בְּחוּצ֣וֹת

of Jerusalem

יְרוּשָׁלִַ֗ם

מְבַקֵּ֣שׁ

in the broad places

בִרְחוֹבוֹתֶ֔יהָ

 

אִם

thereof if ye can find

תִּמְצְא֣וּ

a man

if there be

יֵ֛שׁ

any that executeth

עֹשֶׂ֥ה

judgment

מִשְׁפָּ֖ט

and seek

מְבַקֵּ֣שׁ

the truth

אֱמוּנָ֑ה

and I will pardon

וְאֶסְלַ֖ח

 

לָֽהּ׃

 

וְאִ֥ם

liveth

חַי

The LORD

יְהוָֹ֖ה

And though they say

יֹאמֵ֑רוּ

 

לָכֵ֥ן

falsely

לַשֶּׁ֖קֶר

surely they swear

יִשָּׁבֵֽעוּ׃

O LORD

יְהוָֹ֗ה

are not thine eyes

עֵינֶיךָ֮

 

הֲל֣וֹא

upon the truth

לֶאֱמוּנָה֒

thou hast stricken

הִכִּ֤יתָה

 

אֹתָם֙

 

וְֽלֹא

them but they have not grieved

חָ֔לוּ

thou hast consumed

כִּלִּיתָ֕ם

them but they have refused

מֵאֲנ֖וּ

to receive

קַ֣חַת

correction

מוּסָ֑ר

harder

חִזְּק֤וּ

they have made their faces

פְנֵיהֶם֙

than a rock

מִסֶּ֔לַע

them but they have refused

מֵאֲנ֖וּ

to return

לָשֽׁוּב׃

 

וַאֲנִ֣י

Therefore I said

אָמַ֔רְתִּי

 

אַךְ

Surely these are poor

דַּלִּ֖ים

 

הֵ֑ם

they are foolish

נוֹאֲל֕וּ

 

כִּ֣י

 

לֹ֤א

for they know

יָדְעוּ֙

not the way

דֶּ֣רֶךְ

of the LORD

יְהוָ֔ה

nor the judgment

מִשְׁפַּ֖ט

of their God

אֱלֹהֵיהֶֽם׃

 

אֵֽלֲכָה

 

לִּ֤י

 

אֶל

me unto the great men

הַגְּדֹלִים֙

and will speak

וַאֲדַבְּרָ֣ה

 

אוֹתָ֔ם

 

כִּ֣י

 

הֵ֗מָּה

unto them for they have known

יָדְעוּ֙

the way

דֶּ֣רֶךְ

of the LORD

יְהוָ֔ה

and the judgment

מִשְׁפַּ֖ט

of their God

אֱלֹהֵיהֶ֑ם

 

אַ֣ךְ

 

הֵ֤מָּה

but these have altogether

יַחְדָּו֙

broken

שָׁ֣בְרוּ

the yoke

עֹ֔ל

and burst

נִתְּק֖וּ

the bonds

מוֹסֵרֽוֹת׃

 

עַל

 

כֵּן֩

shall slay

הִכָּ֨ם

Wherefore a lion

אַרְיֵ֜ה

out of the forest

מִיַּ֗עַר

them and a wolf

זְאֵ֤ב

of the evenings

עֲרָבוֹת֙

shall spoil

יְשָׁדְדֵ֔ם

them a leopard

נָמֵ֤ר

shall watch

שֹׁקֵד֙

 

עַל

over their cities

עָ֣רֵיהֶ֔ם

 

כָּל

every one that goeth out

הַיּוֹצֵ֥א

thence shall

מֵהֵ֖נָּה

be torn in pieces

יִטָּרֵ֑ף

 

כִּ֤י

are many

רַבּוּ֙

because their transgressions

פִּשְׁעֵיהֶ֔ם

are increased

עָצְמ֖וּ

and their backslidings

מְשֻׁבוֹתֵיהֶֽם׃

How

אֵ֤י

thee for this

לָזֹאת֙

shall I pardon

לָ֔ךְ

shall I pardon

לָ֔ךְ

thy children

בָּנַ֣יִךְ

have forsaken

עֲזָב֔וּנִי

me and sworn

וָאַשְׂבִּ֤עַ

by them that are no

בְּלֹ֣א

gods

אֱלֹהִ֑ים

me and sworn

וָאַשְׂבִּ֤עַ

 

