And Samuel

it he will kill

וַֽהֲרָגָ֑נִי

and say

וְאָ֣מַרְתָּ֔

עֶגְלַ֤ת

an heifer

בָּקָר֙

Take

תִּקַּ֣ח

with thee

בְּיָדֶ֔ךָ

and say

וְאָ֣מַרְתָּ֔

to sacrifice

לִזְבֹּ֥חַ

me And the LORD

לַֽיהוָ֖ה

I am come

בָּֽאתִי׃

And call

וְקָרָ֥אתָ

Jesse

לְיִשַׁ֖י

to the sacrifice

בַּזָּ֑בַח

 

וְאָֽנֹכִ֗י

and I will shew

אוֹדִֽיעֲךָ֙

 

אֵ֣ת

 

אֲשֶֽׁר

thee what thou shalt do

תַּעֲשֶׂ֔ה

and thou shalt anoint

וּמָֽשַׁחְתָּ֣

 

לִ֔י

 

אֵ֥ת

 

אֲשֶׁר

unto me him whom I name

אֹמַ֖ר

 

אֵלֶֽיךָ׃

וַיַּ֣עַשׂ

of the town

הָעִיר֙

 

לִקְרָאת֔וֹ

and said

וַיֹּ֖אמֶר

thou peaceably

שָׁלֹ֥ם

Comest

בּוֹאֶֽךָ׃

And he said

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר׀

Peaceably

שָׁל֗וֹם

to sacrifice

לִזְבֹּ֤חַ

unto the LORD

לַֽיהוָה֙

I am come

וּבָאתֶ֥ם

And he sanctified

וַיְקַדֵּ֤שׁ

I am come

וּבָאתֶ֥ם

 

אִתִּ֖י

them to the sacrifice

לַזָּֽבַח׃

And he sanctified

וַיְקַדֵּ֤שׁ

Jesse

יִשַׁי֙

and his sons

בָּנָ֔יו

and called

וַיִּקְרָ֥א

 

לָהֶ֖ם

them to the sacrifice

לַזָּֽבַח׃

 

וַיְהִ֣י

And it came to pass when they were come

בְּבוֹאָ֔ם

that he looked

וַיַּ֖רְא

on Eliab

אֱלִיאָ֑ב

and said

וַיֹּ֕אמֶר

 

אַ֛ךְ

 

נֶ֥גֶד

Surely the LORD'S

יְהוָ֖ה

anointed

מְשִׁיחֽוֹ׃

said

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר

But the LORD

וַֽיהוָ֖ה

unto Samuel

שְׁמוּאֵ֗ל

Look

תַּבֵּ֧ט

 

אֶל

not on his countenance

מַרְאֵ֛הוּ

 

וְאֶל

or on the height

גְּבֹ֥הַּ

of his stature

קֽוֹמָת֖וֹ

 

כִּ֣י

because I have refused

מְאַסְתִּ֑יהוּ

 

כִּ֣י׀

 

לֹ֗א

 

אֲשֶׁ֤ר

looketh

יִרְאֶ֥ה

for man

הָֽאָדָם֙

 

כִּ֤י

on the outward appearance

לַעֵינַ֔יִם

But the LORD

וַֽיהוָ֖ה

אֲבִ֣ינָדָ֔ב

and made him pass

וַיַּֽעֲבִרֵ֖הוּ

And he said

וַיֹּ֕אמֶר

בָּזֶ֖ה

 

לֹֽא

Neither hath the LORD

יְהוָֽה׃

to pass by

וַיַּֽעֲבֵ֥ר

Then Jesse

יִשַׁ֖י

made Shammah

שַׁמָּ֑ה

And he said

וַיֹּ֕אמֶר

 

גַּם

 

בָּזֶ֖ה

 

לֹֽא

chosen

בָחַ֥ר

Neither hath the LORD

יְהוָֽה׃

to pass

וַיַּֽעֲבֵ֥ר

Again Jesse

יִשַׁ֔י

made seven

שִׁבְעַ֥ת

of his sons

בָּנָ֖יו

before

לִפְנֵ֣י

And Samuel

שְׁמוּאֵל֙

said

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר

And Samuel

Again Jesse

יִשַׁ֔י

 

לֹֽא

hath not chosen

בָחַ֥ר

The LORD

יְהוָ֖ה

 

בָּאֵֽלֶּה׃

And he said

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר

And Samuel

שְׁמוּאֵ֤ל

 

אֶל

unto Jesse

יִשַׁי֙

Are here all

הֲתַ֣מּוּ

thy children

הַנְּעָרִים֒

And he said

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר

 

ע֚וֹד

There remaineth

שָׁאַ֣ר

yet the youngest

הַקָּטָ֔ן

 

וְהִנֵּ֥ה

and behold he keepeth

רֹעֶ֖ה

the sheep

בַּצֹּ֑אן

And he said

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר

And Samuel

שְׁמוּאֵ֤ל

 

אֶל

unto Jesse

יִשַׁי֙

Send

שִׁלְחָ֣ה

and fetch

וְקָחֶ֔נּוּ

 

כִּ֥י

 

לֹֽא

him for we will not sit down

נָסֹ֖ב

 

עַד

till he come

בֹּא֥וֹ

hither

פֹֽה׃

And he sent

וַיִּשְׁלַ֤ח

and brought him in

וַיְבִיאֵ֙הוּ֙

 

וְה֣וּא

Now he was ruddy

אַדְמוֹנִ֔י

and withal

עִם

of a beautiful

יְפֵ֥ה

countenance

עֵינַ֖יִם

and goodly

וְט֣וֹב

to look to

רֹ֑אִי

said

וַיֹּ֧אמֶר

And the LORD

יְהוָ֛ה

Arise

anoint

מְשָׁחֵ֖הוּ

וַיִּקַּ֨ח

So Samuel

שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל

 

