The Spirit

me and the breath

וְנִשְׁמַ֖ת

of the Almighty

שַׁדַּ֣י

hath given me life

תְּחַיֵּֽנִי׃

 

אִם

If thou canst

תּוּכַ֥ל

answer

הֲשִׁיבֵ֑נִי

me set thy words in order

עֶרְכָ֥ה

before

לְ֝פָנַ֗י

me stand up

הִתְיַצָּֽבָה׃

 

הֵן

 

אֲנִ֣י

Behold I am according to thy wish

כְפִ֣יךָ

in God's

לָאֵ֑ל

out of the clay

מֵ֝חֹ֗מֶר

stead I also am formed

קֹרַ֥צְתִּי

 

גַם

 

אָֽנִי׃

 

הִנֵּ֣ה

Behold my terror

אֵ֭מָתִי

 

לֹ֣א

shall not make thee afraid

תְבַעֲתֶ֑ךָּ

neither shall my hand

וְ֝אַכְפִּ֗י

 

עָלֶ֥יךָ

 

לֹא

be heavy

יִכְבָּֽד׃

 

אַ֭ךְ

Surely thou hast spoken

אָמַ֣רְתָּ

in mine hearing

בְאָזְנָ֑י

the voice

וְק֖וֹל

of thy words

מִלִּ֣ין

and I have heard

אֶשְׁמָֽע׃

I am clean

זַ֥ךְ

 

אֲנִ֗י

 

בְּֽלִ֫י

without transgression

פָ֥שַׁע

I am innocent

חַ֥ף

 

אָנֹכִ֑י

 

וְלֹ֖א

neither is there iniquity

עָוֹ֣ן

 

לִֽי׃

 

הֵ֣ן

occasions

תְּ֭נוּאוֹת

 

עָלַ֣י

Behold he findeth

יִמְצָ֑א

against me he counteth

יַחְשְׁבֵ֖נִי

me for his enemy

לְאוֹיֵ֣ב

He putteth

יָשֵׂ֣ם

in the stocks

בַּסַּ֣ד

my feet

רַגְלָ֑י

he marketh

יִ֝שְׁמֹ֗ר

all my paths

Behold in this thou art not just

צָדַ֣קְתָּ

I will answer

אֶעֱנֶ֑ךָּ

is greater

יִרְבֶּ֥ה

thee that God

אֱ֝ל֗וֹהַּ

than man

מֵאֱנֽוֹשׁ׃

 

מַ֭דּוּעַ

 

אֵלָ֣יו

Why dost thou strive

רִיב֑וֹתָ

 

כִּ֥י

of any of his matters

דְּ֝בָרָ֗יו

 

לֹ֣א

against him for he giveth not account

יַעֲנֶֽה׃

 

כִּֽי

בְאַחַ֥ת

speaketh

יְדַבֶּר

For God

אֵ֑ל

yea twice

וּ֝בִשְׁתַּ֗יִם

 

לֹ֣א

yet man perceiveth

יְשׁוּרֶֽנָּה׃

In a dream

בַּחֲל֤וֹם׀

in a vision

חֶזְי֬וֹן

of the night

לַ֗יְלָה

sleep falleth

בִּנְפֹ֣ל

when deep

תַּ֭רְדֵּמָה

 

עַל

 

אֲנָשִׁ֑ים

in slumberings

בִּ֝תְנוּמ֗וֹת

 

עֲלֵ֣י

upon the bed

מִשְׁכָּֽב׃

 

אָ֣ז

Then he openeth

יִ֭גְלֶה

the ears

אֹ֣זֶן

of men

אֲנָשִׁ֑ים

their instruction

וּבְמֹ֖סָרָ֣ם

and sealeth

יַחְתֹּֽם׃

That he may withdraw

לְ֭הָסִיר

man

אָדָ֣ם

from his purpose

מַעֲשֶׂ֑ה

pride

וְגֵוָ֖ה

from man

מִגֶּ֣בֶר

and hide

יְכַסֶּֽה׃

He keepeth back

יַחְשֹׂ֣ךְ

his soul

נַ֭פְשׁוֹ

 

מִנִּי

from the pit

שָׁ֑חַת

and his life

וְ֝חַיָּת֗וֹ

from perishing

מֵעֲבֹ֥ר

by the sword

בַּשָּֽׁלַח׃

He is chastened

וְהוּכַ֣ח

also with pain

בְּ֭מַכְאוֹב

 