אוֹתָם֙

they then committed adultery

וַיִּנְאָ֔פוּ

' houses

וּבֵ֥ית

in the harlots

זוֹנָ֖ה

and assembled themselves by troops

יִתְגּוֹדָֽדוּ׃

horses

סוּסִ֥ים

They were as fed

מְיֻזָּנִ֖ים

in the morning

מַשְׁכִּ֣ים

 

הָי֑וּ

every one

אִ֛ישׁ

 

אֶל

wife

אֵ֥שֶׁת

after his neighbour's

רֵעֵ֖הוּ

neighed

יִצְהָֽלוּ׃

 

הַֽעַל

 

אֵ֥לֶּה

 

לוֹא

Shall I not visit

אֶפְקֹ֖ד

for these things saith

נְאֻם

the LORD

יְהוָֹ֑ה

 

וְאִם֙

on such a nation

בְּג֣וֹי

 

אֲשֶׁר

 

כָּזֶ֔ה

 

לֹ֥א

be avenged

תִתְנַקֵּ֖ם

and shall not my soul

נַפְשִֽׁי׃

Go ye up

עֲל֤וּ

upon her walls

בְשָׁרוֹתֶ֙יהָ֙

and destroy

וְשַׁחֵ֔תוּ

not a full end

וְכָלָ֖ה

 

אַֽל

but make

תַּעֲשׂ֑וּ

take away

הָסִ֙ירוּ֙

her battlements

נְטִ֣ישׁוֹתֶ֔יהָ

 

כִּ֛י

 

ל֥וֹא

for they are not the LORD'S

לַיהוָ֖ה

 

הֵֽמָּה׃

 

כִּי֩

have dealt very

בָּגְד֜וּ

have dealt very

against me saith

נְאֻם

the LORD

יְהוָֽה׃

They have belied

כִּֽחֲשׁוּ֙

the LORD

בַּיהוָ֔ה

and said

וַיֹּאמְר֖וּ

 

לוֹא

 

ה֑וּא

 

וְלֹא

come

תָב֤וֹא

 

עָלֵ֙ינוּ֙

It is not he neither shall evil

רָעָ֔ה

sword

וְחֶ֥רֶב

nor famine

וְרָעָ֖ב

 

ל֥וֹא

upon us neither shall we see

נִרְאֶֽה׃

And the prophets

וְהַנְּבִיאִים֙

 

יִֽהְי֣וּ

shall become wind

לְר֔וּחַ

 

וְהַדִּבֵּ֖ר

 

אֵ֣ין

 

בָּהֶ֑ם

 

כֹּ֥ה

is not in them thus shall it be done

יֵעָשֶׂ֖ה

 

לָהֶֽם׃

 

לָכֵ֗ן

 

כֹּֽה

Wherefore thus saith

אָמַ֤ר

the LORD

יְהוָה֙

God

אֱלֹהֵ֣י

of hosts

צְבָא֔וֹת

 

יַ֚עַן

Because ye speak

דַּבֶּרְכֶ֔ם

 

אֶת

my words

דְּבָרַ֨י

 

הַזֶּ֑ה

 

הִנְנִ֣י

behold I will make

נֹתֵן֩

my words

דְּבָרַ֨י

in thy mouth

בְּפִ֜יךָ

fire

לְאֵ֗שׁ

and this people

וְהָעָ֥ם

 

הַזֶּ֛ה

wood

עֵצִ֖ים

and it shall devour

וַאֲכָלָֽתַם׃

 

הִנְנִ֣י

Lo I will bring

מֵבִיא֩

 

עֲלֵיכֶ֨ם

a nation

גּ֚וֹי

upon you from far

מִמֶּרְחָ֛ק

O house

בֵּ֥ית

of Israel

יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל

saith

נְאֻם

the LORD

יְהוָֹ֑ה

a nation

גּ֚וֹי

it is a mighty

אֵיתָ֣ן

 

