנוּ
 
עַד
to Gibeah
גִּבְעָֽה׃

And he said
וַיֹּ֣אמֶר
unto his servant
לְנַֽעֲר֔וֹ
 
לְךָ֥
and let us draw near
וְנִקְרְבָ֖ה
to one
בְּאַחַ֣ד
of these places
הַמְּקֹמ֑וֹת
to lodge all night
וְלַ֥נּוּ
in Gibeah
בַגִּבְעָ֖ה
 
א֥וֹ
or in Ramah
בָֽרָמָֽה׃

And they passed on
וַיַּֽעַבְר֖וּ
 
וַיֵּלֵ֑כוּ
went down
וַתָּבֹ֤א
 
לָהֶם֙
and the sun
הַשֶּׁ֔מֶשׁ
upon them when they were by
אֵ֥צֶל
Gibeah
הַגִּבְעָ֖ה
 
אֲשֶׁ֥ר
which belongeth to Benjamin
לְבִנְיָמִֽן׃

And they turned aside
וַיָּסֻ֣רוּ
 
שָׁ֔ם
and when he went in
וַיָּבֹ֗א
and to lodge
לָלֽוּן׃
in Gibeah
בַּגִּבְעָ֑ה
and when he went in
וַיָּבֹ֗א
he sat him down
וַיֵּ֙שֶׁב֙
in a street
בִּרְח֣וֹב
of the city
הָעִ֔יר
 
וְאֵ֥ין
for there was no man
אִ֛ישׁ
that took
מְאַסֵּֽף
 
אוֹתָ֥ם
them into his house
הַבַּ֖יְתָה
and to lodge
לָלֽוּן׃

וְהִנֵּ֣ה׀
man
וְאַנְשֵׁ֥י
an old
זָקֵ֗ן
And behold there came
בָּ֣א
 
מִֽן
from his work
מַעֲשֵׂ֤הוּ
 
מִן
out of the field
הַשָּׂדֶה֙
at even
בָּעֶ֔רֶב
man
וְאַנְשֵׁ֥י
of mount
מֵהַ֣ר
Ephraim
אֶפְרַ֔יִם
 
וְהוּא
and he sojourned
גָ֖ר
in Gibeah
בַּגִּבְעָ֑ה
man
וְאַנְשֵׁ֥י
of the place
הַמָּק֖וֹם
 
בְּנֵ֥י
were Benjamites
יְמִינִֽי׃

And when he had lifted up
וַיִּשָּׂ֣א
his eyes
עֵינָ֗יו
he saw
וַיַּ֛רְא
 
אֶת
man
הָאִ֧ישׁ
a wayfaring
הָֽאֹרֵ֖חַ
in the street
בִּרְחֹ֣ב
of the city
הָעִ֑יר
said
וַיֹּ֨אמֶר
man
הָאִ֧ישׁ
and the old
הַזָּקֵ֛ן
 
אָ֥נָה
 
תֵלֵ֖ךְ
thou and whence
וּמֵאַ֥יִן
comest
תָּבֽוֹא׃

And he said
וַיֹּ֣אמֶר
 
אֵלָ֗יו
unto him We are passing
עֹֽבְרִ֨ים
 
אֲנַ֜חְנוּ
 
מִבֵּֽית
from Bethlehemjudah
לֶ֖חֶם
 
יְהוּדָה֮
 
עַד
toward the side
יַרְכְּתֵ֣י
of mount
הַר
Ephraim
אֶפְרַיִם֒
 
מִשָּׁ֣ם
 
אָנֹ֔כִי
but I am now going
הֹלֵ֔ךְ
 
עַד
 
בֵּ֥ית
from Bethlehemjudah
לֶ֖חֶם
 
יְהוּדָ֑ה
 
וְאֶת
me to house
הַבָּֽיְתָה׃
of the LORD
יְהוָה֙
 
אֲנִ֣י
but I am now going
הֹלֵ֔ךְ
 
וְאֵ֣ין
and there is no man
אִ֔ישׁ
that receiveth
מְאַסֵּ֥ף
 
אוֹתִ֖י
me to house
הַבָּֽיְתָה׃

וְגַם
both straw
תֶּ֤בֶן

and provender
מִסְפּוֹא֙
Yet there is
יֶשׁ
for our asses
לַֽחֲמוֹרֵ֔ינוּ
 
וְ֠גַם
and there is bread
לֶ֣חֶם
and wine
וָיַ֤יִן
Yet there is
יֶשׁ
 
לִי֙
also for me and for thy handmaid
וְלַֽאֲמָתֶ֔ךָ
and for the young man
וְלַנַּ֖עַר
 
