even the goodliest

and take it away

וְלָקָֽחוּ׃

how this man seeketh

מְבַקֵּ֑שׁ

that he said

עֲבָדָיו֙

and they were two

for war

לְמִלְחָמָ֛ה

יָצָ֖אוּ

And he said

Thy servant

עַבְדְּךָ֧

And he said

I pray thee let me live

נָ֣א

 

נַפְשִׁ֑י

And he said

הַעוֹדֶ֥נּוּ

Is he yet alive

וְהָֽאֲנָשִׁים֩

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר

יַ֚עַן

 

אֲשֶׁ֤ר

 

לֹֽא

he unto him Because thou hast not obeyed

שָׁמַ֙עְתָּ֙

the voice

בְּק֣וֹל

of the LORD

יְהוָ֔ה

 

הִנְּךָ֤

behold as soon as thou art departed

וַיֵּ֙לֶךְ֙

 

מֵֽאִתִּ֔י

him and slew

וַיַּכֵּֽהוּ׃

a lion

הָֽאַרְיֵ֖ה

behold as soon as thou art departed

וַיֵּ֙לֶךְ֙

from him

מֵֽאֶצְל֔וֹ

found

וַיִּמְצָאֵ֥הוּ

a lion

הָֽאַרְיֵ֖ה

him and slew

וַיַּכֵּֽהוּ׃

Then he found

וַיִּמְצָא֙

man

הָאִ֖ישׁ

another

אַחֵ֔ר

and said

וַיֹּ֖אמֶר

Smite

הַכֵּ֥ה

 

נָ֑א

Smite

הַכֵּ֥ה

man

הָאִ֖ישׁ

Smite

הַכֵּ֥ה

he wounded

וּפָצֹֽעַ׃

 

וַיֵּ֙לֶךְ֙

So the prophet

הַנָּבִ֔יא

and waited

וַיַּֽעֲמֹ֥ד

for the king

לַמֶּ֖לֶךְ

 

עַל

by the way

הַדָּ֑רֶךְ

and disguised

וַיִּתְחַפֵּ֥שׂ

himself with ashes

בָּֽאֲפֵ֖ר

 

עַל

upon his face

עֵינָֽיו׃

 

וַיְהִ֤י

And as the king

הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ

passed by

עֹבֵ֔ר

 

וְה֖וּא

he cried

צָעַ֣ק

 

אֶל

And as the king

הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ

and he said

וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙

Thy servant

עַבְדְּךָ֣׀

went out

יָצָ֣א

into the midst

בְקֶֽרֶב

of the battle

הַמִּלְחָמָ֗ה

 

וְהִנֵּֽה

a man

הָאִ֣ישׁ

turned aside

סָ֜ר

and brought

וַיָּבֵ֧א

 

אֵלַ֣י

a man

הָאִ֣ישׁ

and he said

וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙

Keep

שְׁמֹר֙

 

אֶת

a man

הָאִ֣ישׁ

 

הַזֶּ֔ה

 

אִם

he be missing

יִפָּקֵ֔ד

he be missing

יִפָּקֵ֔ד

 

וְהָֽיְתָ֤ה

be for his life

נַפְשׁ֔וֹ

 

תַּ֣חַת

be for his life

נַפְשׁ֔וֹ

 

א֥וֹ

a talent

כִכַּר

of silver

כֶּ֖סֶף

or else thou shalt pay

תִּשְׁקֽוֹל׃

 

וַיְהִ֣י

And as thy servant

עַבְדְּךָ֗

was busy

עֹשֵׂ֥ה

 

הֵ֛נָּה

 

וָהֵ֖נָּה

 

וְה֣וּא

here and there he was gone

אֵינֶ֑נּוּ

said

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר

 

אֵלָ֧יו

And the king

מֶֽלֶךְ

of Israel

יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל

 

כֵּ֥ן

unto him So shall thy judgment

מִשְׁפָּטֶ֖ךָ

 

אַתָּ֥ה

be thyself hast decided

חָרָֽצְתָּ׃

And he hasted

וַיְמַהֵ֕ר

away

וַיָּ֙סַר֙

 

אֶת

and took the ashes

הָ֣אֲפֵ֔ר

 

מֵעֲלֵ֖

from his face

עֵינָ֑יו

discerned

וַיַּכֵּ֤ר

 

אֹתוֹ֙

and the king

מֶ֣לֶךְ

of Israel

יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל

 

כִּ֥י

him that he was of the prophets

מֵֽהַנְּבִיאִ֖ים

 

הֽוּא׃

And he said

אָמַ֣ר

 

אֵלָ֗יו

 

כֹּ֚ה

And he said

אָמַ֣ר

the LORD

יְהוָ֔ה

 

יַ֛עַן

Because thou hast let go

שִׁלַּ֥חְתָּ

 

אֶת

a man

אִישׁ

whom I appointed to utter destruction

חֶרְמִ֖י

out of thy hand

מִיָּ֑ד

 

וְהָֽיְתָ֤ה

shall go for his life

נַפְשׁ֔וֹ

 

תַּ֣חַת

shall go for his life

נַפְשׁ֔וֹ

and thy people

עַמּֽוֹ׃

וַיֵּ֧לֶךְ

And the king

מֶֽלֶךְ

of Israel

יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל

 

עַל

to his house

בֵּית֖וֹ

heavy

סַ֣ר

and displeased

וְזָעֵ֑ף

and came

וַיָּבֹ֖א

to Samaria

שֹֽׁמְרֽוֹנָה׃