ה֗וּא

a nation

גּ֚וֹי

it is an ancient

מֵעוֹלָם֙

 

ה֔וּא

a nation

גּ֚וֹי

 

לֹא

thou knowest

תֵדַ֣ע

whose language

לְשֹׁנ֔וֹ

 

וְלֹ֥א

not neither understandest

תִשְׁמַ֖ע

 

מַה

what they say

יְדַבֵּֽר׃

Their quiver

אַשְׁפָּת֖וֹ

sepulchre

כְּקֶ֣בֶר

is as an open

פָּת֑וּחַ

 

כֻּלָּ֖ם

they are all mighty men

גִּבּוֹרִֽים׃

And they shall eat up

יֹאכַ֥ל

thine harvest

קְצִֽירְךָ֜

and thy bread

וְלַחְמֶ֗ךָ

And they shall eat up

יֹאכַ֥ל

which thy sons

בָּנֶ֣יךָ

and thy daughters

וּבְנוֹתֶ֔יךָ

And they shall eat up

יֹאכַ֥ל

thy flocks

צֹאנְךָ֙

and thine herds

וּבְקָרֶ֔ךָ

And they shall eat up

יֹאכַ֥ל

thy vines

גַּפְנְךָ֖

and thy fig trees

וּתְאֵנָתֶ֑ךָ

they shall impoverish

יְרֹשֵׁ֞שׁ

cities

עָרֵ֣י

thy fenced

מִבְצָרֶ֗יךָ

 

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

 

אַתָּ֛ה

trustedst

בֹּטֵ֥חַ

wherein thou

בָּהֵ֖נָּה

with the sword

בֶּחָֽרֶב׃

 

וְגַ֛ם

Nevertheless in those days

בַּיָּמִ֥ים

 

הָהֵ֖מָּה

saith

נְאֻם

the LORD

יְהוָֹ֑ה

 

לֹֽא

I will not make

אֶעֱשֶׂ֥ה

 

אִתְּכֶ֖ם

a full end

כָּלָֽה׃

 

וְהָיָה֙

 

כִּ֣י

And it shall come to pass when ye shall say

וְאָמַרְתָּ֣

Wherefore

תַּ֣חַת

 

מֶ֗ה

doeth

עָשָׂ֨ה

the LORD

יְהוָֹ֧ה

gods

אֱלֹהֵ֤י

 

לָ֖נוּ

 

אֶת

 

כָּל

 

אֵ֑לֶּה

And it shall come to pass when ye shall say

וְאָמַרְתָּ֣

 

אֲלֵיהֶ֗ם

 

כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר

them Like as ye have forsaken

עֲזַבְתֶּ֤ם

 

אוֹתִי֙

me and served

תַּעַבְד֣וּ

gods

אֱלֹהֵ֤י

strange

נֵכָר֙

in a land

בְּאֶ֖רֶץ

 

כֵּ֚ן

זָרִ֔ים

in a land

בְּאֶ֖רֶץ

Declare

הַגִּ֥ידוּ

 

זֹ֖את

this in the house

בְּבֵ֣ית

of Jacob

יַעֲקֹ֑ב

and publish

וְהַשְׁמִיע֥וּהָ

it in Judah

בִיהוּדָ֖ה

saying

לֵאמֹֽר׃

Hear

יִשְׁמָֽעוּ׃

 

נָ֣א

 

זֹ֔את

people

עַ֥ם

now this O foolish

סָכָ֖ל

 

וְאֵ֣ין

and without understanding

לֵ֑ב

which have eyes

עֵינַ֤יִם

 

לָהֶם֙

 

וְלֹ֣א

and see

יִרְא֔וּ

not which have ears

אָזְנַ֥יִם

 

לָהֶ֖ם

 

וְלֹ֥א

Hear

יִשְׁמָֽעוּ׃

 

הַאוֹתִ֨י

 

לֹא

Fear

תִירָ֜אוּ

ye not me saith

נְאֻם

the LORD

יְהוָֹ֗ה

 

אִ֤ם

at my presence

מִפָּנַי֙

 

לֹ֣א

will ye not tremble

תָחִ֔ילוּ

 