עַל

upon his bed

מִשְׁכָּב֑וֹ

and the multitude

וְר֖יֹב

of his bones

עֲצָמָ֣יו

with strong

אֵתָֽן׃

abhorreth

וְזִֽהֲמַ֣תּוּ

So that his life

חַיָּת֣וֹ

bread

לָ֑חֶם

and his soul

וְ֝נַפְשׁ֗וֹ

meat

מַאֲכַ֥ל

dainty

תַּאֲוָֽה׃

is consumed away

יִ֣כֶל

His flesh

בְּשָׂר֣וֹ

that it cannot be seen

מֵרֹ֑אִי

stick out

וְשֻׁפּ֥יּ

and his bones

עַ֝צְמֹתָ֗יו

 

לֹ֣א

that were not seen

רֻאּֽוּ׃

draweth near

וַתִּקְרַ֣ב

unto the grave

לַשַּׁ֣חַת

Yea his soul

נַפְשׁ֑וֹ

and his life

וְ֝חַיָּת֗וֹ

to the destroyers

לַֽמְמִתִֽים׃

 

אִם

If there

יֵ֤שׁ

 

עָלָ֨יו׀

be a messenger

מַלְאָ֗ךְ

with him an interpreter

מֵלִ֗יץ

one

אֶחָ֥ד

 

מִנִּי

among a thousand

אָ֑לֶף

to shew

לְהַגִּ֖יד

unto man

לְאָדָ֣ם

his uprightness

יָשְׁרֽוֹ׃

Then he is gracious

וַיְחֻנֶּ֗נּוּ

unto him and saith

וַיֹּ֗אמֶר

Deliver

פְּ֭דָעֵהוּ

him from going down

מֵרֶ֥דֶת

to the pit

שָׁ֗חַת

I have found

מָצָ֥אתִי

a ransom

כֹֽפֶר׃

shall be fresher

רֻֽטֲפַ֣שׁ

His flesh

בְּשָׂר֣וֹ

than a child's

מִנֹּ֑עַר

he shall return

יָ֝שׁ֗וּב

to the days

לִימֵ֥י

of his youth

עֲלוּמָֽיו׃

He shall pray

יֶעְתַּ֤ר

 

אֶל

unto God

אֱל֨וֹהַּ׀

and he will be favourable

וַיִּרְצֵ֗הוּ

unto him and he shall see

וַיַּ֣רְא

his face

פָּ֭נָיו

with joy

בִּתְרוּעָ֑ה

for he will render

וַיָּ֥שֶׁב

unto man

לֶ֝אֱנ֗וֹשׁ

his righteousness

צִדְקָתֽוֹ׃

He looketh

יָשֹׁ֤ר׀

 

עַל

upon men

אֲנָשִׁ֗ים

and if any say

וַיֹּ֗אמֶר

I have sinned

חָ֭טָאתִי

that which was right

וְיָשָׁ֥ר

and perverted

הֶעֱוֵ֗יתִי

 

וְלֹא

and it profited

שָׁ֥וָה

 

לִֽי׃

He will deliver

פָּדָ֣ה

his soul

נַ֭פְשׁיֹ

from going

מֵעֲבֹ֣ר

into the pit

בַּשָּׁ֑חַת

and his life

וְ֝חַיָּת֗יֹ

the light

בָּא֥וֹר

shall see

תִּרְאֶֽה׃

 

הֶן

 

כָּל

 

אֵ֭לֶּה

Lo all these things worketh

יִפְעַל

God

אֵ֑ל

oftentimes

פַּעֲמַ֖יִם

 

שָׁל֣וֹשׁ

 

עִם

with man

גָּֽבֶר׃

To bring back

לְהָשִׁ֣יב

his soul

נַ֭פְשׁוֹ

 

מִנִּי

from the pit

שָׁ֑חַת

to be enlightened

לֵ֝א֗וֹר

with the light

בְּא֣וֹר

of the living

הַֽחַיִּים׃

Mark well

הַקְשֵׁ֖ב

O Job

אִיּ֥וֹב

hearken

שְֽׁמַֽע

 

לִ֑י

unto me hold thy peace

הַ֝חֲרֵ֗שׁ

 

וְאָנֹכִ֥י

and I will speak

אֲדַבֵּֽר׃

 

אִם

If thou hast

יֵשׁ

any thing to say

מִלִּ֥ין

answer

הֲשִׁיבֵ֑נִי

me speak

דַּ֝בֵּ֗ר

 

כִּֽי

for I desire

חָפַ֥צְתִּי

to justify

צַדְּקֶֽךָּ׃

 

אִם

 

אַ֭יִן

 

אַתָּ֥ה

If not hearken

שְֽׁמַֽע

 

לִ֑י

unto me hold thy peace

הַ֝חֲרֵ֗שׁ

and I shall teach

וַאֲאַלֶּפְךָ֥

thee wisdom

חָכְמָֽה׃