אֶת

the horn

קֶ֣רֶן

of oil

הַשֶּׁ֗מֶן

and anointed

וַיִּמְשַׁ֣ח

 

אֹתוֹ֮

him in the midst

בְּקֶ֣רֶב

of his brethren

אֶחָיו֒

וַתִּצְלַ֤ח

and the Spirit

רֽוּחַ

of the LORD

יְהוָה֙

 

אֶל

upon David

דָּוִ֔ד

from that day

מֵֽהַיּ֥וֹם

 

הַה֖וּא

forward

וָמָ֑עְלָה

rose up

וַיָּ֣קָם

So Samuel

שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל

 

וַיֵּ֖לֶךְ

to Ramah

הָֽרָמָֽתָה׃

But the Spirit

רֽוּחַ

from the LORD

יְהוָֽה׃

departed

סָ֖רָה

 

מֵעִ֣ם

from Saul

שָׁא֑וּל

troubled

וּבִֽעֲתַ֥תּוּ

But the Spirit

רֽוּחַ

and an evil

רָעָ֖ה

 

מֵאֵ֥ת

from the LORD

יְהוָֽה׃

said

וַיֹּֽאמְר֥וּ

servants

עַבְדֵֽי

And Saul's

שָׁא֖וּל

 

אֵלָ֑יו

 

הִנֵּה

 

נָ֧א

spirit

רֽוּחַ

from God

אֱלֹהִ֛ים

unto him Behold now an evil

רָעָ֖ה

troubleth

מְבַֽעִתֶּֽךָ׃

now command

יֹֽאמַר

 

נָ֤א

Let our lord

אֲדֹנֵ֙נוּ֙

thy servants

עֲבָדֶ֣יךָ

which are before

לְפָנֶ֔יךָ

thee to seek out

יְבַקְשׁ֕וּ

a man

אִ֕ישׁ

who is a cunning

יֹדֵ֖עַ

is upon thee that he shall play

וְנִגֵּ֥ן

on an harp

בַּכִּנּ֑וֹר

 

וְהָיָ֗ה

 

בִּֽהְי֨וֹת

 

עָלֶ֤יךָ

אֱלֹהִים֙

and it shall come to pass when the evil

רָעָ֔ה

is upon thee that he shall play

מֵיטִ֣יב

that can play

לְנַגֵּ֔ן

and bring

וַהֲבִֽיאוֹתֶ֖ם

 

אֵלָֽי׃

Then answered

וַיַּעַן֩

one

אֶחָ֨ד

of the servants

מֵֽהַנְּעָרִ֜ים

and said

וַיֹּ֗אמֶר

 

הִנֵּ֨ה

Behold I have seen

רָאִ֜יתִי

a son

בֵּ֣ן

of Jesse

לְיִשַׁי֮

 

בֵּ֣ית

the Bethlehemite

הַלַּחְמִי֒

that is cunning

יֹדֵ֣עַ

in playing

נַ֠גֵּן

and a mighty

וְגִבּ֨וֹר

valiant man

חַ֜יִל

and a man

וְאִ֣ישׁ

of war

מִלְחָמָ֛ה

and prudent

וּנְב֥וֹן

in matters

דָּבָ֖ר

and a man

וְאִ֣ישׁ

and a comely

תֹּ֑אַר

and the LORD

וַֽיהוָ֖ה

 

עִמּֽוֹ׃

Wherefore Saul

שָׁא֛וּל

מַלְאָכִ֖ים

unto Jesse

יִשָׁ֑י

and said

וַיֹּ֕אמֶר

אֵלַ֛י

me David

דָּוִ֥ד

thy son

בִּנְךָ֖

 

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

which is with the sheep

בַּצֹּֽאן׃

took

וַיִּקַּ֨ח

And Jesse

יִשַׁ֜י

an ass

חֲמ֥וֹר

laden with bread

לֶ֙חֶם֙

and a bottle

וְנֹ֣אד

of wine

יַ֔יִן

kid

וּגְדִ֥י

 

עִזִּ֖ים

and a

אֶחָ֑ד

and sent

וַיִּשְׁלַ֛ח

them by

בְּיַד

David

דָּוִ֥ד

his son

בְּנ֖וֹ

unto Saul

שָׁאֽוּל׃

וַיָּבֹ֤א

and stood

וַֽיַּעֲמֹ֖ד

לְפָנָ֑יו

him and he loved

וַיֶּֽאֱהָבֵ֣הֽוּ

him greatly

and he became his armourbearer

נֹשֵׂ֥א

לֵאמֹ֑ר

I pray thee stand

יַֽעֲמָד

Let David

דָוִד֙

לְפָנַ֔י

 

כִּֽי

me for he hath found

מָ֥צָא

favour

חֵ֖ן

in my sight

בְּעֵינָֽי׃

 

וְהָיָ֗ה

 

בִּֽהְי֤וֹת

And it came to pass when the evil spirit

ר֥וּחַ

from God

אֱלֹהִים֙

 

אֶל

so Saul

לְשָׁאוּל֙

took

וְלָקַ֥ח

that David

דָּוִ֛ד

 

אֶת

an harp

הַכִּנּ֖וֹר

and played

וְנִגֵּ֣ן

with his hand

בְּיָד֑וֹ

was refreshed

וְרָוַ֤ח

so Saul

לְשָׁאוּל֙

and was well

וְט֣וֹב

 

ל֔וֹ

departed

וְסָ֥רָה

 

מֵֽעָלָ֖יו

And it came to pass when the evil spirit

ר֥וּחַ

and the evil

הָֽרָעָֽה׃