אֲשֶׁר

which have placed

שַׂ֤מְתִּי

the sand

חוֹל֙

for the bound

גְּב֣וּל

of the sea

לַיָּ֔ם

decree

חָק

by a perpetual

עוֹלָ֖ם

 

וְלֹ֣א

that it cannot pass

יַעַבְרֻֽנְהוּ׃

thereof toss

וַיִּֽתְגָּעֲשׁוּ֙

 

וְלֹ֣א

themselves yet can they not prevail

יוּכָ֔לוּ

though they roar

וְהָמ֥וּ

it and though the waves

גַלָּ֖יו

 

וְלֹ֥א

that it cannot pass

יַעַבְרֻֽנְהוּ׃

But this people

וְלָעָ֤ם

 

הַזֶּה֙

 

הָיָ֔ה

heart

לֵ֖ב

hath a revolting

סוֹרֵ֣ר

and a rebellious

וּמוֹרֶ֑ה

they are revolted

סָ֖רוּ

 

וַיֵּלֵֽכוּ׃

 

וְלֽוֹא

Neither say

אָמְר֣וּ

they in their heart

בִלְבָבָ֗ם

Let us now fear

נִ֤ירָא

 

נָא֙

 

אֶת

the LORD

יְהוָ֣ה

our God

אֱלֹהֵ֔ינוּ

that giveth

הַנֹּתֵ֗ן

rain

גֶּ֛שֶׁם

both the former

יוֹרֶ֥ה

and the latter

וּמַלְק֖וֹשׁ

in his season

בְּעִתּ֑וֹ

weeks

שְׁבֻעֹ֛ת

unto us the appointed

חֻקּ֥וֹת

of the harvest

קָצִ֖יר

he reserveth

יִשְׁמָר

 

לָֽנוּ׃

Your iniquities

עֲוֺנוֹתֵיכֶ֖ם

have turned away

הִטּוּ

 

אֵ֑לֶּה

these things and your sins

וְחַטֹּ֣אותֵיכֶ֔ם

have withholden

מָנְע֥וּ

good

הַטּ֖וֹב

 

מִכֶּֽם׃

 

כִּי

are found

נִמְצְא֥וּ

For among my people

בְעַמִּ֖י

wicked

רְשָׁעִ֑ים

men they lay wait

יָשׁוּר֙

as he that setteth

כְּשַׁ֣ךְ

snares

יְקוּשִׁ֔ים

they set

הִצִּ֥יבוּ

a trap

מַשְׁחִ֖ית

men

אֲנָשִׁ֥ים

they catch

יִלְכֹּֽדוּ׃

As a cage

כִּכְלוּב֙

full

מְלֵאִ֣ים

of birds

ע֔וֹף

 

כֵּ֥ן

so are their houses

בָּתֵּיהֶ֖ם

full

מְלֵאִ֣ים

of deceit

מִרְמָ֑ה

 

עַל

 

כֵּ֥ן

therefore they are become great

גָּדְל֖וּ

and waxen rich

וַֽיַּעֲשִֽׁירוּ׃

They are waxen fat

שָׁמְנ֣וּ

they shine

עָשְׁת֗וּ

 

גַּ֚ם

yea they overpass

עָֽבְר֣וּ

the deeds

דִבְרֵי

of the wicked

רָ֔ע

not the cause

דִּ֥ין

 

לֹא

they judge

דָ֔נוּ

not the cause

דִּ֥ין

the cause of the fatherless

יָת֖וֹם

yet they prosper

וְיַצְלִ֑יחוּ

and the right

וּמִשְׁפַּ֥ט

of the needy

אֶבְיוֹנִ֖ים

do they not judge

The prophets

prophesy

נִבְּא֣וּ

falsely

בַשֶּׁ֗קֶר

and the priests

וְהַכֹּהֲנִים֙

bear rule

יִרְדּ֣וּ

 

עַל

by their means

יְדֵיהֶ֔ם

and my people

וְעַמִּ֖י

love

אָ֣הֲבוּ

 

כֵ֑ן

 

וּמַֽה

to have it so and what will ye do

תַּעֲשׂ֖וּ

in the end

לְאַחֲרִיתָֽהּ׃