עִם
which is with thy servants
עֲבָדֶ֑יךָ
 
אֵ֥ין
there is no want
מַחְס֖וֹר
 
כָּל
of any thing
דָּבָֽר׃

said
וַיֹּ֨אמֶר
man
הָאִ֤ישׁ
And the old
הַזָּקֵן֙
Peace
שָׁל֣וֹם
 
לָ֔ךְ
be with thee howsoever
רַ֥ק
 
כָּל
let all thy wants
מַחְסֽוֹרְךָ֖
 
עָלָ֑י
be with thee howsoever
רַ֥ק
not in the street
בָּֽרְח֖וֹב
 
אַל
lie upon me only lodge
תָּלַֽן׃

So he brought
וַיְבִיאֵ֣הוּ
him into his house
לְבֵית֔וֹ
and gave provender
וַיָּ֖בָוֹל
unto the asses
לַֽחֲמוֹרִ֑ים
and they washed
וַֽיִּרְחֲצוּ֙
their feet
רַגְלֵיהֶ֔ם
and did eat
וַיֹּֽאכְל֖וּ
and drink
וַיִּשְׁתּֽוּ׃

מֵֽיטִיבִ֣ים
 
אֶת
Now as they were making their hearts
לִבָּם֒
 
וְהִנֵּה֩
behold the men
אַנְשֵׁ֣י
of the city
הָעִ֜יר
behold the men
אַנְשֵׁ֣י
sons
בְנֵֽי
of Belial
בְלִיַּ֗עַל
beset
נָסַ֙בּוּ֙
 
אֶת
into thine house
בֵּֽיתְךָ֖
and beat
מִֽתְדַּפְּקִ֖ים
 
עַל
at the door
הַדָּ֑לֶת
and spake
לֵאמֹ֔ר
 
אֶל
man
הָאִ֛ישׁ
to the master
בַּ֣עַל
into thine house
בֵּֽיתְךָ֖
the old
הַזָּקֵן֙
and spake
לֵאמֹ֔ר
Bring forth
הוֹצֵ֗א
 
אֶת
man
הָאִ֛ישׁ
 
אֲשֶׁר
that came
בָּ֥א
 
אֶל
into thine house
בֵּֽיתְךָ֖
that we may know
וְנֵֽדָעֶֽנּוּ׃

And the man
הָאִ֤ישׁ
the master

into mine house
בֵּיתִ֔י
unto them and said
וַיֹּ֣אמֶר
 
אֲלֵהֶ֔ם
unto them Nay
אַֽל
my brethren
אַחַ֖י
unto them Nay
אַֽל
nay I pray you do not so wickedly
תָּרֵ֣עוּ
 
נָ֑א
seeing
אַֽ֠חֲרֵי
 
אֲשֶׁר
is come
בָּ֞א
And the man
הָאִ֤ישׁ
 
הַזֶּה֙
 
אַל
into mine house
בֵּיתִ֔י
unto them Nay
אַֽל
do
תַּעֲשׂ֖וּ
 
אֶת
not this folly
הַנְּבָלָ֥ה
 
הַזֹּֽאת׃

הִנֵּה֩
Behold here is my daughter
בִתִּ֨י
a maiden
הַבְּתוּלָ֜ה
and his concubine
וּפִֽילַגְשֵׁ֗הוּ
them I will bring out
אוֹצִֽיאָה
 
נָּ֤א
 
אוֹתָם֙
now and humble
וְעַנּ֣וּ
 
אוֹתָ֔ם
do
תַֽעֲשׂ֔וּ
 
לָהֶ֔ם
good
הַטּ֖וֹב
with them what seemeth
בְּעֵֽינֵיכֶ֑ם
unto you but unto this man
וְלָאִ֤ישׁ

תַֽעֲשׂ֔וּ
a thing

But the men
הָֽאֲנָשִׁים֙
not hearken
לִשְׁמֹ֣עַֽ
 
ל֔וֹ
took
וַיַּֽחֲזֵ֤ק
to him so the man
הָאִישׁ֙
his concubine
בְּפִ֣ילַגְשׁ֔וֹ
and brought
וַיֹּצֵ֥א
 
אֲלֵיהֶ֖ם
her forth
הַח֑וּץ
unto them and they knew
וַיֵּֽדְע֣וּ
 
א֠וֹתָהּ
her and abused
וַיִּֽתְעַלְּלוּ
 
בָ֤הּ
 
כָּל
her all the night
הַלַּ֙יְלָה֙
 
עַד
until the morning
הַבֹּ֔קֶר
they let her go
וַֽיְשַׁלְּח֖וּהָ
began to spring
בַּֽעֲל֥וֹת
and when the day
הַשָּֽׁחַר׃

Then came
וַתָּבֹ֥א
the woman
הָֽאִשָּׁ֖ה
in the dawning
לִפְנ֣וֹת
of the day
הַבֹּ֑קֶר
and fell down
וַתִּפֹּ֞ל
at the door
פֶּ֧תַח
house
בֵּית
of the man's
הָאִ֛ישׁ
 
אֲשֶׁר
where her lord
אֲדוֹנֶ֥יהָ
 
שָּׁ֖ם
 
עַד
was till it was light
הָאֽוֹר׃

rose up
וַיָּ֨קָם
And her lord
אֲדֹנֶ֜יהָ
in the morning
בַּבֹּ֗קֶר
and opened
וַיִּפְתַּח֙
the doors
דַּלְת֣וֹת
of the house
הַבַּ֔יִת
and went out
וַיֵּצֵ֖א
 
לָלֶ֣כֶת
his way
לְדַרְכּ֑וֹ
 
וְהִנֵּ֧ה
and behold the woman
הָֽאִשָּׁ֣ה
his concubine
פִֽילַגְשׁ֗וֹ
was fallen down
נֹפֶ֙לֶת֙
at the door
פֶּ֣תַח
of the house
הַבַּ֔יִת
and her hands
וְיָדֶ֖יהָ
 
עַל
were upon the threshold
הַסַּֽף׃

And he said
וַיֹּ֧אמֶר
 
אֵלֶ֛יהָ
rose up
וַיָּ֣קָם
 
וְנֵלֵ֖כָה
 
וְאֵ֣ין
But none answered
עֹנֶ֑ה
took
וַיִּקָּחֶ֙הָ֙
 
עַֽל
her up upon an ass
הַחֲמ֔וֹר
rose up
וַיָּ֣קָם
Then the man
הָאִ֔ישׁ
 
וַיֵּ֖לֶךְ
him unto his place
לִמְקֹמֽוֹ׃
29
And when he was come
וַיָּבֹ֣א
 
אֶל
into his house
בֵּית֗וֹ
he took
וַיִּקַּ֤ח
 
אֶת
a knife
הַֽמַּאֲכֶ֙לֶת֙
and laid hold
וַיַּֽחֲזֵ֣ק
on his concubine
בְּפִֽילַגְשׁ֔וֹ
and divided
וַֽיְנַתְּחֶ֙הָ֙
her together with her bones
לַֽעֲצָמֶ֔יהָ
into twelve
לִשְׁנֵ֥ים
 
עָשָׂ֖ר
pieces
נְתָחִ֑ים
and sent
וַֽיְשַׁלְּחֶ֔הָ
 
בְּכֹ֖ל
her into all the coasts
גְּב֥וּל
of Israel
יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

And it was so
נִהְיְתָ֤ה
 
כָל
done nor seen
נִרְאֲתָה֙
it said
וְאָמַר֙
 
לֹֽא
And it was so
נִהְיְתָ֤ה
 
וְלֹֽא
done nor seen
נִרְאֲתָה֙
There was no such deed
כָּזֹ֔את
from the day
הַיּ֣וֹם
came up
עֲל֤וֹת
that the children
בְּנֵֽי
of Israel
יִשְׂרָאֵל֙
out of the land
מֵאֶ֣רֶץ
of Egypt
מִצְרַ֔יִם
 
עַ֖ד
from the day
הַיּ֣וֹם
 
הַזֶּ֑ה
consider
שִֽׂימוּ
 
לָכֶ֥ם
 
עָלֶ֖יהָ
of it take advice
עֻ֥צוּ
and speak
וְדַבֵּֽרוּ׃
